Obama To Headline JJB Dinner

by: BranfordBoy

Mon Jan 30, 2006 at 19:17:08 PM EST

Here's the press release from the state Dem HQ:

Hartford - The Connecticut Democratic State Central announced today
that Senator Barack Obama (D-Illinois) will act as keynote speaker for
their annual Jefferson Jackson Bailey fundraiser this year.  "Senator
Obama is one of the Democratic party's most dynamic and inspiring new
leaders and we are thrilled to have him coming to Connecticut to help
our party," said DiNardo.  She added,  "Barack Obama is a strong
advocate for working class families, our country's youth and our
seniors; he is a champion of civil rights and  a fervent promoter of
the ideals of the Democratic party.  Special thanks to Senator Joe
Lieberman for arranging Senator Obama's visit."

BranfordBoy :: Obama To Headline JJB Dinner
Barack Obama has dedicated his life to public service as a community
organizer, civil rights attorney, and leader in the Illinois state
Senate. Obama now continues his fight for working families following
his recent election to the United States Senate.

Sworn into office January 4, 2005, Senator Obama is focused on
promoting economic growth and bringing good paying jobs to Illinois.
Obama serves on the important Environment and Public Works Committee,
which oversees legislation and funding for the environment and public
works projects throughout the country, including the national
transportation bill. He also serves on the Veterans ' Affairs
Committee where he is focused on investigating the disability pay
discrepancies that have left thousands of Illinois veterans without
the benefits they earned. Senator Obama will also serve on the Foreign
Relations Committee.

During his seven years in the Illinois state Senate, Obama worked with
both Democrats and Republicans to help working families get ahead by
creating programs like the state Earned Income Tax Credit, which in
three years provided over $100 million in tax cuts to families across
the state. Obama also pushed through an expansion of early childhood
education, and after a number of inmates on death row were found
innocent, Senator Obama enlisted the support of law enforcement
officials to draft legislation requiring the videotaping of
interrogations and confessions in all capital cases.

Obama is especially proud of being a husband and father of two
daughters, Malia, 7 and Sasha, 4. Obama and his wife, Michelle,
married in 1992 and live on Chicago 's South Side where they attend
Trinity United Church of Christ.

Barack Obama was born on August 4th, 1961, in Hawaii to Barack Obama,
Sr. and Ann Dunham. Obama graduated from Columbia University in 1983,
and moved to Chicago in 1985 to work for a church-based group seeking
to improve living conditions in poor neighborhoods plagued with crime
and high unemployment. In 1991, Obama graduated from Harvard Law
School where he was the first African American editor of the Harvard
Law Review.

Newsletter Volume # 43

Dear Democrats:

Last week, our two United States Senators, Chris Dodd and Joe Lieberman stood firm in their resolve to keep a radical judicial nominee from pushing his conservative agenda from the bench of the United States Supreme Court.

By opposing Samuel Alito Senators Dodd and Lieberman are voting to protect the privacy of Americans afforded to them by the 1973 decision in Roe v. Wade; a decision that Judge Alito refuses to admit is settled law.

As a Supreme Court Justice, Judge Alito would give the President powers unchecked by either Congress or the courts, which is especially troubling in the wake of the Presidential wiretapping scandal.

Judge Alito has voted against provisions of the Family and Medical Leave Act that would make it harder for parents to care for their new children or family members who are sick.

Finally, Judge Alito has refused to recuse himself from cases in which he has had conflicts of interest; in the current climate of corruption in Washington such behavior is simply inexcusable and should be a disquieting point of concern to all Americans.

As State Party Chair, I applaud the courage of Senators Dodd and Lieberman and appreciate their determination to protect the people of Connecticut and the rest of our country from a judicial nominee who is outside the mainstream and out of touch with the principles of the American people.

Our priorities as Democrats are to protect America’s families by passing legislation and implementing policies that stimulate job creation, provide access to affordable healthcare and quality public education, and protect the homeland, while ensuring that our rights to privacy and our civil liberties are safeguarded.

By choosing Judge Alito to serve on the United States Supreme Court, George Bush and the Republican Party have, once again, demonstrated that they have the wrong priorities.

Please visit our website to see how you can help us win in November and bring the right priorities back to Washington, D.C. and our governor’s office.

