Joe Lieberman: Worst Person in the World/New Haven Register: Worst Newspaper in the World

Joe Lieberman has decided to visit Milford (CT) on October 14th to attend a Republican fundraising event where he will provide an endorsement for the Republican candidate for Mayor.

There, that's as calmly as I can put it.

This was announced by the New Haven Register ("This just in: Newspapers Suck!") in an article which lists all of the contact information for attending and donating to the Republican fundraiser.

Lieberman stands by Milford's 'best candidate'
By: James Tinley, Register Staff
10/06/2007
MILFORD - U.S. Sen. Joseph I. Lieberman, I-Conn., is standing by the man who supported him during his rough Senate re-election campaign last year.

Lieberman will make a stop in support of the Republican Mayor James L. Richetelli Jr. at Daniel Street, a downtown nightclub, Oct. 14.

Lieberman spokesman Daniel Gerstein [remember him?] said Lieberman will show support for the "best candidate," which the senator believes is Richetelli.

Here is a photo of Lieberman and soon-to-be-former-Mayor Richetelli from their Perp Walk around the Milford Green (1/2 block from Daniel Street Club) when Lieberman visited with the Republican Town Committee during the General Election last year.
  Pontiff-icating

The article ends with the following outrageous bid for donations to the Republican party:

The event begins at 2:30 p.m. and is open to the public. For more information or to purchase tickets call (860) 878-8280.

Please do not call this number since it is someone's house in another part of the state.

There is more below what we usually call "the fold" in deference to dead tree journalists, who used to have some sort of respect due to them.

tessa :: Joe Lieberman: Worst Person in the World/New Haven Register: Worst Newspaper in the World
He [Gerstein] said Lieberman continues to caucus with Democrats in the Senate, but he is "not constrained by party politics." He said that is a reason why Lieberman receives support from Democrats and Republicans, and why he is willing to endorse Republicans as well.

When Lieberman campaigned as an independent for the Senate against Democratic-endorsed candidate Ned Lamont, Richetelli endorsed Lieberman for the position. The Milford Democratic Town Committee endorsed Lamont.

"Obviously, Senator Lieberman appreciates Mayor Richetelli's support last year," Gerstein said.

No shit, Sherlock.

The rest of the article is about a bogus photo op event staged by Lieberman and Richetelli during the summer to pre-announce funding (not yet approved by Congress) for a park cleanup in Milford. The quotes from the Democrats, Town Committee Chairman Rich Smith and Democratic Party Mayoral Candidate Kerri Rowland, are from articles and press releases in August. Today is October 7th.

Followup? you ask.

Here is an email sent out by Milford DTC member Mike Brown

Subject: Lieberman

I hope everyone is sufficiently pissed that Joe Lieberman is inserting himself in Milford politics and endorsing Richetelli.

NOW read the utterly brain dead article (attached) from the New Haven Register that actually gives the PHONE NUMBER to get TICKETS to the Republican fund raiser featuring Lieberman on October 14th.  Dan Gerstein (Lieberman's spokesperson) was quoted, because his press release was the source of the article.

Write letters. Call the editor.  This is unethical.  Someone should be fired at this stupid, worthless newspaper.

Mike Brown

  Remember, don't call that number.

Just for the record, I was sitting next to Kerri when she answered James Tinley's (Register reporter) questions on the phone.  She did not say much when asked about the Lieberman endorsement, but she did say, "The only endorsement I am interested in is the endorsement I will get from the people of Milford on November 6th."  She also said, "I hope Joe Lieberman brings the $520,000 check he promised back in August."

Neither one of these quotes were used in the article.  Instead, he used part of a quote from an August press release.  He also used a selected quote from Rich Smith's comments and incorrectly paraphrased his comments about Lieberman and the Iraq War.

Republicans will continue to control the message unless we speak up.  Call, write, yell!

Mike Brown

Call. Write. Yell.

Rubbing our nose in it? (4.00 / 4)
As much as Senator Lieberman would like to show his appreciation for Mayor Richitelli, it's not exactly a crisis requiring his attention. While he's taking a break from beating the war drums for Iran, Joe's number two priority is the mayoral election of Milford?

This stunt is purely about Joe's ego. He wants to pour salt in the wounds of 2006. He wants to remind people how much he dislikes, probably hates, the Democrats in his own state.

As always, it comes down to Joe making it about Joe. He wants the Milford election to be about Joe.

I hope Milford manages to make the election about the people of Milford. Kerri Rowland clearly is.

