Lieberman Votes Against Protecting Troops

by: tparty

Wed Jul 11, 2007 at 13:16:37 PM EDT

Actually, it's worse... he voted to block a vote on the Webb amendment that would have required more rest and better training for our National Guard and Armed Forces serving in Iraq and Afghanistan:

Just moments ago, Senate Republicans succeeded in a filibuster in which they refused to end debate on Virginia Democrat Jim Webb's S. 2012, which would have placed strict limits on National Guard and reserve deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan as well as mandating more downtime at home before active-duty combat troops are returned to battle.

The vote was 56-41 to end debate, with 60 votes needed to move to a full, up-or-down vote on the Webb measure. Once again, the GOP has been successful at destroying another Democratic attempt at helping service members and their families caught in the buzzsaw of the Bush administration's lies and incompetence.

Seven GOP Senators voted support of the Webb amendment:

Chuck Hagel (co-sponsor)
Olympia Snowe
Susan Collins
Gordon Smith
John Sununu
John Warner
Norm Coleman

As Lawrence Korb of the Center for American Progress put it yesterday:

Regardless of whether a member supports a phased withdrawal of American forces from Iraq or continues to support President Bush’s latest escalation, he or she should support the Webb-Hagel amendment to the 2008 Defense Authorization Bill.

It takes two full years at home or after a one year deployment for a unit to become fully combat ready. Spending a year at home after a year in the combat zone is barely enough time to get themselves marginally ready physically and mentally for the next deployment. Giving them last time would mean sending units and individuals into battle who are not combat ready.

Members cannot vote against Webb-Hagel and claim they support the troops. Sending people back for another tour without the same amount of time at home as the length of their tour is wrong strategically and morally.

The Military Officers Association of America also endorsed the legislation.

Who's "sniping" at our troops again?

"The always worthless...." (0.00 / 0)
Of course, the always-worthless Joe Lieberman voted with Republicans to kill Webb's troop-protection amendment to the Defense Department authorization bill, along with Senator Pete Domenici (R-NM) who just showed how sincere he is in his statements about breaking ranks with George W. Bush on the Iraq occupation.

Ain't that the truth....

Let's Hope This Vote Gets the Press it Deserves... (4.00 / 1)
When soldiers are exhausted and overextended, they put themselves and their fellow troops in greater danger. We've seen it right here in Connecticut.

NEW HAVEN -- The last time Pfc. Andre Craig Jr., called home, on Saturday, he told his mom he was exhausted. The 24-year-old infantryman had been on patrol all night, family members said.

Then he left for a mission, they said. Soon afterward, the Humvee in which Craig was riding in was struck by an improvised explosive device in Baghdad. He died Monday from his wounds, according to the Department of Defense.
[...]
But family members said the call also left them unsettled, wondering whether the soldiers' exhaustion and the 24-hour watch Craig described had contributed to Craig's death.

"We believe that's why we lost Andre," said Erik Brown, Craig's godfather. "Had they been able to rest, Andre would be alive today."

Does Joe care? No. He didn't even bother to go to the funeral.

The funeral story link is here.

This is such an outrage (4.00 / 1)
One of our own Connecticut soldiers dies partly due to overwork and exhaustion, and Lieberman votes against a policy that would give our troops needed rest.  To add insult to injury, Lieberman didn't even have the decency to pay his respects to the family at his funeral.

Disgusting.

LIE-berman (0.00 / 0)
Please have someone from your news out lets ask LIE-berman just one question. If you believe that this war is going so great and the ground troops do not need rest, why is your SON or DAUGHTER not in a U.S.A. uniform. I am not from your state but his votes are KILLING my friends SONS an DAUGHTERS. Someone with GUTS pleas ask that question.

having a unique last name (4.00 / 1)
I am proud to say that the list of active duty 82nd Airborne has my nephew's name on it.

So, Joe, I have a family member who is going into harms way.

You don't.

I want the war ended so he won't have to die for your lies.

Now if you will be kind enough to put some kin on the line or SHUT THE F&%K UP!

The question is not what you are, we already determined that, we are now negotiating price.
