Post-Debate Wrap-Up

by: spazeboy

Mon Oct 23, 2006 at 21:23:10 PM EDT

More open thread for you guys.

Hat tip to JET_powered in the comments of the previous debate post for pointing out the official Ned Lamont blog's statement (emphasis added):

Two quick points before I head down to the post-debate conference.

1.) Joe dug his heels in on Iraq. Remember during the June debate when Joe said things were getting better in Iraq? Well… different story tonight.

2.) Charles, a campaign staffer and LamontBlogger, is actually the guy who helped physically remove the heckler from the hall. Our staffer.

Keep the debate discussion going all night.

Update:  I just heard from someone who is THERE that the hecklers were hanging around outside after the debate with a LaRouche PAC banner.

The hecklers were not Lamont supporters, and were in fact removed with help from a Lamont staffer, Charles, of the official blog.

Update II:  Hat tip to MikeCT for pointing me to Genghis at CLP, confirming that the hecklers were LaRouche (NOT Lamont) supporters:

[A] group of LaRouche supporters started singing an insulting and loud song about Lieberman when the senator was speaking. The first happened during a routine answer to the question: the second during Lieberman's closing statement. All the candidates asked the hecklers to stop, and audience members started shouting for them to shut up.

Update III:  The first MSM report, from The Day:
The senator raised a finger to his lips to quiet the crowd, when a small clutch of people - who later said they were supporters of LaRouche - stood and began to sing to the senator, over the increasingly angry complaints of the rest of the crowd.

New Haven Independent Article (0.00 / 0)
The Lamont campaign staged a spirited parade, complete with floats and music, to usher the candidate to New London’s Garde Theatre for the debate. The marchers focused on the campaign finance issue.

The issue dominated the campaign news cycle Monday, as the Lamont campaign filed a complaint with the Federal Elections Commission (FEC) charging that the Lieberman camp had violated the law by listing close to $400,000 spent during the 12-day run-up to the Aug. 8 Democratic primary as unspecified “petty cash.”

Lamont defeated Lieberman, a three-term incumbent, in that primary by 4 percentage points. Lieberman took out petitions to run as a “Connecticut for Lieberman” Party candidate on Nov. 7.

The Lieberman campaign dismissed the Lamont charges as “desperate” moves by a candidate down 17 points in the polls two weeks before election day. The campaign also refused to specify how the money was spent.

“We are in full compliance with FEC laws,” said Lieberman spokeswoman Tammy Sun (pictured). “We’re not going to go beyond the law make the journals [showing details of how the money was spent] available just because Ned Lamont has crazy conspiracy theories about vote-buying and thuggery.”

Uh Oh.  Someone is hiding somthing...

Whats that in your hands tammy?

Absolutely wonderful (4.00 / 1)
when Ned stood up and said Lieberman called him a liar. I have not seen Lamont so fired up and his come back was great. Lieberman was a mess tonight. Cold, hecklers, whining. Alan was fun the first two debates but is beginning to wear thin. Ned rocked and won tonight.

Joe To Lamont after the debate: (4.00 / 2)
"You god dammed son-of-a-bitch"

Regarding the Direct mailers on the energy policy...

Whoa...Such a potty mouth moral joe...

Joe is cracking (4.00 / 2)
Here's the quote:

Evidently after the debate Lieberman walked up to Ned and said "You goddamn sonovabitch," and something to the effect of "how dare you run those direct mail pieces accusing me of voting for the energy bill in 2005 because of campaign contributions from the oil companies."  Joe's losing it.

And why Joe's angry about being exposed:

LIEBERMAN REWARDED FOR HIS "BIPARTISAN' ANTI-ENVIRONMENT VOTES WITH ENERGY INDUSTRY CASH: Lieberman has cashed in from his willingness to cast key votes against the environment. In the last year and a half alone, he has received more than $72,000 in corporate PAC contributions from the energy industry – that's almost $1,000 in energy PAC contributions per week since 2005. Since 2000, he's raked in more than $285,000 from the energy industry. ....  Meanwhile, Enron lobbyist Michael Lewan (also formerly Lieberman's chief of staff and a top fundraiser for John Rowland) continues to hold K Street fundraisers for Lieberman in Washington, D.C.

Interesting comment on the Channel 8 message board (4.00 / 1)
can anyone back this up?

Apparently the singers were paid Lieberman supporters from Pennsylvania wearing Lamont badges. They were confronted by genuine Lamont people after the show and refused to identify themselves but photographs from previous Lieberman events proved they were his people.

oh (4.00 / 1)
The people who disrupted the debate were LaRouch supporters. Very petty of Senator Lieberman to jump to the conclusion they had anything to do with Mr. Lamont. I think Mr. Lamont won this debate. He has won me over tonight.

