Ken Held in Lockup for Blog Comments about Rell's Inaugural Ball?

by: Maura

Fri Jan 05, 2007 at 23:32:54 PM EST

Mark Pazniokas filed his Courant story tonight on the arrest of Ken Krayeske, Cliff Thornton's campaign manager and a peaceful political activist, at Jodi Rell's parade (previous MLN posts on this topic here and here).

Paz makes note in his article of this comment that Ken wrote at Connecticut Local Politics:

Whose going to protest the inaugural ball Jan. 3 with me? No need to make nice after watching this documentary about CJTS

Paz hasn't yet connected this comment to the aspect of this whole outrage that I think is nearly as interesting as the revelation that CTIC has a list of political activists deemed troublesome to Rell -- the fact that the bond for Krayeske was set at the absurdly high level of $75,000.

Since Ken couldn't make this bond, he was kept in lockup all afternoon and night...and then mysteriously sprung without having to make bond at all, simply on promise to appear, at 1:00 AM.

Rell's inaugural ball, which Ken commented at CLP that he'd like to protest, ended at 1:00 AM.

WickedStepmother

Rather than being Cinderalla, was Rell actually the Wicked Stepmother, using antiterrorism intelligence agencies, law enforcement, and criminal justice resources to keep a pesky political activist like Ken from crashing her inaugural ball?

UPDATE: ATalbot has written a beautiful must-read diary about his experiences with Ken Krayeske when Ken was briefly a staffer with the Lamont campaign.  Great stuff.

UPDATE 2: Hey, Ken Krayeske has a Web site and blog, the 40 Year Plan, which is where he wrote the other quote that Paz found.  Here's his post about the inaugural ball and his plans to take pictures of Rell on the day he was arrested.  Ken doesn't write much about the arrest except his headline on a link to the CTNewsJunkie story, which reads, This really, really sucked.

Blog Comments (0.00 / 0)
I can't believe he was being monitored on local blogs, and that those comments were actually presented to the press.

I searched, but no luck yet (0.00 / 0)
Google turns up nothing, the MLN search came up with nothing.  Ken comments at CTNewsJunkie often, but the comment section there doesn't appear to be searchable.

Bingo!!! (4.00 / 1)
Found it!  And a whole web site written by Ken, too.

Here's his post about his concerns about the parade, his plans to take photos there, and this incredibly ironic paragraph, given what happened to him:

Uniformed National Guardsmen swarmed around the Legislative Office Building Tuesday afternoon in preparation for Rell's Wednesday afternoon swearing in ceremony, making it safe from terrorists, one figures.

I scoped the area because I hoped to snap some photos of Rell during the inaug. I want file shots so when I report on her governance, I can have fresh images for the loyal viewing audience. Unfortunately, according to Mr. Harris, I won't have much access[...]

Making it "safe" from Ken, apparently.  Sad.

I think this explains a lot n/t (0.00 / 0)

Doesn't say that (4.00 / 1)
Remember from the Yale panel, Paz says he reads the blogs from time to time?  he's hip enough to do a search and try to see what's out there.  Nowhere does the article attribute the info from the blogs to any particular source, such as the police.  It's possible - but unclear.

Paz hard at work (0.00 / 0)
I assume it was just Pazniokas doing his homework, getting good background on Ken, since Paz reads blogs and probably remembered that Ken comments occasionally.

But I also don't doubt that an intelligence dossier on someone like Ken would collect his online comments.  I mean, if I was gathering info on anyone, the very first place I'd start today would be Google.  Seems likely that whoever is keeping the "political activists" intelligence is watching what we do online.

Associated Press picks up story (0.00 / 0)
Here's the AP story that I found via the courant.com website:

http://www.courant.c...

In it, it refers to Ken's other freelancing gigs.

Well, one of them is -- or was -- at the Courant (see quotes from a feature story link which refers to Courant gig):

"But Ken Krayeske, who runs the Hartford Courant’s monthly teen section, MetroBridge, thinks youth sections appeal even to those without kids."
(10/11/04, Newspaper Assn of America feature - link may not be working)

Quote from Ken in the story:

Besides offering practical help, youth sections also offer feel-good news, fun stuff and inspiration of sorts that people often complain the “regular” sections of the newspaper lack.

A high school security guard in Connecticut was so touched by one young man’s tale that he gave him $72. The teen had written a cover story in MetroBridge, the paper’s youth section, about going out of town to visit his “so-called father” and getting stiffed out of the cash his mom had sent for his train ride home. The security guard wanted to compensate for the father’s negligence.

Krayeske has watched similar things happen, thanks to teen writing.

“Youth voices need to be heard by everyone,” he says, “whether or not you have kids.”

He thinks that the youth benefit from getting to write, but that the adults benefit even more. And if adults will listen to what the teens are saying, societal changes can actually start to occur.

In 30 years, Krayeske predicts every daily newspaper in the country will have a youth section.

“I think,” he says of youth writing, “it really is a great equalizer.”

***MAN DOES HE SOUND DANGEROUS!!!!!!!!***************

'From time to time' (0.00 / 0)
..meant religiously, as soon as he got every morning through the primary and into the midterms. There was a running joke Charles was ghostwriting for him because the LamontBlog was so thorough.

[ Parent ]
was trying to average it out! (0.00 / 0)
He said he was all over them in the campaign, but afterwards, has not followed as closely by far.

Does that count as from time to time?

And...yes, now I can make sense of the fact that I noticed that tparty seems to concur with my assessment he (MP) reads blogs ; )
