Tom Swan Officially taking Leave of Absence from CCAG

by: Larkspur

Mon Feb 06, 2006 at 11:24:38 AM EST

( - promoted by BranfordBoy)

I got his letter from my CT NOW Exec Director...

Dear Friend,

I am writing to inform you that CCAG has granted me a leave of absence, effective today, to assist in running Ned Lamont’s primary challenge to Joe Lieberman.  John Murphy, our Political Director, will be joining me shortly.

I want to thank the CCAG Board and my co-workers for making this opportunity possible and express my confidence that the team (Judy Maslen, Acting Director, Phil Sherwood Legislative Director, Gretchen Vivier HealthCare for All Director, Rich Sivel, Lead Organizer, etc) that remains at CCAG will continue to make great headway on health care for all, restoring the public trust in our democracy, and in addressing high energy prices.  I urge your continued support for CCAG.

We are taking this leave because we believe that Ned Lamont’s potential candidacy for United States Senate presents a historical opportunity to challenge the status quo in Washington DC and to help turn Connecticut’s congressional delegation truly blue in 2006.  This is a race that can be won!!!

It is unacceptable to us that Nancy Johnson, Chris Shays, and Rob Simmons can hide behind Joe Lieberman to rationalize their support of George Bush’s war on Iraq.  Senator Lieberman’s recent vote for and against Samuel Alito’s appointment to the Supreme Court is another painful reminder of how Joe is no longer the fighting Attorney General that many of us remember.  On other issues like health care, trade, vouchers, social security, civil liberties, and energy, Joe continues to frustrate progressives in Connecticut, but our greatest frustration lies in his apologist behavior towards the Bush administration.

Ned is a progressive democrat who understands that the war in Iraq has made us and our allies less secure, who believes in an activist government that guarantees everyone a quality education and affordable health care, who is committed to equality and privacy, and who is also alarmed by the blatant disregard of our Constitution by the Bush administration.

John and I understand the mountain that a Ned Lamont campaign will have to climb to win on August 8th.  We are committed to working with Ned to build the largest volunteer campaign operation that Connecticut has ever seen.  As part of his deliberations, Ned has said that he needs at least 1,000 volunteers to sign up at his web page, (www.NedLamont.com) coming from every town and city in the state to formally become a candidate.  While we have made significant progress towards the numerical portion of our goal, there is still a significant way to go before we have people from all 169 of Connecticut’s towns.  We must build this volunteer base to overcome the money and the advantage that Lieberman has as a result of being an 18 year incumbent.

This campaign will must rely on grassroots and netroots participation to win.  We will need every hour anyone can volunteer, but we're also going to need people who can take on formal roles and responsibilities in their precincts, towns and regions. Our first task is to start going through the ranks of volunteers who have signed up so far to identify people who can commit to taking on these parts of the campaign.

If you haven’t please sign up today at www.NedLamont.com and, if you have, please ask your friends, family, and neighbors to join us in standing up to George Bush by electing Ned Lamont to the Senate.

Sincerely,

Tom Swan

P.S.: Thank you in advance for your participation in this historic race and for your continued support of CCAG.

Is Tom going to be the Campaign Manager? (0.00 / 0)
or Field Director. I heard talk that they might be bringing in an outsider. (Joe Trippi was mentioned.)

Me personally, I like Michael Whouley, the SOB who organized Iowa for Kerry.

When will the campaign be ready for contributions??

I heard the filings were done, and that we had reached our 1,000 CT volunteers.

I think Trippi's days as campaign manager are over (0.00 / 0)
I could see him as an advisor for the internet usage, but I think MoveOn.org would be better for that advice.

I'm not sure if a Dem Establishment guy like Michael Whouley would support an insurgent's run against the epitomy of Dem Establishment arrogance -- Joe Lieberman.  I don't know Whouley, but would find it hard to believe that anyone from the Kerry camp to support an insurgent run against an incumbant Dem senator.  But I could be wrong.

Well (0.00 / 0)
Trippi is serving as campaign manager (for now) for a Philadelphia mayoral candidate, Tom Knox.  link.  Primary isn't until 2007, however.

But in this state, because of the fall of Howard Dean's Prez campaign in IA (0.00 / 0)
if Ned hires Trippi as his campaign manager, Ned will be laughed out of the state.  Trippi will never live down that debacle.

It's best if Tom Swan is the campaign manager, taking advice and ideas from Trippi.  Trippi did do a superb job of helping Howard Dean rise form 8th place to frontrunner, but Trippi could not finish the job.  Anyway, Trippi is not from CT and Tom Swan is.

My suggestion, if Swan doesn't want the campaign manager role and they are looking for a progressive minded campaign manager, contact David Sirota http://www.davidsirota.com/ .  He used to be an aide for Bernie Sanders.  He now lives in Montana and is helping promote Gov. Schweitzer's victory plan as a model for Dems around the nation to use.  I don't think Sirota would want to be Ned's campaign manager, but he must know some progressive minded people who would or would at least help Tom Swan with the role.

Trippi still has credibility... (0.00 / 0)
he blew away every other candidate in terms of fundraising, and made a dark horse into a front-runner. If the Dem Party establishment coalesced behind Kerry, it wasn't Trippi's fault.

