What's new and news, from your daily source of leftist extremism:

  • Does Wal-Mart's reputation in Connecticut need to be damaged further? Apparently so, as commonweal documents Wal-Mart's SLAPP lawsuits to muzzle opponents to the proposed Groton store.
  • Check out Drowsy's run-down of developments in the Julie Amero case.
  • Tom Swan ran a session at the Democracy for America Night School, Holding Elected Leaders Accountable. (PDF link here.) It's a guide to help plan effective constituent meetings with elected officials.
  • Speaking of DFA, the Norwalk / Silver Star DFA will be having a universal healthcare discussion at their meeting tonight (no linky, website down).

There's also a Planned Parenthood phonebank in New Haven, an Amy Goodman appearance at Connecticut College, and a Bridgeport Young Dems meeting tonight - for more info, see the events calendar in the top left.

  • Documenting the atrocities: for the completists, Lieberman and Cheney hanging out after the Libby verdict.
  • It's rare that a statement is so brazen that it's able to shock me, here in 2007, but this one does it:

Harwe, 26 at the time, was rushed to the hospital, where she learned that her left vertebral artery had been crushed. In the days and years that followed, Harwe suffered from paralysis, vision loss, weakness and coordination problems, a paralyzed vocal cord and an inability to swallow. Today, she still uses a feeding tube.

Harwe plans to tell state lawmakers Monday that she had no idea stroke was one of the risks of cervical manipulation by a chiropractor. The legislature's Public Health Committee is considering legislation that would require chiropractors to inform patients, both in writing and verbally, of the risks and possible side effects of their treatments.

State chiropractors say the legislation is unnecessary and unfairly punitive. They argue that a state law requiring a patient to give informed consent before a procedure is excessive given the statistically remote risk of injury and death.

"[A]t best this proposal is a misplaced attempt at patient advocacy and is perhaps prejudicial against the chiropractic profession," said Dr. Matthew N. Pagano, D.C., president of the Connecticut Chiropractic Association.

    Wow.

Anything else we should know about?

Something Else To Know About (0.00 / 0)
This has been raging in certain places for about a week now. Should i do a Diary about this with more detail?

I'm so sorry, folks.

Estonia conducts elections on the web (4.00 / 1)
Thought this was of interest.

What happened?

On Sunday 4 March, Estonia played host to a grand experiment: Internet voting for parliament. People who used this system could vote from Monday to Wednesday last week, in advance of the paper ballots.

How did it go?

Apparently without a hitch. For those keen on Estonian politics: the Reform Party won the election narrowly, with 31 out of 101 seats, closely followed by the Centre Party, with 29 seats.

Why is Estonia first to do this?

Officials at the Estonian secretariat of the electoral committee say that Estonia's recent history (the country finally broke away from Soviet power very recently, in 1991) has created a country whose populace are open to changing ideas and new technologies.

Coupled to this, the Estonian state has introduced an electronic identity (e-ID) card as a primary form of identification, and this is held by more than 1 million Estonians. The card can be used for administration purposes, such as tax returns - and now for voting.

So voters couldn't just stick a password into a website to vote?

No. To vote electronically, users needed their e-ID card and a special card reader. Such readers were placed in banks, libraries and some Internet cafes, as well as being available for home purchase for about 7 euros (US$9).

More at News@Nature.

You'd have to think this publicity would attract hackers in search of a challenge like grad students to free pizza. Especially if larger countries undertake web voting.

-Lawrence Summers

Air America 2.0 (4.00 / 1)
Mark Green posted this yesterday in HuffPo:

Today my family formally purchases and takes over Air America Radio. Why? Because if progressive values were a stock, now is the time to buy.

The arc of history is long, but it bends toward justice. --Martin Luther King, Jr.

Chiropractors are not doctors (0.00 / 0)
And, they should stop calling themselves that. Do we call physical therapists, doctors? What about occupational therapists? Massage therapists?

Still, I think it's funny that chiropractors have the gall to call themselves "doctors" but they think they are above the "informed consent" laws which real doctors are bound to.

When a patient asks me what I think about chiropractors, I tell them if you think they make your low back feel better, then go ahead. But, do not let them manipulate your neck. There's a lot of leeway with low back manipulation. The neck is a smaller area and has more delicate structures which when injured results in serious problems.
