Lieberman Rules Out Independent Run

by: thirdparty

Wed Mar 29, 2006 at 22:35:17 PM EST

So says Walter Shapiro in an article on the race at Salon:

For his part, Lieberman insisted, as he ruled out an independent campaign for the Senate, "I am a Democrat. I believe in the Democratic Party. I believe in the vision of JFK and, I must say, the vision of Bill Clinton."

Note, he didn't say anything about ruling out a GOP run.

Other news from the article:

  • Lamont tells Salon he "may invest as much as $500,000 of his own money in the contest."

  • Lamont reveals his favorite candidate in the 2004 primaries was Bob Graham, although he did give $500 to Lieberman's campaign.

  • Jim Dean of DFA has these very kind words for Ned: "I think [the primary is] good for the party, no matter how many votes Ned gets. He's getting people fired up."

  • One-third is the number being floated as the most optimistic possibility for delegates at the convention.

  • Ned and Jim Dean will be seated together at the JJB dinner tomorrow night.

Will Lieberman show up? (0.00 / 0)
Wonder if he will make the effort to go now that Ned Lamont will attend.

Joe Lieberman, you're full of crap (0.00 / 0)

I try to restrain myself. I try to stick to the issues and resist name calling and swearing. But, who the f*&^ does Joe Lieberman think he's kidding? He believes in the "vision of Bill Clinton." Is this the same Joe Lieberman that voted IN FAVOR of impeachment for Clinton but refuses to consider censure of George Bush? The same Joe Lieberman that shot down the Clinton health care plan - a core component of the Clinton vision?

And, don't even get me started on JFK. If Kennedy were alive today he'd be rolling over in his grave!

Joe Lieberman never voted to Impeach Clinton (0.00 / 0)
In fact his speech for Censure probably did Clinton way more harm than good.
Lets stick to the fact.

No Dem Senators did (0.00 / 0)
Surprisingly a few Repubs supported Clinton, perhaps only because they knew there would never be near the 67 votes needed.

Congress was different as five Dem's voted for at least one of the four articles and the resolution was passed, needing only 50%+1.

Mea Culpa (0.00 / 0)
In my moment of rage I wrote "impeachment" instead of "censure." The point is still the same. Hopefully I haven't discredited myself.

I'm not convinced (0.00 / 0)
I fail to see how Shapiro turns ""I am a Democrat. I believe in the Democratic Party. I believe in the vision of JFK and, I must say, the vision of Bill Clinton" into "no independent run."

If Joe said, "I will not run as an independent," that should have been the quote.

Joe has also said he plans to be on the ballot in November to defend "my" seat no matter what.

For my money, Joe is not yet on the record as to whether he will live and die a Democrat.

But we're working on it.

And by "the vision of Bill Clinton," my guess is Joe meant "let's all act like Republicans because they seem to be so successful acting that way."

I wasn't either (0.00 / 0)
Shapiro confirmed to me via email that he stands by his characterization of Lieberman ruling out a third-party run.

[ Parent ]
Did he tell you... (0.00 / 0)
...what Joe actually said? Or did he just say "I stand by my characterization?"

The Holy Grail in all this is getting Joe on video saying categorically that he will not run as an independent.

[ Parent ]
No specific quote (0.00 / 0)
But he was clear.

And, as I point out, neither the author nor Lieberman say anything about a GOP run.

I'd prefer getting Joe on record saying "I will support the Democratic nominee for Senate."

[ Parent ]
Me too (0.00 / 0)
..but since that presupposes that Joe could manage to lose the thing he'll never say that.

Perception is everything in politics. Right now Ned is on a dizzying ascendency whilst Lieberman and his cohorts look confused and under siege. I think our buddy Sean Smith had to make a qualifying statement about this being the honeymoon period for Lamont. With repeated Lieberman missteps this could be a very long honeymoon indeed.

Lieberman booed at Connecticut state Democratic party dinner tonight
by John in DC - 3/30/2006 08:40:00 PM

We just got a call from someone attending the dinner that Lieberman was just introduced and got loudly booed by the audience.
