Christopher Shays

In classic Shays strategy he links to Democrat in today's Post headline

by: Patriotact

Mon Mar 24, 2008 at 23:26:29 PM EDT

( - promoted by ctblogger)

Today's Connecticut Post lead headline story links Shays and Finch in (sic) an effort to rejuvenate the Arts in Bridgeport.

Shays strategy of linking himself to a current Democratic office holder is his not so subtle way to reinforce his very dubious assertion that he is a moderate Republican.

Today's feature story (which I was unable to find online) is doubly ironical because neither Shays nor Finch have shown any support for Bridgeport's extremely anemic and nearly invisible arts community any time in memory.

( Here's the link. Jon K.)

The story announces an arts forum this coming Friday (28) at Housatonic Community college which is being run by Rell loyalist (and art gallery director) Robin Zella.  The forum is meant to anoint a sham arts inventory report authored by a MA consultant whose only interest was in collecting the $12,000 fee and give the appearance that he was advancing the arts in Bridgeport.

Economic Stimulus and Chris Shays

by: mcnicastre

Sun Jan 27, 2008 at 14:19:17 PM EST

Last week, Chris Shays released statement promoting his support for a sense of the Congress resolution that bravely took the stand that the United States has an obligation to help those in poverty.

Most of the times sense of the Congress votes come and go with little opportunity for members to take a strong stand. But with the economic stimulus plan in the works, Shays has a perfect opportunity to put his money (or his donor's money) where his mouth is and stand up for a stimulus plan that provides food stamps and full unemployment insurance. The current stimulus plan stripped these provisions, and given Shays' newfound commitment to fighting poverty, now is the perfect time for him to step up and fight for two of the most effective ways to not only fight poverty, but to also provide quick and effective stimulus.

CT-04: Jim Himes' Impressive Fundraising

by: spazeboy

Mon Jul 09, 2007 at 19:27:13 PM EDT

The imaginary Christopher Shays bobblehead that intermittently whispers in my ear just said "Holy shit!"

It turns out that Jim Himes, the Democrat challenging Shays for the 4th Congressional District seat in 2008 raised $352,000 in the second quarter.

Peter Urban broke the news at the CT Post:

The early total is a record for a challenger in the 4th Congressional District and will likely clear the way for Himes to capture the Democratic nomination next summer without a primary. State Rep. Jim Shapiro, D-Stamford, announced last week that he would not run for the seat that Shays has held since 1987.

"I'm not willing to say it shuts out anybody but it is a good sign of momentum," Himes said Monday in a telephone interview.

Another good sign of momentum is this number: 610

The Himes for Congress website signed up 610 founding members before the end of the last quarter. You can still show your support by clicking here to contribute, and here to volunteer.

Joe Lieberman Smacked Hard

by: Missy's Brother

Mon May 07, 2007 at 17:05:10 PM EDT

This is from Hugh Bailey, an assistant editorial page editor at The Connecticut Post:

http://www.connpost....

'Civility' not a valid reason to avoid duties as elected official

Sen. Joe Lieberman set it up as a vote between him and the terrorists. And he had the nerve to host a seminar on "civility" last week in Washington.

"The disease is partisanship," he said. "The lack of civility is one of the symptoms of that disease."

It may be hard to understand for someone who thinks of himself as above all that, but politics is partisanship. People align themselves with different parties because they have different beliefs, and different ideas. Not everyone agrees on the best way to, say, fund education or conduct foreign policy - or prevent terrorism. What kind of a political world are we looking for with no partisanship?

Maybe he wants the kind we had for most of the past six years. With one party running the legislative and executive branches, there was no oversight, no accountability, and now we're stuck in the middle of a war - we can't stay and we can't leave. Maybe more partisanship could have avoided all this.

Lieberman leads the Senate committee on government affairs, but apparently avoiding the "partisan politics of polarization," as he calls it, is a good excuse not to do his job. Campaigning last year, he said he would make sure the Bush administration turned over records on internal White House deliberations - likely to embarrass the president - from the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. After the election, he changed his mind.

"We don't want to play 'gotcha' anymore," Lieberman said in January when word came out he was backing off his pre-election promise. "We want to get the aid and assistance to the people of the region who need it," as though the two were mutually exclusive.

The leader of the House version of Lieberman's committee is Rep. Henry Waxman of California. Armed with subpoena power, Waxman has already delved into the Pentagon propaganda operation, which fictionalized the stories of Jessica Lynch and Pat Tillman; he's investigating the parallel e-mail system that may have allowed White House political staff to avoid laws on preserving communications; and he wants answers from the top about the lies leading up to the Iraq invasion. There is no chance of seeing similar investigations in the Senate committee - Lieberman knows which voters got him back into office last year, and they weren't Democrats. But he can take credit for one achievement. He succeeded in getting Republicans and Democrats to alternate seats with one another around the dais when they meet in committee, rather than splitting up on one side or the other. All the better for civility.

If the self-appointed arbiter of all things bipartisan is going to turn his back on doing the job he was elected to do, he can at least make sure everyone is nice to each other.

And Bailey does not go after just Lieberman but Shays as well. Was this any of you?

U.S. Rep. Christopher Shays, whose rage over the campaign run against him last year by Democrat Diane Farrell has not abated (and he did, after all, win), has faced some unhappy constituents in his recent state tour.

Also the THOUGHT FOR THE DAY in the Hartford Courant immediately reminded me of LIEberman.
