More blogging legislators in CT and less of me at MLN

by: Maura

Fri Oct 26, 2007 at 17:24:40 PM EDT

In another positive development for the Connecticut political blogosphere, Stamford mayor Dan Malloy has re-launched his gubernatorial campaign Web site as a blog, and he has lined up an impressive crew of contributors to the site, including state legislators Andrew McDonald, Andrea Stillman, Bill Finch, Mike Lawlor, and William Tong.

Tong, a freshman member of the House from Stamford, reflects today on his first year in office with a great piece:

In my first hearing on the Judiciary Committee, I sat right next to the leadership. I suppose I did this to be close to Andrew McDonald and Gerry Fox so they could stop me if I had the sudden urge to say something that could end my career before it started. The seat to my right was empty at the start of the meeting, reserved for the Republican Ranking Member, State Representative Arthur O'Neill. Shortly after the meeting started, Art came in quietly and sat down. He lost his mother that very afternoon, after a long illness. But he was there, doing his job. His grief was palpable, quiet but severe, and for the rest of the hearing I could only wonder how much strength and commitment it took for him to be there and to fulfill his responsibility. The first thing I knew about him was the depth of his humanity and commitment, and that was really all I could see. The fact that he was a Republican, or a Ranking Member, or maybe an adversary, seemed to be of very little value. I am certain that is a major reason why he and I were able to work so well together to pass landmark gun control legislation this session, a bill he had worked hard to defeat in the past.

In my experience, it's a pretty short hop over the party-affiliation wall to find a safe place to talk. It's even shorter within one's own party. So as we begin our conversation on this blog, I hope we'll work together to develop a shared vision of progressive leadership that transcends labels and assumptions. Not by simply conceding a point or two, but by respecting, hearing, and trying to understand one another. I hope we'll develop a kind of leadership that begins where Art and I started - as two decent and honorable human beings, doing our best to find pragmatic solutions and advance our state and its people as honestly, cooperatively and as capably as we can.

The whole thing is worth a read.  Rep. Tong mentions that for many people, politician is a bad word...and I can only think that allowing more people to have a window into the work of legislators will help to bridge the divide between the elected and the represented, and remind us all that politicians are people, too...and only as different from us as we allow them to be, since we're the ones who choose who gets to represent us.

In many ways, the most significant development in the CT blogosphere in the past year has been the increased participation of our elected officials in discussions, liveblogs, and guest posts.  It's great to see more elected officials getting involved in reaching out to constituents online and participating in conversations on blogs.  So many of those who have chosen to engage with us here have demonstrated in a very real way how dedicated, professional, and hardworking they are...and their commitment to public service and good governance is nothing short of inspiring.

I figure this positive news about a growing Democratic blogging community is as good a time as any to mention that I'll be stepping back from a regular blogging role here at MLN to focus on my work with the Jim Himes campaign.  As I've mentioned before, I've been supporting Jim since before he declared his candidacy, and I've been doing some part-time as a consultant to the campaign for a few months now.  Last week, I took over as campaign manager.  As you may have noticed from my lack of posts in the past week, I simply haven't had the time to keep up with regular blogging here at MLN.  I'm not signing off forever, but you'll see a lot less of me here as I focus my time on building our campaign here in the 4th.  If you haven't already, I hope you'll get involved!  Jim is an extraordinarily decent guy whose integrity and intelligence are matched only by his enormous love for his family and country.  I'm really proud to commit the next year of my life to making sure he is our next Congressman.

As for MLN, our newest MLN frontpager, CaptCT, has been a great addition to our team, and I hope other MLNers will consider stepping up to post more often and perhaps join the front-page team.  Since I am MLN's only female front-pager, I particularly hope that other progressive women will get involved and post more regularly here at MLN.

If you're a lurker, how about commenting?  If you're a commenter, become a diarist!

As I step back from regular posting, I'm thankful for my fellow front-pagers at MLN, especially tparty, for being so supportive.  And I'll forever be grateful to BranfordBoy for inviting me to join the fp crew in the first place and for being one of my best friends ever since.  You'll see less of me at MLN, but I hope to see you all at many Himes campaign events in the coming year!

We'll Miss Your Regular Postings (0.00 / 0)
But, to paraphrase an old cliche, Connecticut is not really losing a Maura, it's gaining a Jim Himes.

