Is Shays Losing It?

by: tparty

Tue Mar 20, 2007 at 00:03:17 AM EDT

In just the latest example of some really increasingly erratic behavior, Chris Shays seems to have spent a good portion of his morning today bizarrely attacking former NASA scientist James Hansen, who was testifying before the House Government Reform Committee. Hansen, you'll remember, was the goverment climate change expert who came forward last year claiming that his research was being censored by the Bush Administration because his scientific conclusions didn't match the Administration's political agenda.

As GristMill liveblogged this morning, Hansen's testimony in defense of his research was enough to drive Shays into full-on defend-Bush-at-all-costs mode:

Shays v. Hansen. Shays: do you really think you have no restrictions whatsoever on what you can say? The media affairs rules were established in 1987. That means your right to speak out is restrained! Would you acknowledge that? Hansen: sure. Shays: there are times you can speak out and other times you can't. Correct? Hansen: probably that's true. Shays: no, it's true. Do you edit what your employees do or question what they say? Hansen: in terms of science, yes. Shays: do your employees have the right to say whatever they want, whenever they want? Give me an honest answer, you're under oath. Hansen: within the constraints of what's reasonable, I don't constrain employees...

More at this diary at Daily Kos (Update: I somehow missed this gem of a quote:)

"You're waving around the Constitution, saying 'I'm an American, I can say anything I want.'"

[Christopher Shays to James Hansen]

Apparently Shays also proceeded to mock and attack Al Gore for his "hypocritical" stance on climate change. Hopefully there will be video soon. I can't imagine this is what the League of Conservation Voters had in mind when they endorsed him last year.

But hey, at least he didn't call global warming a "sex ring." I guess.

About 2h55m into this we get one of an assorted Shays harangues. He really is a piece of work.

Plug this into realplayer.

Shays & Bill O'Reilly (4.00 / 1)
Following up on his boorish performance last month, Shays is revealing himself to be a Bill O'Reilly-style bully.

To file a complaint about the destructive judgement of the League of Conservation Voters in endorsing Shays and to encourage them to shun him in 2008, contact Tony Massaro, Senior Vice President for Political Affairs and Public Education, at tony_massaro AT lcv.org

Here's testimony from the hearing.

Hearing on C-SPAN right now (0.00 / 0)
For any other insane late-nighters, this hearing is being re-broadcast on C-SPAN right now.

I'm listening to the stunning performance of Darryl Issa (R-Bushland) right now -- he's talking about how he's befuddled about Pluto and not beholden to the car alarm industry... (?) and other strange ramblings intended to praise the Bush lackey who edited scientific findings and attempt to discredit the actual scientist on the panel.

Dr. Hansen from NASA is quite dry and calm and is handling all this ridiculousness quite well so far.  He's not getting defensive and is sticking to science and the scientific method.

Shays opening comment (4.00 / 1)
Okay, just caught the first set of Shays comments, which included a bizarre intro citing "two inconvenient truths", one of which is that some Republicans don't accept global warming and the other being that some Democrats don't accept the inconvenient truth of the "Islamist terror threat".

Bizarre.

The rest of this round of questioning seemed to be Shays seeking to establish that the 2001 National Academy report on global warming wasn't very definitive and left a door open for the possibility that "the debate wasn't over" on global warming, which Dr. Hansen attempted to refute.

Unbelievable! (4.00 / 1)
I was watching all this on C-Span, and my jaw hit the floor when I heard Shays start  interrogating this man. The man Shays is questioning, Hansen, had the courage to alert the nation to the dangers of global warming, and Chris Shays is grilling him on whether he has a RIGHT TO SPEAK!

This reminds me of the moment during the 2006 campaign when Shays claimed that there was no torture at Abu Ghraib.

He has truly gone off the deep end.

This is only a suprise if you've never met Shays (0.00 / 0)
Trueblue and I both considered Shays a moderate and a pretty reasonable Republican until we spoke with him at Yale 2 years ago.We praised him for news reports that he was standing up to Tom DeLay but to our suprise he defended DeLays leadership and went off on a tangent about how Democrats allow Al Sharpton in our Party. When we explained that Al Sharpton wasn't a member of the Dem Leadership in the house ad didn't set the Houses agenda he still didn't get it.

I really believe Shays is Mentally ill.His incoherant speech the night of the election, the "sexring" comment and many other instances are evidence of a very sick individual.Maybe the blood dripping from the hands of a supposed coscientious objector finaly got to him.

I find this ironic as Shays (0.00 / 0)
emits greenhouse gasses every time he opens his piehole.

who voted for this putz?

oh right.. we did.

*we being Connecticut.. I'm in Murphy country, thank God!

LCV also endorsed Lieberman (0.00 / 0)
I just delete all the emails I get from them since that time.

Full transcript of Constitution quote (4.00 / 2)
As the person whose orginal transcription is the one being quoted around the blogs, I felt it was necessary to go back and get the fully accurate quote. Here's the passage, which comes at 2:56:40 in the hearing.

Mr. Shays: Dr. Hansen, I think that we won't have a world to live in if we continue our neglectful ways. And so, I don't disagree one bit with what you believe and how you're expressing it. I just want to state that. And frankly I don't know if I would have called you before this hearing.

But you're here, and I'm going to deal with what you say because I find it, I find it puzzling and I find your answers candidly inconsistent. And it's not "I got you." I'm just trying to understand. When you had Mr. Issa ask you a question you didn't want to say that the imagery to Hitler's Germany was inappropriate. With Mr. Saud you did. And now you're saying it's only the Soviet Union.

We have a young man who made a mistake and he said, "You know, I made a mistake and let me get on with my life."

What puzzles me that you don't even want to admit a mistake when you make them. And you seem to stand up waving the Constitution as if, somehow, you have no restraints, at all! "I'm an American, I can say anything I want." I'd like to just ask you about that.