Richitelli and Amann BFF - can't Jim stop Joe? (4.00 / 1)
Somehow I think I smell a dead fish here.  Richitelli and Amann are longtime good friends.  Hmm, do you think Amann has the influence with Joe Lieberman to keep him out of town if Amann's serious about supporting Kerri Rowland?  If Amann's serious about Rowland, he ought to be pissed as hell about this endorsement rather than waxing philosophical -- and I would expect he'd be making statements about it.  Has Jim Amann agreed to look the other way, wink wink, wring his hands and say "what're ya gonna do - it's politics"?

Count on every clueless voter in Milford getting a robocall on election day saying get up, go vote, Kerri Rowland eats babies with ketchup. Before you figure out what happened, the polls will be closing.

No, actually, the whispering campaign will pretend that she's related to John Rowland and very corrupt...

Luckily there are some very serious issues that OUGHT to motivate people to look for a change away from the current regime.  Inept handling of purple ooze near where kids play, and it turns out to be life threateningly toxic?  If this doesn't upset people, they are the walking dead.

That is someone's home phone line in Newington. It is the Milford Republican Party phone number in Milford with the wrong area code (should be 203).

Someone should write a dailykos diary about this (4.00 / 1)
And make sure you let the entire progressive online community know that Lieberman is fundraising for a CT Republican. The last time Lieberman fundraised for a Republican(Collins in main), it was a great boon to the Democrat, who got more then double what Lieberman raised. Perhaps Kerri Rowland can also benefit from it as well.

I'm going to send a donation to Kerri Rowland (4.00 / 2)

The rec'd diary at the top of the list at Dailykos. Great job. I hope this brings in some great money. This should get picked up for a front page link once the diary leaves the rec list. It's important.

Lieberman is the worse thing that has happened to this country, politically, since George Bush. Absolutely gross.

I hope the dough is rolling in, nothing is worse than Lieberman. And it's so important to get good solid Democrats like Kerri elected in these key offices across the country.

Thanks for all your hard work.

How close is this race? (4.00 / 2)
It would be useful for people like me who are just reading about this and the Milford mayor's race to know how close this race is.  Not that I wouldn't love to send a message to counter Lieberman's effort to support the GOP, but I'd like to know if it's just a symbolic action or if it could make a difference.

Does Rowland have a shot at this race?  Is she a serious candidate?  Etc.

If someone could give some info on this thread that would be a great help.

Get Out The Vote is key here.
The Kerri Rowland for Mayor campaign needs money and volunteers.

It is estimated that Richetelli will raise $25K on Oct 14th alone. He sent out 4 mailers in one week, which may have been an error by his mailing house. Such a lit message is estimated to have cost about $30K.

Lieberman will probably arrange for paid "volunteers" to canvass households and get out voters.

Money Changes Everything.

Even with a good turnout getting these Unaffiliated voters to get rid of a longterm incumbent is no mean feat.

Lieberman may have given Rowland an opening here.

Lieberman carried Milford in 2006 (0.00 / 0)
Sad to say, but LIEberman carried Milford during the '06 battle.  Of course, having CT House Majority Amann - one of our Representative from MILFORD - also endorse Lyin' Joe probabily didn't help much either.

The R party has been entrenched in Milford for too many yrs now.  Dems started to make some headway with the Bd of Adlermen last cycle, but are still the minority.  The Bd of Ed and the P&Z are still pretty stacked with R's.

I had some dealings with Richitelli.  While  he is a nice guy, he fell flat on his face with the issue I asked for help with.  He lost my vote.

Has Joe supported a democratic candidate since his 2006 election?  We know about his support for McCain and his overall Republican help in the Senate.

Has he supported ANY Dem?

Didn't have to look too hard -

Just checked my email and found this: (0.00 / 0)

Dear concerned citizen:

Thank you for your correspondence of September 17, 2007 in which you allude to the Daily Kos diary referring to Senator Joseph Lieberman's registration as a Democrat in Stamford, Connecticut.

On July 10, 2006, Dr. John M. Orman wrote to me with a request to ask Attorney General Richard Blumenthal for a ruling on the legality of Senator Lieberman's actions in forming the Connecticut for Lieberman Party and then running on the ballot under that new party designation following his loss in the August 2006 Democratic Primary.  After consulting with my Elections Administration attorneys, I determined that there was no illegality on the part of Senator Lieberman.

Connecticut election laws do not require a candidate to join the party for which he or she is running.  In addition, our federal and state constitutions grant citizens the right to associate with the party of their choice.  Because Senator Lieberman complied with all of the statutory requirements, by securing and filing the required petition signatures and the party's endorsement statement, to run and appear in the November 2006 ballot as a candidate for that party, there was no impropriety on his part.  Hence, a ruling by the Attorney General was not necessary.

