Loony Lee Rallies the Party, Schmoozes With Shays

by: mikect

Lee Whitnum and her intrepid tin foil hat team of five volunteers have been scouring the fourth district in recent days, scrambling to gather signatures to petition her way onto a Congressional primary ballot.  But she hasn't exactly been endearing herself to Democrats, telling a reporter that other than the little war thing, "I don't have a problem with Chris Shays" and "I kind of like Chris Shays."

Now, coming down to the June 10th deadline for petition signatures, she's getting anxious, sending e-mails to Democratic Town Committee chairs.  (And how could they refuse?)

Democratic Chairs:  Please forward the following message to all the Democrats on your town committee and any other Democrats that you know.

Being a small d democrat, I'm glad to help spread the word.  Lee has not always been clear on her own identity, but she knows who public enemy #1 is - Jim "Nazi" Himes.  That much she has in common with Chris Shays, and perhaps that's why they're so chummy on the campaign trail.

Speaking of Chris Shays, I saw him in Trumbull and he asked, "Lee, how is your petition drive going?" He was well-aware of who I was and what I was doing. I told him "okay" and he actually wished me luck.

Now sharing fuzzy stories about Shays might not be the most effective way to motivate Democratic activists.   But Lee is not about partisan expediency, sucking up to Democratic activists or talking to delegates (though an occasional answering machine is a good place for her to vent).  While she claims she's tantalizingly close to her signature requirements, she's run into a snag and is pulling out all the stops to recover lost ground.

Unfortunately, our campaign had a major blow yesterday. We learned that the petitions collected from one man could not be used because, although he is a registered Democrat, he had converted from Republican within the last three months. We didn't know. We lost a huge chunk and I am heartbroken. We had our initial 2459 and we were working on margin of error but now we are set back. We are so close but there is only five days remaining. We need your help.

A Republican volunteer ... praising the Republican incumbent.... it's hard to know if, say, certain Republicans are supporting her campaign, because she's not much into boring, wonky stuff like filing FEC reports on time, following the legally required schedule, or itemizing her donations and expenses, like any other candidate is required to do frequently.

But don't let partisan polarizers and bitter, copyright-violating,  morally compromised and highly-compensated bloggers get in the way of getting a fine candidate on the ballot.  Those are the people who kept her from getting the convention nod in the first place, says Lee.

I knew that if I couldn't speak to the delegates all they'd have to go by were the lies of my Democratic opponent's paid bloggers and I would never get the 15% needed.

As a side note, to add insult to injury, apparently Himes' fascist sympathizers are breaking into her Web site, tweaking the wording on one particular page, and scurrying away into the night.  Cut that out!  And take your alien probe devices with you.  Here's a Whitnum's Web blurb on this latest affront.

Note:  Hackers keep breaking into this page and deleting paragraphs. Please stop.

And here's the e-mail from Shays Whitnum.  Do what you can.

Subj: Urgent need for Democrats

Democratic Chairs:  Please forward the following message to all the Democrats on your town committee and any other Democrats that you know.

Dear Democrats,

I have been standing out in the rain and hot sun for 21 days straight to put my name on the ballot. Sometimes I'm out there from sun up to midnight. Although it has been physically demanding, I've been quite optimistic because I felt I was a foot soldier fighting to restore Democracy to this district. And now, because of a recent development, I am crestfallen. I am writing to request your help. I am requesting that a few of you collect some signatures. The petitions are due on Tuesday, June 10th we are running out of time.

Many people have wanted to know who is this blond woman wearing a baseball cap and shouting for "registered Democrats to sign my petition" Hundreds of people have talked with me. It is amazing how many Democrats are not tuned-in but one human contact and now they are. Many good Democrats who haven't been interested in decades are now interested. They want choice. We haven't had a democratic primary in this district in over 50 years. I believe this is the reason why we've had Chris Shays for 27 years. Although we've had good candidates, people really aren't paying attention. Primaries generate interest.

Speaking of Chris Shays, I saw him in Trumbull and he asked, "Lee, how is your petition drive going?" He was well-aware of who I was and what I was doing. I told him "okay" and he actually wished me luck. COME ON DEMOCRATS  COME OUT AND HELP  many people are watching.

The history: I have been a congressional candidate for ten months. As many of you know I boycotted the delegate's convention because I was told that I was going to be shut out and not allowed to speak. I had a motioner but I was told one hour before the convention that my motion to address the delegates was going to be voted down by my opponent's people. I felt very conspired against  I knew that if I couldn't speak to the delegates all they'd have to go by were the lies of my Democratic opponent's paid bloggers and I would never get the 15% needed. I felt this was such a breach of democracy that we didn't even attend. We pulled off the road and I bought dinner for my crew. We boycotted the convention. I wasn't surprised because, all along, I've been treated pretty poorly. One petition signer, who didn't know my story, summed it up best when he said, "yeah, what's wrong the Democratic party in this area, they tend to pick one candidate, coronate them, and no one else is heard." It's true. Good potential candidates are lost. I am a teacher, a Harvard graduate and a cancer survivor.

Please call and we will get you a petition form  every little bit helps. Remember, a signature on a petition is not a vote, it's just a request for democracy  for a debate and a primary on August 12. Any Connecticut Democrat may collect signatures but the signatures must be from Democrats in the Fourth Congressional District: (Bridgeport, Darien, Easton, Fairfield, Greenwich, Monroe, New Canaan, Norwalk, Oxford, Redding, Ridgefield, Shelton, Stamford, Trumbull, Weston, Westport, Wilton.)

Please help.

Gosh, Lee's so buddy with Shays (0.00 / 0)
you almost wonder if she's his payroll.

I mean, now that the Cook Report has labeled his race against Jim Himes a toss-up, he's probably hoping for any distraction from the real issues he can get.

And Lord knows, Looney Lee is a distraction all right.
