Joe gets a new mouthpiece

by: Scarce

(note: As a blogger I'm not bound by journalistic standards so I'll steal directly from Colin McEnroe's blog, as well as most of his story from a press release apparently put out by Lieberman's office today.)

Lieberman Announces Appointment of New Senate Communications Director Marshall Wittmann

Senator lauds Wittmann's diverse background, independence

WASHINGTON
- Senator Joe Lieberman (ID-CT) announced today he has appointed Marshall Wittmann, formerly a Senior Fellow at the Democratic Leadership Council (DLC) and Communications Director to Sen. John McCain (R-AZ), to replace Senate Communications Director Casey Aden-Wansbury, who left Lieberman's office last month to join the Children's Defense Fund (CDF).

"There is no better person to take the helm during this new time in my Senate career than Marshall," Lieberman said.  " Marshall has been a trusted outside advisor to me for some time now and I'm glad he will be bring his experience and wisdom to my staff.  Those qualities, along with his independence and diverse background, make him the ideal captain of my new Senate Communications team."

Wittmann, a registered Independent, has a Bachelors degree in Elementary Education and a Masters degree in Social Work from the University of Michigan.  Since 2004, he has been a Senior Fellow at the DLC.  Prior to that, he served as Communications Director to Sen. McCain from 2002-2004.  From 2000-2002, Wittmann was a Senior Fellow at the Hudson Institute. (Colin notes: Current Hudson scholars include Norman Podhoretz and Scooter Libby.) During the 1990's, Wittmann did stints as Legislative Director for both the Heritage Foundation and the Christian Coalition.  A native of Waco, Texas, Wittmann began his career by working as a social worker in Ann Arbor ,Michigan.

"It is both an honor and a privilege to have this opportunity to join Senator Lieberman's staff," Wittmann said.  "The people of Connecticut and indeed all of America are fortunate to have his independent leadership in the Senate.  I look forward to being part of his team."

Wittmann was and is one of the most strident of Lieberman fans. In fact, his Bull Moose blog is directly linked to joe2006.com, in a classy display symbolizing what to my mind the Lieberman campaign was all about.

That isn't the part of the anatomy most apt to describe this n/t (0.00 / 0)

Great. That's just what CT needs. (0.00 / 0)
But then again, this isn't about CT; this is about two conservative self-righteous scolds who are trying to hang on to relevance.

Joe's acting totally in character (0.00 / 0)
Of course Marshall Whittless is going to be the new "Minister of Disinformation" for Lord Lieberman.  Why wouldn't he be?

I wonder why McCain jettisoned the guy if he's such a genius?

Please tell me Gerstein is making the move into Lieberman's senate office as Press Secretary. Imagine the gems we'll get from a Whitman/Gerstein duo.

One thing though, isn't this a huge step down for Whitman? Going from DLC and McCain to Lieberman? McCain's office would afford him a spot on the presidential campaign and the DLC is big fish. Comms Director for Lieberman should be a job that doesn't allow for vertical movement...

...Is Joe thinking about running for president (or VP) in 2008?

McCain/Lieberman 08 On" A Unity Ticket" (0.00 / 0)
jut got one step closer.I predicted it in  early 2005 and I was told I was nuts.

Both McCain and Lieberman are only relevent until 08.McCain can't win the Republican Nomiation and running against Both Parties in 08 and only needing 35-40% to win will look pretty easy.

[ Parent ]
Not necessarily (0.00 / 0)
McCain is positioning himself to run for the Republican nomination, with a hard-right emphasis. With no clear challenger other than Giuliani the door is open for McCain to win it.

[ Parent ]
A three way race is easier for McCain (0.00 / 0)
as he gets to keep his phoney "maverick" label and 35% wins.

Why wear the scarlet R or D when you can run against both and win?

[ Parent ]
Problematic either way (0.00 / 0)
Politicians, almost like real human beings, usually choose the path of least resistance. I've got to think unless McCain knows he's not allowed to secure the Republican nomination will go that route.

CT was the trial run? (0.00 / 0)
I agree with you CTKeith.  Something like that, or bloomberg in the mix (if only for his computerized likely voter ID tools), would not at all surprise me.

The neocon defense agenda reinvents itself as "independent", or "bipartisan".

Complete with street theatre.

[ Parent ]
Yep (4.00 / 1)
I agree with both of you. McCain and Lieberman are two peas in the same pod with their neocon views and their facade of centrism and bi-partisanship. With McCain working hard to improve his reich wing bona-fides and Lieberman calling himself an "Independent Democrat", they are certainly angling for that "unity party" charade.

Whitman's decision to join Holy Joe and his past association with McCain only makes the suspicion that much stronger.

And, like Lieberman, Whitman is just another Republican right winger masquerading as a centrist Democrat. If you can stomach it, read his Bull Moose blog and you'll see what I mean. Hard to tell the difference between Whitman and the nastiest elements on the right, like Hannity and Limbaugh.

[ Parent ]
Maybe something simpler (0.00 / 0)
Lieberman probably made Wittmann an offer he coulnd't refuse, a mutually beneficial relationship. With between $3 and $7 million left in his coffers Lieberman probably looks at Wittmann as increasing his own status, giving himself an undeserved air of legitimacy, an important consideration for someone in a bastardized union of Republican support still calling himself a Democrat.

[ Parent ]
Possible (0.00 / 0)
Genghis has been saying this for awhile.  Scary, scary idea.

now witless

please, someone, once again tell me how the DLC serves Democrats.

The question is not what you are, we already determined that, we are now negotiating price.

Whitman Quotes (0.00 / 0)
From Raw Story:
At his blog, Bull Moose, Wittmann has accused liberal and Democratic critics in the blogosphere of comprising "a left wing Cult of Bush Hatred."

"Because in the left wing universe, one must oppose everything the President supports," Wittmann wrote in February. "The truth is that a good part of the left believes that George W. Bush is a greater threat to America than Osama bin Laden."

Thank goodness we have wise men like Joe LIEberman and Marshall Whitless to remind us liberals that "we criticise President Bush at our nation's peril".

They would be correct in their beliefs (0.00 / 0)
If you wiped the foam off people's mouths and gave them a list of dastardly words and deeds and reframed some of what Bush has actually done as "threats", and then asked them who had either done them or said they would do them, I guarantee you, you could quickly find out how many know what Bush has done.  Hint:  Don't bet money on Wittman's horse.

I have long felt that such a pop quiz is overdue for negative Ned Lamont and Holy Joe Lieberman.

But I digress.

Whores of a feather . . . (0.00 / 0)
Here's NYT take on Wittmann:

If that link doesn't work, try this one to the same story:

http://www.nytimes.c...

Lieberman, Wittmann, McCain . . . all self-promoting whores selling out to the highest bidder for their own enrichment, power madness and ego gratification.

Thanks again Connecticut.

Senator's choice a move to the right

WASHINGTON — Sen. Joe Lieberman has turned to D.C. quote machine and political chameleon Marshall Wittmann to be his communications director.

Bull Moose (0.00 / 0)
I'm reminded of Harry Truman's comment about Theodore Roosevelt:  "More bull than moose."