My belief is that Ned's credibility will come from his national fundraising. I hate horse-race politics, but the $$$ is often the news when given our lazy media.

And I don't like your Sirota suggestion. Anybody But Joe already has the thinking person's vote. What we don't need is anything ideological, (like Sirota). Instead, what is needed is a nasty sum-of-bitch who will pull out all the stops to topple Joe... (and don't worry, it's not like Lieberman is afraid of/will refrain from nasty politicking).

Finally, nothing against Tom Swan. He is awesome, and CT's finest. But why not bring in some people who have done something like this before? If things go right, money won't be a problem in this race!

This whole thing is bigger than you, or me, or anyone else involved. Ground zero for the Dem Party is here in CT in 2006. And I want to win, across the G-darned board. That means Lamont, the governership, Farrell, Courtney, and Murphy. Throw the bums out!

I didn't suggest hiring Sirota as campaign manager but asking him if (4.00 / 1)
he knew of anyone who is progressive minded and with experience to be Ned's campaign manager or who can advise Tom Swan about campaign management.  Sirota must have a network of contacts that he can mine for campaign manager candidates.

Trippi has credibility in raising funds over the internet, but not in winning the big races.  Raising the big bucks doesn't translate into winning primaries, just ask Howard Dean and Joe Trippi.

If Ned streaks to the front in $$$ over Lieberman, which I think he will, I expect the CT Dem Establishment to do for Lieberman what the national Dem Establishment did to Howard.  They already are trying to abort Ned's primary bid.  I saw it done at a small scale at my DTC meeting when some of my colleagues attacked me right after I said that I was organizing an open meeting for Ned Lamont.  My DTC Chair regurgitated what I know must be the CT Dem Party line -- primaries divert money away from more important races like Courtney's and the governorships.

Whether they succeed or not in aborting Ned's campaign is another story.  Most CT DTC's, I'm sure are like mine, they are divided over support for Lieberman and that helps Ned but it also makes for a turbulent campaign, which can hurt an insurgent.

Lieberman's popularity is on thin ice.  No one really likes him, but he's the incumbant and "sticking with the known" is a strong argument with 59% approval ratings among Democrats statewide.

Hiring Joe Trippi as campaign manager will be a feather in Lieberman's cap.  Lieberman will relentless remind every CT Dem that Trippi ran Howard Dean's campaign into defeat.  Trippi's reputation is still one of losing the big races and perception is a key component in an insurgent's campaign.

Just hire Trippi as an advisor on internet fundraising.  No one will deny that Trippi has talent in that area, but as campaign manager for a big race, hire someone else, someone who doesn't have a lot of name recognition but has experience and innovative ideas to challenge the system that favors the incumbant.

Campaign managers should not be celebrities among the public.  If they are, then they are eclipsing their candidate's name recognition and that's not good for an insurgent whom the public doesn't know.  Trippi is a celebrity in the political theatre and he would eclipse Ned's name recognition, and Trippi's reputation for losing the big races would be too big a negative to help Ned's budding campaign to overcome.  It would be like a ship taking a torpedo hit while still docked at the pier.

I've worked with Tom in the past and when he was going to be Ned's campaign manager (4.00 / 1)
I knew that Lamont must be someone who could really challenge Lieberman.  I see Ned as a "diamond in the rough" right now and hope that he gets better with Tom's help.

It will be a rough primary and I'm sure Lieberman will go dirty against Lamont.  I've already see the Lieberman supporters in my DTC throwing Weicker's support of Lamont in Lamont's face and they're angry that Lamont has the gall to primary Lieberman.  They insist that Lamont's bid to challenge Lieberman will spell Republican victory in November.  They totaly ignore the butt-kissing of Repukes that Lieberman does repeatedly.

I look forward to working with Tom again.

at the Windsor DTC,, one of the head honchos (0.00 / 0)
kept smearing him as "one of those Greenwich millionaires" in a non-too-subtle way. Wouldn't even refer to Ned by name.

The sad thing was that even with such a historic vote, Ned had no representation there. A little bit of campaign literature, and a couple of in-the-know supporters from the town, would have locked up more than several votes.

Help . . . . (0.00 / 0)
Does anyone have a caopy of hte Courant article that was favorable to Ned?  It's called:  It's Not Shaping Up To Be A Party For Lieberman.  It's not up on the Courant site anymore.  I need to send it to folks who are putting on a fundraiser fo him tomorrow.  Thanks!

Kim, check your e-mail (0.00 / 0)

ICONN.org (4.00 / 2)
Hi, Kim (and everyone else),

Just so you know, all Connecticut residents have access to the last fifteen years or so of the Hartford Courant through ICONN.org, which is the state library consortium's site. You just enter your library card number when there. Once in, click on "Link to Individual Databases" from the menu. A new window will open. You'll see the link to the modern Courant (there's a historical one, too) under "ICONN Newsstand." I was able to find the article by typing "Lamont" into the search field. Full text! Very useful. Whenever something is taken down from the Courant website, it's usually put up on ICONN.

Genghis,  thanks for the pointer to ICONN.  I didn't know about that great resource.  I've just spent a bit of time out playing with it.
