Marriage Equality Opponents Gone Wild!

by: mikect

Tue Apr 10, 2007 at 07:46:20 AM EDT

The loons came out of the woodwork for the recent Judiciary Committee hearing on the marriage equality bill.  Easily the most bizarre and colorful testimony came from Robert Muckle, Vice President of Connecticut Right to Life.  In this video, I've added visual aids to help flesh out his unique arguments.

Muckle was only one of many eccentric, homophobic, and unintentionally comic speakers to grace the hearing.  The video below highlights some of the more entertaining and disturbing representatives of the anti-gay fringe.  The final speaker is particularly over the top.  They demonstrate that one of the best ways to win the marriage equality debate is to let the opposition speak - in a loud, spontaneous, and unguarded fashion.

Now for something completely different (0.00 / 0)
Poor attorney Stuart Caplan (and a tiny handful of others) waited more than four hours in an eleven hour hearing to testify on a bill other than the marriage equality proposal.  He had the misfortune to testify immediately after the "dolphin man" (see second video above).  His otherwise routine introduction caused the tense and conflicted room to erupt into laughter and applause.

was the idiot who believes there should be a religious test for public office.

What part of the Constitution didn't he understand?

All of it!

The question is not what you are, we already determined that, we are now negotiating price.

Slippery slope alert! (0.00 / 0)
Gah!  6:40 on the backward counter.  OK Maura, I'm coming around :P

that poor woman (0.00 / 0)
feels discriminated against due to her religion...

Hmmm, let me check Federal Law.

Why there is a Federal protection against discriminating agaist her due to religion. Now, I'm sure this anti-discrimination act has something in here that protects people from being discriminated against due to their choice of partner...

What? There is nothing? No Federal Protection at all based on choice of partner? So you can discriminate against some one due to their choice of partner according to the Federal government, but not due to their choice of religion?

And she feels discriminated against? She's freaking "protected" and the people she is attacking aren't.

Alas, she doesn't care as long as she has her protections and can freely bash those that don't enjoy her federal protections while she screams how much of a victim she is.

The question is not what you are, we already determined that, we are now negotiating price.

This is hilarious (0.00 / 0)
I love the clip that you used repeatedly for "culture of life", and the whole sequence about teaching natural family planning to other couples was just priceless.  You did an amazing job of finding great footage to accompany this testimony!!!

Best YouTube clip of 2007 in the CT political blogosphere, IMO.  (so far, anyway!)

Contraception gave me the heebie-jeebies the night of the hearing, and he STILL gives 'em to me.  Just imagine him, and his lovely wife, coming over to explain sex and your ovaries.

Great video!

Mr. Muckle needs a dermatologist. (4.00 / 1)
I don't want to pull a Bill Frist in here. But, what struck me most from the first video is Mr. Muckle's 3 dark spots on his forehead. If I were Mr. Muckle, I wouldn't worry too much about "sexual marriage". What does he mean by that anyway? I guess he's a proponent of "asexual marriage" if he's against "sexual marriage"?

Anyway, going back to those dark spots, Mr Muckle either needs an HIV test or a skin biopsy.

And one more thing, my priest in high school once told us that Life is a sexually transmitted disease. And, it results in death, in the end.

The arc of history is long, but it bends toward justice. --Martin Luther King, Jr.

Dermatologist? (0.00 / 0)
I suspect Mr. Muckle would be more comfortable going for an exorcism than going to a physician.

"Life is a sexually transmitted disease. And, it results in death, in the end." That was one wise priest.

Your second video looks like America Funniest Video. (0.00 / 0)
To the testifiers on your second vid:

If I was a sane, thinking conservative against gay marriage, I would have screened these people before they testified, because they certainly DID NOT help their cause!

Good job with the vids, Mike! Love the dolphins in the end.

Nearly wetting my pants.... (4.00 / 1)
Oh my lord - having been through this for the last few years I just have to laugh a the nuttiness.  I thought we had it good in Rhode Island when last year a guy showed up with two nuts and two bolts, startend banging the nuts against each other, and shouting, "SEE?  SEE?  They're no good by themselves!"

In any event, I'm using your video to help get folks in the Ocean State ready for a visit to Crazy Town - where Dolphin Man is clearly the mayor.

How can we fail to win? (4.00 / 1)
Thanks to everyone for the kind words and for sharing in the comic wit and wisdom of the religious right!

With an opposition like this, how can we fail to win soon?

As I watched these folks, I couldn't help relishing the delicious irony that they were trying to convince the two gay co-chairs of the committee (and at least one lesbian committee member) to vote against their own equality.  It must have driven the homophobes up the wall.

And for those popping into this page from other Web sites - these wingnuts have inspired the Judiciary Committee to vote today for marriage equality legislation 27-15!  This makes making Connecticut only the second state in the country to win a marriage vote in a state legislature, according to Love Makes a Family.  (Here are the votes.)

virality gone wild (4.00 / 1)
Melissa McEwan, aka Shakespeare's Sister, and formerly of the John Edwards campaign, has created a touching pictoral tribute to the speakers in the video, who are sure to be drowning their troubles after the Judiciary Committee's vote.  You may recall Barry "Sexual Detoxification" Clifton and Ben "A marriage between a man and a woman is, in fact, between a man and woman" Stratford.

And to help in your nominations for the Golden Dolphin award, she has written out a transcript of the "Gone Wild" video.

Somewhat O/T (0.00 / 0)
This is awesome, Mike!  I wonder if Melissa missed your original Muckle video, since his unintentional hilarity really rivals that whole other crew put together!  :-)

The viewership stats on both your videos on YouTube from this hearing are amazing!

BTW, did you get my email yesterday about enlisting your talent in our next viral video scheme?  If not, please email me at MLN dot Maura at gmail dot com.
