Chris Shays and his travel buddy Brian Baird were on the PBS NewsHour last night, blowing more sunshine as Magical September begins. (Note the exclamation point in the transcript):
REP. CHRISTOPHER SHAYS (R), Connecticut: Well, first off, to say that these trips are dog-and-pony shows just is outrageous. I mean, Jan was there for one day, and she comes to that conclusion....
The surge is working. As much as some Democrats may not like it, the surge is working. But the thing that's more successful is the fact that Sunni tribal leaders who are fighting us have turned with us. We have cleaned up Anbar province, the largest province. It connects Syria to Baghdad, the Euphrates River. It's a huge success! It astonishes me why people aren't willing to at least acknowledge the successes and then talk about what we do.
The other part is the odds the new plan in Baghdad will work. If you had asked me two years ago, I would have said three out of four, if you ask me now, I think it is one out of four. What we now need to do is think of our Plan B, which could be to take our troops and put them on the borders and let the Sunnis and Shias fight it out. Finally, Plan C is absolute failure, which would be awful.
So a "one in four" chance of working now counts as a "huge success".
Either that, or Chris Shays is losing his mind. Take your pick.
Oh, and he also called for permanent bases in Iraq:
That's why I happen to think we need a timeline so both realize we're not going to cut-and-run and we're not going to be there forever in a military way, except for this point: We are going to have, I think, permanent bases in the area, maybe in Iraq, to maintain stability in the region.
Update: Shays thinks it's a "huge success," Bush thinks we're "kicking ass":
[Bush] believes success is being achieved in Iraq and told the Deputy Prime Minister, Mark Vaile, upon arrival on Tuesday night that "we're kicking ass".
