WaPo: Shays Hearts Condi, Iraq War

by: tparty

Fri Oct 26, 2007 at 09:14:49 AM EDT

(Cross-posted at Daily Kos.)

Dana Milbank:

Fourteen months ago, the Connecticut Republican, in a pitched battle to keep his seat in the House, announced that most U.S. troops should be removed from Iraq in 2007, saying that "the only way we are able to encourage some political will on the part of the Iraqis is to have a timeline for troop withdrawal." That position helped Shays squeeze out a 51 percent victory in his antiwar home state.

But yesterday, Shays sat opposite Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice in a hearing in the Rayburn House Office Building -- while ferociously defending the war and condemning Democrats for supporting a troop withdrawal. "It seems to me the basic contention of the Democratic majority is 'Because Iraq is corrupt, we need to withdraw,' " he said, "which has come down from 'Well, we weren't winning, we needed to withdraw,' 'It was immoral, we needed to withdraw.' So that's basically what's on the table, which is patently absurd."

What's even more "patently absurd" is the reason Shays gives for not supporting an end to the war - no, it's not that "the surge is a huge success!" (although he's said that before)... it's the fact that Democrats aren't kissing his ass enough:

Shays blames Democrats for his increased patience with the war. Though willing to support a pullout by December 2008 (he opposed a pullout by early 2008) he said after the hearing: "They have not reached out to me."

If we are to believe this, then one man's ego has translated into an intransigence which continues to cost our troops and their families, and our nation's treasury and soul.

And this continues to be his sickening idea of "oversight":

Shays condemned a House Democratic leader for saying that "if the Iraqi war went well it would be bad for Democrats." He said Democrats' impertinence "blows me away." As for Rice's refusal to answer questions, Shays said, "I'm happy that you have resisted."

...And when the hearing finally ended, he hurried to intercept Rice and gave her a hug. The secretary clasped his hand tenderly as she departed.

Shays could have used his position in Congress to be the chief Republican critic of the Bush administration on Iraq. But it's clear that, for whatever reason, he's decided to become their chief apologist instead.

His constituents should be embarrassed, ashamed, and furious.

crystal clear - pass it on (0.00 / 0)
People need to understand that Shays picks the targets of his obsequiousness carefully.  In 2006 it was the voters - now he is targeting George Bush's cronies for his obsequiousness.

Make no mistake - the Blackwater praise left lipstick smears on George Bush's cheek. (Erik Prince is related through being  married to a relative -- the sister??? --of Jeb's wife Columba).

If everyone would share this diary with 5 people, that would be a *good* thing.  It will take repeated exposure to this kind of story for the voters to understand what happened to the war exit rhetoric that Shays spouted long enough to get elected - Mr.  Conscience Consultation and Man of Principle, pah.

My point was obvious to me but not obvious in my post - entitled, er, "crystal clear"...

The disgusting obsequiousness of Shay's Praiser in Chief performance at the Blackwater hearings seems to indicate that the Shayz-O-Matic butt kissing apparatus is now directed at Bushco with the expectation of some trick or treat goodies for next year's re-election campaign.

The turret of the Shayz-O-Matic will swivel once more when he gets into campaign mode, and the voters will hear more of his musings of conscience as the cameras roll for corporate TV.

Is this getting old for anyone besides activists yet??

Good to see Washington's MSM starting to notice (4.00 / 2)
Watching "Both Ways" Shays contradict himself yet again doesn't surprise anyone in Connecticut who has been paying attention. Hugh Bailey reports on it here, Tom Gogola mentions it here. And now Millbank at the Washington Post nails it with a brilliant article that exposes Shays's duplicity and the damage that it causes our country.

Chris Shays acknowledges that corruption is a problem. "Iraq is corrupt," he said at the hearing yesterday. "We all know it's corrupt." Yet Shays chooses to do nothing about it. Even worse, he criticizes Democrats for confronting the Maliki government over it, opting instead to bury his head in the sand.

What kind of lawmaker acts with such blatant disregard for America's best interests? At least one Washington reporter is starting to wonder the same thing.

Budget :"My number one priority since coming to Congress has been the reduction and elimination of our annual federal budget deficits. As a senior member of the House Budget Committee, I know the best way to maintain fiscal discipline is to continue to eliminate wasteful and unnecessary federal government spending. "

National Service :"As a strong fiscal conservative,...

Patroit Act: "...Most importantly, I believe Congress must provide continual oversight."...

Taxes: "...Congress needs to control spending, in both discretionary and mandatory categories."

One would think that any HONEST person who has this publicly stated would be all in favor of getting to the bottom of the tons of lost money in Iraq.  Then again, Rep. Shays was in an oversite role and did nothing just like the rest of the 109th Congress.  What a BushCo butt kisser!