Under current election laws Senator Lieberman was allowed to run for Connecticut for Lieberman while remaining a registered Democrat.  The Senator has registered as a Democrat in Stamford, his new town of residence, as would any other Connecticut resident moving to a new municipality.  Likewise, under current law, he did not have to register as a Connecticut for Lieberman elector.  Accordingly, only the Connecticut General Assembly can take this matter to the next level by passing a new law that would impose such restrictions on candidates.

Thank you for bringing this matter to my attention and please feel free to call me at (860) 509-6200 if you wish to speak to me about it.

Sincerely,

Susan Bysiewicz

Secretary of the State

Is this visit sanctioned by CT for Lieberman? (4.00 / 2)

OK. Different question (4.00 / 2)
Okay, ask a question and get the answer to that question.  This strikes me as a bit cagey, but maybe it's just me:  "Under current election laws Senator Lieberman 'was allowed'[my quotes] to run for CFL while remaining a registered Democrat" would appear to be a calculated and carefully couched statement.

Sec. 9-61. Prima facie evidence supporting discretionary erasure or exclusion. Enrollment in any other political party or organization, active affiliation with any other political party or organization, knowingly being a candidate at any primary or caucus of any other party or political organization, or being a candidate for office under the designation of another party or organization, within a period of two years prior to the date of the notice as provided in section 9-60 shall be prima facie evidence that any elector committing any such act is not affiliated with, or in good faith a member of, and does not intend to support the principles or candidates of the party upon the enrollment list of which his name appears or in which his application for enrollment is pending; and, upon reasonable proof of the commission of any one of such acts, the name of any such elector may be stricken or excluded from such list and such erasure or exclusion shall be effective for a period of two years from the date of any such act.

In other words, the phrase "was allowed" is coy and evasive, and avoids saying for example "New Haven Registrar of Voters Sharon Ferrucci allowed..."  When you explore the statute that she ruled on, it would appear that she used inappropriate criteria for her ruling, because she didn't use the above description of prima facie evidence for erasure or expulsion, she made up her own criterion.  This is a state statute applying to any registered party -- this is not a Democratic party bylaw!

Ferrucci said, "The Dems have a big tent".  Well, yeah -- and now it includes endorsing GOP candidates.  Exactly how big is that tent, Sharon?  And where do I find the "big tent" exclusion in the statutes?

So if you ask the question, "Can he run on another ticket?" the answer appears to be yes.  But you didn't ask the question, are there any legal penalties that may be applied -- and again, the answer to that is YES.

I find I'm left cold by Susan Bysiewicz's use of language that implies she is evenhanded and frequent invocation of the word Constitution suggesting she has fully studied the legal implications -- but find her reply a conveniently incomplete discussion of Connecticut statutes as regards  Joe's express lane to victory.

Get me a geek or a nerd for SOTS, someone passionate about democracy and aggressive about creating fair elections who immerses themselves in the law and *understands and explains it* fully so as to educate, rather than vaguely so as to placate.  Please?

Is Bushman invited? (4.00 / 1)
A friend of Ann Coulter is a friend of mine  :)

Joe Lieberman and George Bush believe that our govt should cut and run on capturing Osama Bin Laden so that Bush and the neocons could invade Iraq. Despite no Wmds and no links to 9/11, Lieberman supports that decision.

I think Joe would LOVE to see Bushman again! (4.00 / 1)

... if Democratic Senator Chris Dodd and/or CT's Democratic Congressmen -- Rosa DeLauro, Joe Courtney, Chris Murphy, and John Larson -- attended a fundraiser for Rowland, ideally on the same night as the Repub fundraiser.

Have any of these folks gotten involved in local elections? If so, I haven't seen it. They should.

Congressional delegation (0.00 / 0)
As I've been poking around campaign sites, I've noticed all of them except Dodd appearing at fundraisers for municipal candidates this year.  Normally, the House members would go to events in their district, so DeLauro would be the logical person.

Due to the any-second-now birthing of Rosa's stepdaughter's baby, all plans are moment-by-moment. This is understandable.

Rosa, the special guest at the dem event..?
I remember her saying(summer of 06)that she was disappointed the people of ct did not elect Joe in the primary.  Maybe she'll rendezvous with Joe after to reconfirm old friendships (and maybe a giggle over the move-on censure success).  I am usually left cold by her actions, like Joe she has been around too long and owes too many favors.
