Gem of an RNC Mailing

by: mr B

Fri Jun 22, 2007 at 11:34:14 AM EDT

I received a gem of a fund raiser mailing from the RNC earlier this week railing against "big union bosses, radical environmentalists and trial lawyers"(Which is posted below)
It was interesting in the sense that it is in the form of a "survey of the republican party".  The mailing included a 4 page letter, the survey itself (which asked extremely leading questions) and a prepaid envelope to return the completed survey.  The letter also asks for $11 to process the survey and donations as ranging from $25- $500.  Now, I have to say this was not a typical mass mailing, it was a targeted mailing to Strong Republicans, most likely primary voters who donate large amounts of money... It was addressed directly to me.  Now i have only lived at my present address since this February and have donated to only one presidential candidate since living there (a democrat)... I am not even registered to vote in the town yet so i have no idea how they got my name.
mr B :: Gem of an RNC Mailing
***REPUBLICAN NATIONAL COMMITTEE***

Dear Fellow Republican-

You are among a select group of Republicans who have been chosen to take part in the official 2007 CENSUS OF THE REPUBLICAN PARTY

Enclosed is your new 2007 GOP CENSUS DOCUMENT, which was assigned and prepared especially for you as a representative of all Republicans in your voting district.

REGISTRATION #:  XXXXXX

VOTING DISRICT CODE:  XXXXXX

Your answers will be used to develop a NEW BLUEPRINT for the Republican Party for the next 10 years, a BLUEPRINT to rebuild our Party from the grassroots up.

But, because it is cost prohibitive for the Republican Party to print and mail an official REPUBLICAN PARTY CENSUS to each and every on of the 62,000,000 Republicans nationwide, your answers will represent the views and opinions of ALL Republican voters living in your voting district.

So even if you are undecided about some questions, please complete your GOP CENSUS and return it in the next 7 days to ensure we get ample and accurate results.

There is little doubt the 2006 election was a setback for our Party. For the first time since the 1990 election, the Democrats turned out more of their liberal voters than we did Republican voters!  The Democrat Party and their allies -- the big labor bosses, the radical environmentalists, the gun grabbers and the trial lawyers –beat us on the ground.

They not only took control of the U.S. House and Senate, they also had a net gain of 300 legislative seats, took control of nine more state legislatures and gained six governorships!

This is a critical time for us: If we don’t want the Democrats to become the majority party in America for a generation or more, we’ve got to get our Republican Party back on track for the 2008 House, Senate and Presidential elections and beyond.

That’s why your 2007 GOP CENSUS DOCUMENT is so important.

Should our Republican Party be centered around the conservative principles of President Ronald Reagan?

Should we fight to make sure the Democrats don’t repeal President Bush’s successful tax cuts?

Do you think our Republicans in Congress should unite in opposition to Democrat attempts to get rid of our new law to increase border security?

If the Democrats try to strip away the increased accountability standards for schools under the No Child Left Behind bill, should we do all we can to stop them?

What if Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid try to cut funding for our military and intelligence agencies?  Or if they try to gut the USA Patriot Act?  Should we do everything we can to ensure our troops have what they need to keep us safe?

Make no mistake – without your answers to the REPUBLICAN PARTY CENSUS DOCUMENT questions…

… our Republican leadership – Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell, House Republican Leader John Boehner, me and even President Bush – will not know how you and other Republicans at the grassroots level of our Party feel about the critical issues facing our nation.

And the Republican National Committee (RNC) will be unable to develop a conservative legislative agenda and get all Republican elected representative behind it!

Without your answers, the RNC cannot fully create a campaign plan to organize, educate and mobilize Republican voters in every voter precinct.

Unless we hear from YOU,  we will not have an accurate BLUEPRINT – a full legislative agenda and campaign plan --  and a unified Republican Party.

So please complete your GOP CENSUS DOCUMENT right away.

If we don’t get back on track right now, the Democrats – led by liberals Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid – will become the majority party for a generation or more.  And you will hand the Democrats’ presidential candidates – Hillary Clinton, Barack Obama, John Edwards – the keys to the White House.

The RNC is the only Republican Party Committee responsible for BOTH the Senate and House campaign plans to retake our Republican majorities.  We are the only Party Committee that can directly support our 2008 Republican presidential candidate.

And we are the only Republican Party Committee that can unify our entire Party nationwide before 2008!

That’s why your GOP CENSUS DOCUMET is so important.  We can’t get back on track without knowing where you – and other Republican leaders across the country – want us to go as a Party.  And we can’t win elections without your enthusiastic support.

You see, it all comes down to two things: We have to unify our GOP around a conservative legislative agenda.  Then we need to use tried and true, old-fashioned methods of grassroots contact: phone calls and door-to-door canvassing, postcards and letters to likely Republican voters to get our people to the polls.

So please don’t delay in completing your official GOP CENSUS DOCUMENT.

Based on your responses, the RNC plans to print and mail a REPUBLICAN PARTY CENSUS to 6.2 million of your fellow Republicans so that we can get a statistically reliable sampling of our Party.

But at a cost of $.40 each, our CENSUS OF THE REPUBLICAN PARTY will cost over $2.48 million.

So along with your completed GOP CENSUS DOCUMENT, wont you also enclose a contribution of $500, $250, $100, $50, $35, or even $25 to the RNC?

