Convention Update from Rosa DeLauro

by: Rosa DeLauro

Thu Aug 28, 2008 at 12:45:22 PM EDT

Picture 1I was absolutely blown away by Joe Biden last night -- as was everyone in the Pepsi Center.  I know Joe well -- I remember when Joe came to Connecticut for Chris Dodd during his first Senate race.  So I know what he is capable of.

I was thrilled that the entire country was able to really get to know Joe Biden and learn more about his poignant story.  And that started with the moving introduction by his son Beau.  There was a reason Michelle Obama was holding on to that kleenex.  It was so touching and that was because it was from the heart.  You could tell that what Beau said about his dad, he truly meant.  Joe Biden is dedicated to his family and they are dedicated to him.

And from the first few sentences of his speech, it was clear that Joe was going to knock this out of the park.  He spoke from the heart and soul about his family, his upbringing and what drives him.  All of Connecticut knows how my mom has always been a motivational force in my life.  Well, last night we saw that Joe Biden had a similar force with his mom, Catherine. So it is no surprise that Joe Biden is not afraid to take on the Bush Administration -- on national security, on foreign policy, on the economy, or anything.  We are all living with the failed policies of the Bush Administration, and as Joe rightly pointed out last night, that John McCain only offers more of the same.

People want to know that the people running to be president and vice president understand what it is like to walk in their shoes...the nature of uncertainty of their lives and that they are going to be listening.

Barack Obama and Joe Biden can look people in the eye and tell us how they are going to turn this country around. With Obama's surprise appearance last night, he continues to shake up things. I cannot wait for Obama's speech tonight.

Convention Update from Rosa DeLauro

by: Rosa DeLauro

Tue Aug 26, 2008 at 20:22:13 PM EDT

Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro is guest blogging from the Democratic Convention for My Left Nutmeg (as well as CT Local Politics). Please make sure to express your gratitude on Congresswoman DeLauro taking time to share her experiences from the convention with the MLN community --ctblogger

I want to thank you for letting me share my Democratic Convention experience with you and appreciate all of your feedback and comments.

Everywhere I turn at this convention continues to reinforce how Barack Obama and Joe Biden have the leadership to bring the change this country needs.

I just spoke with reporters about the wage gap between men and women.  I was sitting at this table with Senator Debbie Stabenow of Michigan , and Congresswoman Debbie Wasserman-Schultz, and Lily Ledbetter - a woman you are all likely familiar with as the face and voice of pay discrimination. As she sat with us, she reminds us of why we fight so hard for equal pay and why this election matters. But as you would expect, with a topic of women and the economy, we veered into a broad range of topics....the state children's health insurance program, social security, reproductive health, and taxes.

As you would expect, on each of these issues, John McCain would continue the failed policies of the Bush Administration. He is so out of touch with middle class Americans. Even in the face of Lily Ledbetter, McCain continues to say he doesn't believe in the wage gap. But what do we expect from a man who cannot keep track of how many houses he owns.

Quite contrary to Barack Obama.  When I was fighting to pass the Paycheck Fairness Act, Barack was right there - applauding the bill's passage in the U.S. House of Representatives with me.  It really is not that surprising - just look at the inspiration Barrack Obama has in his daughters and his wife, Michelle, (who was phenomenal at the Convention last night).

The Obama Pound

As someone noted on this YouTube I upped, it is funny that the traditional media feels it even has to comment on this as some kind of new phenomenon, but I suppose when the future President does it it does evoke that the times are indeed a changin'.

Michelle Obama visits Connecticut ... Barack on the way

by: CaptCT

Thu Jan 31, 2008 at 09:25:13 AM EST

Michelle Obama spent time talking to people at a diner in Stamford, CT, and then attended a fundraiser in Greenwich hosted by Ned Lamont. She made the point that we can solve many of America's problems not by blaming each other or by making us afraid of people different than us -- as Bush, Lieberman, McCain and Shays have been doing -- but by overcoming those fears that divide us and actually working together:
"This is sort of the beauty of this campaign. Whether you are wealthy person who lives in Greenwich or whether you're somebody who's living in South Central L.A., you know the hopes for the future of this country are the same," Obama said. "People want a message of more unity. People believe that we can do better if we're not operating from a place of fear but from a place of possibility."

Michelle Obama didn't spend much time discussing her husband's policies. But Barack may do that himself. Apparently, Senator Obama will be coming to Connecticut on Monday:

Obama Coming To Connecticut
Barack Obama is expected in Connecticut -- most likely Hartford -- on Monday, his campaign staff has announced. On Wednesday evening, a time or venue had not yet been arranged. Monday is the day before Connecticut voters participate in the 22-state Super Tuesday primary. Obama's opponent for the Democratic nomination, Hillary Clinton, came to the Learning Corridor in Hartford earlier this week.

UPDATE: Congressmen Murphy and Larson will endorse Obama:

Connecticut Congressmen John Larson and Chris Murphy threw their support to Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama on Thursday ahead of his planned visit to the state next week. [...]

The two plan to formally announce their endorsements at a Saturday rally. Obama's campaign said he will visit the state Monday, the day before Connecticut and 21 other states hold their Super Tuesday primaries.

Gabe at CTLP looks at how this endorsement may affect the battle for CT delegates.

Michelle Obama: Be Not Afraid

by: Scarce

Fri Aug 17, 2007 at 09:42:17 AM EDT

Michelle Obama introduces her husband, Illinois Sen. Barack Obama, at a campaign stop in western Iowa.

Perhaps the best speech by a presidential candidate this year.
