Just Do It Already

( - promoted by Maura)

Please. I'll paint the (R) on your office door myself.

``I hope the moment doesn't come that I feel so separated from the caucus'' that he decides to shift allegiance to the Republicans, he said in an interview. Asked what Democratic actions might cause such a break, he invoked Supreme Court Justice Potter Stewart's famous 1964 definition of pornography: ``I'll know it when I see it.''

As has been explained again and again, the current organizing resolution in the Senate does not make any provisions for a sudden tilt in party control, as it did in 2001 when the Jeffords switch tilted control to Democrats. The only way McConnell could get any concessions from Reid would be to completely gum up the works in the Senate - something he'd have zero public support for doing. Joe's Democratic colleagues in the Senate who think he's still a Democrat would - one hopes - finally be righteously enraged, and in no mood to concede anything.

This petty man seems to give an interview every week making idle threats about doing something he repeatedly promised his constituents he wouldn't do throughout last year, thinking he's holding the majority hostage, thinking he's been dealt a full house. But in fact he's just holding a pair of deuces.

He's got nothing to gain by officially becoming a Republican and everything to lose. Conversely, he's got everything to gain by continuing to get the media to uncritically report on his repeated threats to break the key campaign promise that won him about a third of the Democratic vote, and the election, in November.

So, go ahead, do it.

Update: Greg Sargent has more.

Joe's tickler file (4.00 / 1)
I think someone should do an analysis of when these threats appear in the news -- I'm convinced that Lieberman has a recurring calendar item on Outlook saying "Threaten to become a Republican" just so he can get some attention for himself on a regular basis.

The next threat, in 10 days or so, should be titled here as "The Boy Who Cried Wolf".

Agreed (0.00 / 0)
Sort of like his yearly presser about violence in video games.

At this point Lieberman is in the Greatest Hits stage of his political career.

Even his GH's have been assigned to the bargain bin (0.00 / 0)
The absolute apex of Lieberman's career was the when he went on stage with Al Gore at the democratic convention in August 2000. There were warning signs of what was to follow with the cozy mock debate with Dick Cheney and then into 2002 as he went in front for the democrats to bang the drum for war, glorious war. The precipitous decline began when he ran his ridiculous presidential campaign.

Joe's Greatest Hits (volume 1) (4.00 / 4)
Track listing:

1. The Terrorists Will Follow Us Home
2. Rap Music is Bad
3. Moral Outrage A Go-Go
4. Switchin' Parties (Or Not)
5. The Greenwich Millionaire (Remix)
6. It's All The Fault of Grand Theft Auto
7. The Fox News Medley
8. A Simple Kiss
9. Give the Surge Time to Work
10. Partisan Polarization Polka

Yes (4.00 / 2)
thank you for the artistic inspiration.

Campaigning for Republicans (4.00 / 2)
And of course this is exactly why he's campaigning for Republican senators. The worst thing that could happen to Joe in 2008 would be Democratic gains in the Senate. It's in his best interest to keep the margin exactly as it is, since it's the only thing that lends these stale old threats their (false) air of newsworthiness.

I'm certain that there will be Democratic pickups in '08, and I cannot wait for that to cut Joe's stupid press events off at the knees.

Here's What the Dems Might Do: (0.00 / 0)
1. Slam Joe for his stance on the war -- including his lies about wanting to bring home the troops prior to the election.

2. Slam Joe for supporting the re-election of Republican Senator Collins and Republican Congressman Shays.

3. Go campaign for Tom Allen, Collins' opponent up in Maine, while ...

4. ... slamming Joe and Collins for no oversight on the Homeland Security Committee, and announcing that Joe is losing his his chairmanship (can Reid do that?). Given the lack of oversight, Reid is fully justified in doing this.

5. When Joe switches loyalties and caucuses with the Repubs, slam Joe for lying during the election about always caucusing with Democrats.

6. When the Senate gets stalemated on big issues -- as it already is now -- blame it (rightly) on the Republicans and Joe Lieberman. Point out that progresss on big issues will only be made AFTER the Democrats win a clear majority in the Senate.

The only thing you lose with this scenario is Senate oversight committees, so maybe wait until after Rove, Goodling, etc., testify under oath, or some other opportune moment. But it would great if Reid, Dodd, Feingold, Clinton, Obama and other top Dem Senators finally exposed Lieberman as the lying, incompetent, self-serving rat that he is.

Help Wanted: Prestigious Senate Career Opportunity (0.00 / 0)
A repost since the position has yet to be filled:
A prestigious opportunity for career advancement in the Senate:

The Democratic party is in search of a new Chairman (or chairwoman/chairperson)  for the Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs. Moderate Senators need only apply.(1)

The Chairman's responsibilities and Jurisdictions will include real oversight concerning failures of the Bush administration in providing security to our nation during times of war, illegal invasions, ongoing occupations, and natural disasters, as well as overseeing the bloated budget and operations of the largest branch of government ever to be created in the US governments' history through legislation authored under the Republican controlled Senate and House,  and signed by the Republican pResident of the time.

Your main and immidiate responsibilities will include holding the needed hearings, directing sub-commitees and legislation needed to avoid repeating the previous disasters, corrupt practices, and failures that will be found with the propper direction and oversight of a NON-PARTISAN and ethical Senate leader.

Send all applications to Senator Harry Reid(2)

(1)Minorities such as moderate Republicans having no ties to far-right-wing radical organizations like the Neoconservative movement, the American Enterprise Instute, The Heritage Foundation, Energy Corporations, or the Bush administrations most recent policy proposals that are doomed to failure, are encouraged to apply to  Senator Harry Reid for any consideration concerning this soon to be available position.

(2)Note to applicants: Please mark the subject of the Email as "Homeland Security" and refer to this x-posted Blog diary in the opening paragragh of the application. You will be contacted shortly before I post an "I told you so!" diary covering the flawed positons, election statement lies, and propaganda of the far-right-wing radical Neoconservative Joe Lieberman.

After he switches (4.00 / 4)
he will probably threaten the Democratic Caucus by telling them he will switch back.
