Rennie Rags on Lieberman

by: spazeboy

Sun Apr 02, 2006 at 10:03:29 AM EDT

From the "Other Opinion" page in today's Courant (found the link via Atrios->NedLamont.com).
"Lieberman campaign manager Sean Smith, said this past week when asked about supporting the winner of the August primary, "This is a campaign, man, we are in this to win. We're not thinking about those contingencies." Note to Sen. Lieberman: You may want to have someone who doesn't speak like a Valley Boy issuing your statements."

Oh snap!

Tom Swan says:

"Ned Lamont will support the Democratic nominee."

That was easy!

spazeboy :: Rennie Rags on Lieberman

This column really requires little commentary, it's your standard compare and contrast exercise from 9th grade english. "For 6 points, compare and contrast the Democrat with the faux-Democrat."

Rennie picks up on one of the great things about Ned Lamont: He's not desperate. Taking a call on McEnroe's radio show:

"...Lamont quickly dissociated himself from his ugly-minded supporter and launched into a paean to Lieberman's patriotism."

(The call referenced, I believe, was from March 16 on WTIC 1080, which you can download from my site here.

I'm hoping that the Courant posts a link to this soon, if not, I'll have to scan it if it doesn't show up on iConn.

Here's the link.

Sean Smith (0.00 / 0)
I would still like more background on this character. Is he a hired gun "from away", as we say? I've never been a fan of hiring outside help for a political campaign. They treat all voters like a big numbers game and have no real knowledge of local issues. And apparently they make mistakes. Lots of them.

Ned scored a major coup getting Tom Swan on board early. Experienced, with a thorough knowledge of grassroots issues. Invaluable in a campaign such as this.

Yeah, Smith is West Coast based (0.00 / 0)
Most recently, he was Communications Director for the Kerry-Edwards campaign in Nevada.

Smith has worked in politics for the past fourteen years.  He was a communications staffer on Bill Clinton's first presidential campaign in 1992.  He has managed the communications strategies for dozens of political campaigns in Oregon and California.  For the past two years he lived in San Diego where he taught courses on media and politics at the University of California San Diego.  He was also a political analyst for NBC 7/39 in San Diego.

More googling... (0.00 / 0)
In 2000, he managed a campaign seeking to abolish the death penalty in Oregon.

The initiative failed to qualify for the ballot after almost 25% of the signatures the campaign gathered were invalidated.

we should keep an eye on this (0.00 / 0)
for when Joe submits signatures to get on the ballot as an Independent

One reason why Ned wants 30,000 signatures too (0.00 / 0)
..instead of just 15,000.

Thanks (0.00 / 0)
I noticed there was also a Sam Lieberman working on the Kerry campaign in Nevada. Lieberman is fairly common name but I wonder if he's related?

Sam Lieberman is a graduate of the University of Las Vegas, Nevada, and has been a Las Vegas resident since 1980.  He served on the staffs of Senator Harry Reid and Congresswoman Shelley Berkley.  Currently, Sam is an outreach specialist for the non-profit community and a grassroots political activist for the Democratic Party.  He serves as Vice President for Citizen Alert's Board of Directors.  He is also Chair of the Volunteer Center of Southern Nevada Board of Directors and Chair of the Alzheimer's Association Regional Leadership Council.
