Joe Flips Out!

by: thirdparty

Wed Mar 22, 2006 at 18:03:38 PM EST

And whines about "bloggers."

On WTIC this afternoon, the Senator completely flipped out at Colin McEnroe for his criticism of Lieberman in a column this weekend. Audio here, on the right of the page. I don't have time to transcribe it right now, but it really is something to hear from a sitting senator.

Joe is losing it.

Bumbling, bitter, and out-of-touch.

Update: direct link to mp3 at WTIC here.

Partial transcript up at Firedoglake:

Lieberman:  This quote is totally out of context.  You might have gotten it from the bloggers, who love to do this.

McEnroe:  No actually I got it…

Lieberman:  Read the whole speech, it’s below your standards.

McEnroe:  Senator actually I got it from the New York Times.

Lieberman:  Well that’s just as bad!  Go back and read the speech, be more responsible.

Wow (0.00 / 0)
He sounds like a nut!

Joe is delusional but it shows that Colin's op ed really hit home (4.00 / 1)
Joe just can't take criticism.  Pompous people rarely do.

Lieberman is also trying to muddy the water on his controversial statement made in December and he tried to blame the bloggers for misquoting him and taking his comments out of context.  Colin responded that he got the quote from the NY Times and that he did not misquote the senator.  Hah!!

Joe claims that he also calls on Repukes to cut out their partisanship, but Joe the Repukes don't want to play fair.  They never have and never will.

Joe also took a line from Bush.  He claims that a major reason to vote for him is that he works HARD for CT bringing in "pork".  Hey, Simmons, Johnson, and Shays will say the same thing.  Incumbants always do.

And Joe again trys to whittle Ned's campaign down to a "single issue" campaign.

Lieberman said that the only part of Colin's op ed he agreed with was comparing Ned Lamont to The Cat in the Hat.  Joe said he liked to think of himself as the Lorax.  It's been a while since I read Dr. Seuss, but I thought the Cat in the Hat was a trickster character who brought about change, usually change for the better.  The Lorax is more like Al Gore and his upcoming movie -- The Inconvenient Truth.

Joe's comments reminded me about how the French aristocrats were out of touch (4.00 / 1)
with their people on the eve of the French Revolution.  Lieberman has the same arrogance that those aristocrats had and I found his overall tone in this interview to be condescending to Colin and to us in general.  "How dare we the people of CT oppose him or even think of voting for a political neophyte, like Ned Lamont," so thought Lieberman.

Lieberman thinks that the bloggers are slandering him, but as Colin pointed out, Lieberman's quotes were from traditional newspapers.

Cool (4.00 / 1)
Colin didn't get the line from "Some bloggers" but the New York Times, which to Dear old Joe is "just as bad"..

Way to go Joe!

If you right click here and select "save target as" or "save link as" you can get the file.

I was going to capture the stream and upload it, but since they already have it for download (via a little link detective work... :) )I thought I'd just post the link for everyone to enjoy.

I've got the TiVo tuned to Imus for tomorrow morning and will get the Joe video online tomorrow night after work.  Let's hope this downward spiral continues!

Reminds me of someone else (4.00 / 1)
Somone who flips out over any criticism as unwarranted and especially vehement against those who prove disloyal, as McEnroe did here.

Reminds me of whom?

George W. Bush.

Petty, insecure, out-of-touch....

I see nothing better than to bring up Joe's own words and use them against him. Especially those he's been cozy with over the years. Tim Russert? Tweety? Chris Matthews? Don Imus? Sean Hannity? Who's the next one to blow Joe's stack (so to speak)?

This is viral! (4.00 / 1)
I've seen news of this outburst posted on a couple sites already, including mydd.com. Certainly this has the potential to help lock in the sense that Lieberman is frustrated and reactionary while Lamont is the energetic, young, and full of ideas.

If only we can convince the mainstream media to cover this as a Lieberman outburst of frustration...

Post over at Daily Kos now! (4.00 / 2)
There was a lame diary earlier tonight but I put a fair bit of  effort into making a better one just now. Go over there and post a comment. Keep the thread alive.

Just made the recommended list (4.00 / 2)
..which means it'll be read by about 1000-10,000 people tonight.

Also threw a plug in for you bloggers that Joe hates so much.

[ Parent ]
It's fun to rag on Lieberman for flipping out, but let's focus on the issues (0.00 / 0)
I just listened to the interview. His remarks about the bloggers were amusing and revealed an awefully paranoid side to his personality. During the interview Joe tried to defend his record. Let's look at a few of the issues he brought up.

Joe said "I've worked hard, fought and delivered for the state." I would like to know what he delivered on the following:

  • Funding for Transportation: when's the last time Joe tried to drive on I-95 or rode Metro North? Transportation is a disater in Connecticut. Our lack of infrastructure is one of the major impediments to job creation and economic growth. If Joe has done such a great job delivering on transportation, why is the transportation problem one of the top issues of the Governer's race?
  • Protecting Jobs: Connecticut has one of the worst records in the country for job creation. Over the past 10 years or so our state has lost thousands of good, high paying jobs. Yes, many new jobs were created, but the labor stats are misleading. The new job creation has been at the low end of the payscale. So, we've traded good jobs for crappy jobs. Nice work, Joe (and some credit to Rowland/Rell too.)
  • Fighting for Funding for Education: Connecticut is more reliant on property taxes to fund education than pretty much any other state (I believe we're #1 in this category, but don't have access to the data right now). To quote Ned Lamont, "maybe Senator Lieberman should stop by Bridgeport on his way back from Baghdad." Spend some time visiting our schools, talking to principals and parents and then ask yourself if you've really fought hard enough for education funding.
  • Having the Ability to Work Across Party Lines: Perhaps you're confusing bi-partisanship with selling out your party's values. If being the guy that the Republicans call on when they want to claim bi-partisan support, then yes Joe, you're the man!

I do agree with Lieberman that there's too much partisanship, and I don't expect my Senator to vote the official party line 100% of the time. What Lieberman doesn't get is that by saying this he's actually making a nice argument for supporting Ned Lamont. Based on how he has stood up to the Democratic leadership so far, I have no fear that Lamont will just vote the party line. Even better, maybe he can help get the party line pointed back in the right direction.

There are some core Democratic values that can't be compromised. This is where Lieberman is off base. If you join the other side on these core issues, then you can't claim to represent Democrats. Here's a few that come to mind: a woman's right to choose (egregious screw up on Alito), holding our President accountable to the Constitution (too many screw ups to list), keeping government out of our personal and religious decisions (serious screw up on Terri Shiavo.)
