Jane over at Firedoglake posted this video a couple of days ago in reference to a video Rep. Alan Grayson (D-FL) posted earlier this year, asking where the money was going. Even last week a Federal Reserve Inspector General couldn't --or wouldn't-- say.
As Jane wrote:
One of the things we discussed was the refusal of Fed Vice Chair Donald Kohn to answer Alan Grayson's question in a House Financial Services hearing when the Florida Representative asked him to name the banks that the Fed was lending to. Bloomberg estimates that the US government and the Fed have now lent, spent or committed $12.8 trillion dollars in financial rescue, up 73% from November, when they estimated the amount to be $7.4 trillion.
Jane over at Firedoglake sends this video of her, Markos Moulitsas (DailyKos) and Ned Lamont givnig their respective takes on the Lieberman situation.
Old Home Week -- Ned Lamont stopped by the Big Tent. He, Markos and I chatted about the fact that Joe Lieberman hasn't changed, he's still the same backstabbing asshole he always was but at least he doesn't get to call himself a Democrat since we KICKED HIM OUT OF THE PARTY.
But sorry as we may be to mark Buckley's passing, we should be very glad that the country ignored much of what he had to say. Consider, for example, this National Review editorial from 1957 (cited in Paul Krugman's recent book The Conscience of a Liberal):
The central question that emerges -- and it is not a parliamentary question or a question that is answered by merely consulting a catalog of the rights of American citizens, born Equal -- is whether the White community in the South is entitled to take such measures as are necessary to prevail, politically and culturally, in areas in which it does not predominate numerically? The sobering answer is Yes -- the White community is so entitled because, for the time being, it is the advanced race. ...
Jane Hamsher of Firedoglake.com on C-Span's Washington Journal this morning. There weren't too many calls such as this but the few there were were handled deftly. While not endorsing any democratic candidate Jane did give props to Chris Dodd for his leadership on FISA and telecom immunity. The entire hour can be found at the C-Span site or at YouTube (Part 1 of 7).
Firedoglake, Jane Hamsher's blog, is getting overwhelming praise today, both from within the blogosphere and the traditional media for their work on the Scooter Libby trial and for the years leading up to today. Glenn Greenwald had this to say last month:
It is virtually impossible to closely follow the Libby trial without relying upon the work of the blogging team assembled by Jane Hamsher and FireDogLake. Hamsher built FDL by becoming (along with her blogging partner, former prosecutor Christy Hardin Smith) literally one of the country's leading experts on the Plame scandal, long providing some of the most insightful analysis, and even breaking stories, on her blog.
While Jeff Jarvis at Buzz Machine noted the new dynamic. As did James Gordon Meeks (NY Daily News) on C-Span in the first clip I upped for Jane. The second clip is from today on Fox News where James Boyce (Democratic Strategist and Huffington Post contributor) squares off with Rich Lowery (The National Review) in typical Fox News fashion.
Marcy Wheeler's report from the trial today is the third clip. Anyone wanting a comprehensive look into this case ought to read her Anatomy of Deceit.
As you may know, Jane Hamsher recently unerwent surgery for a recurrence of breast cancer. Today there's good news.
First off, I'm happy to report that I'm doing really well, surgery was very successful and I'm recovering very quickly thanks to all the people who have stepped up to help and all of the good wishes and prayers that came my way in the past week. It's hard to know where to begin the list of thank-yous. Much love to Digby and Tom Swan who got me to the hospital and held my hand waiting for surgery (they claim I was cussing Dick Cheney as I was going under but I have no recollection of it), then sat an 8 hour vigil til I came out and were there in the ICU when I woke up. It was a loooong day that only a true friend would devote and I cannot thank them both enough.
Our thoughts and our prayers are with fellow blogger Jane Hamsher.
In mid-December I was diagnosed with breast cancer for the third time. It's a bit more serious this time and treatment is going to have to be more extensive. I owe a huge debt of thanks to all the folks on the blog who have stepped in and allowed me time to investigate treatment options with many physicians and make an informed decision on that front. In addition to regulars like Christy, Pach and TRex who have taken over many of my duties, I also need to express my thanks to commenters like Scarecrow, Looseheadprop, Peterr, Hugh and Oilfieldguy who have done incredible work posting so that I could take this time off. Guest posters like Taylor Marsh, Swopa, Steve Gilliard, Watertiger, Howie Klein and others have also pitched in, and no amount of words can thank the incredible RGB, our site administrator, who has taken it upon himself to coordinate all these disparate elements on the fly. It's been a daunting task and he has managed it spectacularly.
On Thursday I go in for surgery at St. John's Hospital in Santa Monica. My surgeons are Dr. Armando Giuliano, with whom I've been down this road before, and Dr. Jay Orringer, who comes highly recommended by both friends and his own superb work. Thanks to the time that all of those who contribute to this blog have afforded me to investigate all my options, I feel really confident in my choice of treatments. Right now I'm writing from John Amato's house, the Crooks & Liars bat cave, where I'll be recouping. The emotional support that bloggers like John, Digby, Arianna, and of course Pach, TRex and the amazing Christy have given to me during this time - well, there just are no words to express.
