More Senate Debates? You Decide.

by: NewHavenBoy

Tue Oct 24, 2006 at 14:14:35 PM EDT

During last night's debate, Ned Lamont proposed further debates in each congressional district.
Lamont said he would prefer a debate in every congressional district over a continuation of campaigning by 30-second commercials.

Alan Schlesinger agreed.
Schlesinger ... happily accepted their invitation.
NewHavenBoy :: More Senate Debates? You Decide.
Wait?!? Their invitation?  Did Joe Lieberman actually have the courage to propose further debates?  No.  Instead, he sat on stage smiling and appearing receptive to appease his low-information voters.  Joe even fooled the Courant:
Lieberman appeared to call for more debates as he bemoaned the negative tone of the campaign.

Fooled you!  After the cameras were turned off, Joe Lieberman decided it best not to have to discuss the issues anymore:
Lieberman said he believed that three probably were enough.

The Courant wants to know whether further debates would help voters decide who to support.  Take the poll here.

lets get the Republican v the Democrat! (0.00 / 0)
Duh. isn't that the usual combination?

am I naive? (0.00 / 0)
I think this would be a great way to shake things up. Unless some polls show dramatic movement by the end of this week (ie post-debate), what have we got to lose?

Agree (0.00 / 0)
If Joe's not willing to participate, so be it.  No TV outlet will likely be willing to participate, but TV coverage isn't everything.  Diane Farrell has debated Chris Shays a multitude of times and most were not televised anywhere, and it seems to be working for her.  A republican-democrat debate would also demontrate to the people that Joe Lieberman is not willing to talk about the issues.  What's there to lose?

good question. (0.00 / 0)
We've all guessed that a vote for Alan is a vote away from Joe.  I'd like to see one more poll to see if that is true.  If so, then let 'er rip.  I'd wonder what a Fox News panel would do to Ned though.  Jeebus, can't be much worse than Mark Davis, but you never know. I think if the candidates could suggest and then vet the questions it might be OK.  That way it might focus on plans and not gotcha moments.

I have a proposal... (4.00 / 1)
how about the CT Bloggers invite the cadidates to a debate and allow local media to pose the question?  I have access to several 3 CCD cameras and we could cover it and put it online.

I think Ned and Alan would go for it (0.00 / 0)
Joe, of course, would whine about nattering naybobs of negative blogging and stay away.

I propose TWO questioners who will also co-moderate.

The great part is that they are both with MSNBC and I'm sure that MSNBC would LOVE to play in this game.

The question is not what you are, we already determined that, we are now negotiating price.

people's town meeting (0.00 / 0)
Why not go whole hog and really have it by, of, and for the people?  Forget the high dollar pundits.

I find by far the most compelling coverage of this race is by bloggers.  It is often far more in depth, covers things MSM doesn't have time to cover.  I see no need to bring in the MSM on this one.

maybe political beat reporters or some college professors or even really astute local activists could ask the questions.

If in fact a debate is desired, hire a REAL debate expert or Rules of Order type person to ride herd (someone who judges high school debates could do a better job than Stephanopoulos).  If Joe's not there, riding herd will not be necessary as both Alan and Ned debate by the rules.

Invite people from many different interest groups to be in the audience.  Take their questions in advance, assemble them in an order that optimizes a rich, full discussion of issues, and let er rip.

I found some of the most interesting moments in the debate were points and comments by the minor party candidates.

There are some highly thoughtful and capable people who will never see the MSM light of day, but could bring QUALITY to this discussion, which our political dialogue sorely needs.

No zingers, no posturing - just really what's on your mind.

Links to the debate video can be spread virally.

The truth is pretty damned exciting.