Your gift of $500 will allow 1250 of your fellow Republicans to take part in this official census.  And $250 will help us reach 625 of our fellow party activists.

But more importantly, your contribution of any amount will help us rebuild and unify our Republican Party in advance of the 2008 elections.

I don’t need to tell you that the last four national elections were extremely close.  Just 7,231 more votes in the 2006 Virginia Senate race or 2,847 more votes in the 2006 Montana Senate race and Republicans would still be the majority in the Senate.

President Bush won reelection in 2004 by less than 3 percent.  Increased Republican turnout in Ohio thanks to the RNC 72-Hour Program made the difference.

But we cannot increase turnout unless our Party is united behind a strong conservative agenda for America and a solid, issue-based campaign plan.  If we fail at creating a NEW BLUEPRINT for our Party, a liberal Democrat like Hillary Clinton or Barack Obama will become President.
President Bush’s tax cuts will be repealed

Welfare Reform will be overturned and the Democrats will institute new government make-work, give-away programs.

Government spending will go through the roof.  And the liberals will cut our defense and intelligence budgets to the bone.

The liberal special interests have been re-energized with their victory in 2006.  The big union bosses, the radical environmentalists, the gun-grabbers and the trial lawyers are already raising huge amounts of money and working hand-in-glove with the Democrat Party for the 2008 election.

We Republicans have got to recommit to our principals and work hard to win back our majorities in Congress and maintain the White House.
The first step in developing a NEW BLUEPRINT for the GOP is your completed GOP CENSUS.  The best way to unify and energize Republicans is with a strong conservative agenda that reflects the concerns of our grassroots base.  Won’t you please:
  1. Complete  your specially registered REPUBLICAN  PARTY CENSUS and return it to me today,  and;
  2. Enclose  your most generous gift of $500, $250, $100, $50, $35, or even $25 to help  the RNC mail an official REPUBLICAN  PARTY CENSUS to 6.2 million Republicans nationwide.
Remember your new GOP CENSUS is among the first to be mailed; we are all counting on you.

Sincerely,
Robert M. “Mike” Duncan
Chairman

P.S.  It is important that I receive your completed REPUBLICAN PARTY CENSUS back in the next seven days.  Based on your answers, the RNC will mail an additional 6.2 million GOP CENSUS DOCUMENTS to your fellow Republicans in the next 4-6 weeks to unify and rebuild our Party for the critical 2008 election.

So please do not delay in completing your new GOP CENSUS and please also make your most generous contribution of $500, $250, $100, $50, $35, or even $25 to help with our GOP CENSUS project.  Thank you.

I couldn't help (0.00 / 0)
but add the tag "Junk Mail" to your diary, in reference to the RNC mailing, of course! :)

Thanks for putting this up. It is obvious from this mailing that they have nothing but the "same old same old" to run their campaigns on.

Very interesting (4.00 / 1)
The RNC uses microtargeting data much more effectively than the dems do.... just to take a guess, perhaps you bought an SUV lately, or have a hunting license?

Also, the GOP doesn't just hit large donors -- they take an "in for a penny, in for a pound" approach, by which I mean they assume that if they can get $11 out of someone, later they can be mined for much more. Of course, this will be done using the very data that was submitted in the survey -- if you pick abortion as your issue, for example, they'll target you for donations to anti-abortion candidates with literature leaning on the issue heavily.

"The RNC uses microtargeting data much more effectively than the dems do...."

It is also how they have been so effective in illegaly purging voters from voting lists. It is how they built their "Caging Lists".

To be fair (4.00 / 1)
I get fake surveys from the DNC quite often, with a lot of leading questions similarly designed to elicit donations. (Do you support a woman's right to choice? Raising the minimum wage?) Honestly, I consider it insulting to my intelligence - it's so obvious that they aren't looking for actual information, just money. Almost as bad as those banner ads "Is Bush doing a good job?" or "Should Paris Hilton go to Jail?" followed by "Answer the survey and get a free* Xbox/Wii/iPod/iphone/whatever." I guess the marketers are targeting really impulsive people.

*requires forking over your credit card and bank information and going through 3,000 hoops before you get the actual gadget which was probably bought for cheap on ebay.

Yes - And at least the Republican ones mention war (0.00 / 0)
I received surveys in 2005 from CT State Central and complained because they failed to ask about security or the Iraq war in any form when prioritizing issues.  They promised to not do that again. But the next mailing was the same.

Also Hilary sent a similar mailing too, failing to mention security or the Iraq War as issues to prioritize.

I'm not talking about for or against the War, but just at least asking if we think its an important issue for the party  or a candidate to be concerned with.

This is obviously very problematic. Have you thought about taking the issue up with your state central members?

Mail Fraud (4.00 / 2)
Of course they are not going to "tabulate" your survey so this is probably mail fraud. I used to get these all the time - probably because I own a business - and would alwasy send them back - either with all the appropriate no answers or blank, just to annoy them and make them pay the return postage.

Good idea (4.00 / 1)
Make sure you tie a brick to the post-paid mailing before you drop it in the mailbox.

They'll tabulate the replies (4.00 / 1)
Several years ago I took a course in direct mail fundraising because a non profit I'm on the BOD for was looking to start an annual campaign.

That survey is a market research tool.

By cross tabulating the replies, and the size of the donations, they'll know more about what to say in future letters.