Lets get a gaddamn press release out ASAP!

Speaking of audio... (0.00 / 0)
In these last 3 debates it has be attricious!

The soundmen(an?) have been asleep at the bored constantly.  At the WFSB debate, there was a constant hum/feedback.

No but I could tell (4.00 / 1)
from the look on Ned's face that Lieberman said something shocking.

further LaRouche confirmation (0.00 / 0)
Genghis confirms that they were LaRouche supporters:

The third way that Schlesinger made an impression was during the second disruption, during which a group of LaRouche supporters started singing an insulting and loud song about Lieberman when the senator was speaking.

whats that from? (0.00 / 0)

It makes total sense that it was Larouchies - (0.00 / 0)
One of the things that Larouche does in his cult (and it is run like a cult, though it is political rather than religious)is have his young culties sing a capella in groups.  Most of their time is spent out on the street trying to sell literature / get donations ("organizing" they call it.)  Any other time is spent in studying Larouche's works, studying Larouche's favorite mathematician (Riemann)and anything else that will fill up their time (and deprive them of sleep.)  You can bet they practiced their heckling song a lot before they got there!

[ Parent ]
Definitely supporters of LaRouche (0.00 / 0)
I was at the predebate rally and before they went in, there were about 8 to 10 of them singing while holding a banner declaring that Lynn Cheney and Lieberman were following in the footsteps of Himmler.  One of the singers was passing out literature; I accepted one and when I saw it was LaRouche, I said Holy Shit! LaRouche is still around?

I got home about 8:15 and when I heard the singing during Holy Joe's closing, I recognized the song as the LaRouche Vocal Society.

I missed the son of a bitch comment.  I will be looking forward to seeing the video online.  I hope Ned puts it in an ad.

CT Bob has video on the way (4.00 / 1)
And yet more confirmation from CT Bob, with a video on the way.

The singing that disrupted Joe's speeches was from the Lyndon LaRouche people, who are now standing in the lobby of the theatre, singing and holding a sign equating Bush and Lieberman with Goebbels and Himmler. Bob shot video and will have it up later.

full debate video (0.00 / 0)
WTNH has the full debate video online.  (If anyone can post a link to the direct Windows Media file, that would be helpful.  The javascript link isn't working in my browser.

Someone may want to delete that mess.

works! (0.00 / 0)
Thanks a lot!  That seems to work, once you get through the inexplicable weather forecast.  For some reason, my Mac browsers can never get through javascript TV video links, even though I have the right players.

[ Parent ]
Paul Bass video (0.00 / 0)
Paul Bass gets up some great video interviews with the candidates, exposing Schlesinger's nonsense about terrorist threats coming from Mexicans.  Lamont's answer is right on, and Schlesinger gets flustered.  Bass does need a better camera.  This is online journalism at its best.  Quick, public, and a unique angle that MSM would never pick up.

I dunno.. (0.00 / 0)
The Schlesinger one in particular is quite funky, like Alan is living in Dante's Inferno....

[ Parent ]
Literally a unique angle! (0.00 / 0)
Either Bass is 3'2" or he's holding his camera with his knees.

[ Parent ]
tparty the debate bouncer (0.00 / 0)
It was tparty who threw the LaRouchite out!  I was also wondering where the hell the security staff were.  The Lamont campaign needs to supply bouncers, too?  And they get blamed for it!  A comment on the campaign blog says Channel 3 reported that the hecklers were Lamont supporters.  I didn't seen it.

Some asshole LaRouchites stood up and interrupted the event midway through right in front of me, I physically "escorted" one of them out when security was nowhere to be found (and obviously, security at the place just took the night off, since they appeared again during the closeing statemnents).

I was at the rally before the debate as well and (0.00 / 0)
I saw the LaRouche supporters and one of them told me they had come all the way from MA.  They were doing the "singing thing" outside of the Garde, and it sounded exactly the same as what went on inside during the debate.

I'm not a reporter, but when I was at home later and heard the singing going on during the debate I immediately knew who the culprits were.  All it takes is being a bit involved in what was going on around you.

It seems to me that WFSB3 news took LIEberman's ass-u-mption and ran with it.  Too bad as once again LIEberman is wrong.

In a world of universal deceit, telling the truth is revolutionary. G. Orwell, "1984"

It was our own moral failure and not any accident of chance, that while preserving the appearance of the Republic we lost its reality. - Marcus Tullius Cicero, statesman, orator, writer (106-43 BC)