I'm sure you'll do a great job on the campaign.  And, with Shays giving every indication that he'd like to become Connecticut's version of George Allen, I think you'll have alot of fun working on this campaign.

Congratulations and Many Thanks (0.00 / 0)
Maura, you've worked tirelessly for CT progressive issues at MLN, and I am very grateful to the contribution your efforts have made to my understanding of issues and awareness of what is happening on CT.

Congratulations on your new role in the Himes campaign - I am certain you'll do a great job.

Thank you and good luck.  I am looking forward to more pressing questions in 2008, such as "How do you spell Congressman Himes's last name?"

Soon to be "Maura from D.C." (0.00 / 0)
Congrats and much love to you, Maura!  With you helping, I know Jim will defeat that crazy guy in the 4th!

Wow! (4.00 / 1)
Maura, you've been one of the CT blogging community's most eloquent, inspirational, and dedicated members. We're losing a true hero here at MLN, and Jim Himes is gaining one.

Jim couldn't have picked a better person to help steer him on a path towards Washington. He's in great hands.

Go slay that dragon dinosaur, and be sure to let us know how we can help.

Best of luck to and Jim.

Congrats Jim Himes (4.00 / 2)
You made a great choice.

We can all sleep better knowing this vital campaign is in good hands.

Kick ass - we know you will.

Congratulations (0.00 / 0)
You'll be missed!  So when does the campaign manager start the new Himes campaign blog?

Congrats Maura! (0.00 / 0)
And good luck to Jim Himes, one of the finer people I've met in CT politics!

Give 'em HELL!! (0.00 / 0)
Give it a real Celtic spirit, Maura!! Never back down!  Never give an inch!!  Show 'em that Democrats can fight like hell!!!

Maura, darlin' (4.00 / 1)
May the road rise to meet you.
May the wind be always at your back.
May the sun shine warm upon your face.
May the rains fall soft upon your fields.
And may the polls close a half hour before Joe Lieberman realizes they're open.

Best always (0.00 / 0)
You inspired me to miss work to help defeat LIEberman in the primary. I always found you to be a voice of common sense and reasoning.  Himes has picked a winner!

Congratulations (4.00 / 1)
Maura: There is no one better to get this done. Under your leadership we can finally take down Shays.  Thank you, thank you, thank you for your willingness to step up to the plate.

Everyone else:  Jim did good by putting Maura in the top.  Real good.  Let him know how good: DONATE.

This is bittersweet (0.00 / 0)
You have been one of my favorite (if not THE favorite) front-pagers in MLN. Although we've never met prsonally, I've always felt your online persona as being very warm and sincere. You are definitely an asset to this community.

If you have to be the campaign manager to Jim Himes, so be it. I'd vote for him just because you would be his campaign manager. Alas, I can't since my vote belongs in the 3rd CD. Yeah, DeLauro has been taking for granted my vote for many years (Actually, I jest. Rosa is more progressive for a long time than most reps I know in CT.)

Anyway, I am glad that you are not signing off completely. You'll be back. Hopefully. Til then, good luck with Jim.

If you can't post diaries because of time constraints, i hope you could still comment once in a while.

The arc of history is long, but it bends toward justice. --Martin Luther King, Jr.

Congrats Maura (0.00 / 0)
Good choice Mr. Himes!

I spent so much time admiring TRex's cats (0.00 / 0)
that I almost missed you FRONT PAGED ON FIREDOGLAKE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Did Joe really call you a plant? What an honor!

Congratulations - you are the best.

We'll miss you at MLN (0.00 / 0)
but you are going to KICK ASS as Jim's campaign manager. And hopefully kick Shays' ass right out of the 4th District!

Woo Hoo!

Congratulations Maura (4.00 / 1)
Jim Himes is obviously serious about winning, because he chose you as campaign manager!

You'll be missed around here.

Congratulations (0.00 / 0)
It seems that the Ned Lamont campaign is the gift that keeps on giving.  It looks like the job that was started on 2006 will definitely be finished next year with the demise of Shays.

Once again, congratulations on the new gig, you've certainly earned it!

I wish you the best of everything (4.00 / 1)
Jim is getting someone to kick ass out there. If you need anything from me lemme know.