Sincerely,

Nancy J. DiNardo

Chairwoman

LETTER TO THE EDITOR OF THE WEEK

Alito

“Judge Samuel Alito does not represent any form of the majority of the people of America. His memberships and his refusal to answer questions that he found inconvenient tell a story that is a lot bigger than we are seeing.”

Shays

“At a Jan. 14 Town Meeting, Congressman Christopher Shays, R-Bridgeport, tried to suggest that those of use who have questions about President Bush's wiretapping of private citizens are insufficiently concerned about the terrorist threat.”

NEWS CLIPS OF THE WEEK

GOP Facing Battles In Blues

“On paper, Republican election prospects in the Northeast this fall look bleak.”

Lieberman Says He'll Vote Against Alito

“Saying he has "profound doubts," Sen. Joseph I. Lieberman, D-Conn., will vote against confirming Judge Samuel A. Alito Jr. to the United State Supreme Court.”

Charge: Katrina Probe Stifled

“The White House has tried for months to stifle Congress' efforts to investigate the Bush administration's response to Hurricane Katrina, Sen. Joseph I. Lieberman said Tuesday - a charge that Republicans were quick to dispute.”

Criticizing Alito's Judicial Views, Dodd Says He'll Vote `No'

“Sen. Christopher J. Dodd Tuesday joined a growing group of Democrats and said he would vote against the nomination of Samuel A. Alito Jr. to the Supreme Court.”

Budget Bill An Embarrassment

“The conference bill, nearly 800 pages, was put forward after 1 a.m. A vote was called about four hours later. U.S. Rep. Rob Simmons said he didn't read the bill - how could he have in that time period, he asks. How indeed. Yet he voted for it because of the "reasonable expectation that there was some good in it" and because ‘that's the way it's done.’”

What do you want? (0.00 / 0)
That's the official newsletter of the Connecticut Democrats. Joe Lieberman is still the senator. She's not going to write,

"Panty-waist appeasenik Joe Lieberman (D) says he's going to vote against Altio, but we all know he's just poseur and will vote to end any filibuster that would threaten the nomination of his boyfriend's justice."

Not gonna happen.

Also... (0.00 / 0)
It went out this morning. After he was on record voting against Alito, before he voted or was on record for cloture.

JJB (4.00 / 1)
So how much does thing cost? I probably can't afford it. But maybe we can pool our money to send someone obnoxious enough to get thrown out.

Hah (0.00 / 0)
You're speaking my language.

LOL (4.00 / 1)
I got thrown out in 05 for passing out 'Kiss Buttons" and Anti-Joe Anti-war bumper stickersfrom John Ormans table we had arranged to work.Liebermans people complained and we were told the rule was no negative gear or literature about another Dem.
Reporters wanted the story but we decided to let it slide.

I was allowed to stand at the entrance with my sign that had this quote

"Bottom line,I think Bush got it right"
  Joe Lieberman

I passed out over 300 "Kiss Buttons"to people driving in who stopped and thanked me.John Edwards took a Dozen.

[ Parent ]
Lieberman won't dare attend the JJB... (0.00 / 0)
He hasn't since people protested him in 2003 and the start of the Iraq invasion.

Tickets cost something like $175. Meaning there won't be many average Democrats there.

I suggested to several of the State Party people that we do a low-dollar JJB. They laughed at me. The last thing DiNardo and company care about is building grass-roots level participation!

Well, I'm planning to go (4.00 / 1)
I seem to remember that it's about $150 a plate. Maybe we can pass the hat and have a MyLeftNutmeg table.

Heres a little story a birdie whispered in my ear last year (4.00 / 1)
Seems a certain Senator was upset his butt wasn't being kissed enough last year when http://www.dumpjoe.com/ was getting alot of press.

This certain senator was upset that noone in the party was coming out strongly to protect him.He decided the best way to get back at the Dem Party(state central in particular) was to threaten to tell 'His people" not to buy ads space in the Ad book...

Any questions on why this newsletter reads like it does?

We should ask DailyKos to purchase an ad in CT Dems ad book (4.00 / 1)
He can attack Lieberman in his "nuanced" way.

[ Parent ]
Hrm... this is interesting. (4.00 / 1)
Just got the JJB invitation via email. It says to make the checks out to "DSCC".

Please, in the name of all that's holy, tell me that that stands for Democratic State Central Committee. Because if it stands for Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee, and all the money the dinner brings in is heading out of state, I refuse to be held responsible for the consequences.

Its the State Committee (4.00 / 1)
This dinner pays for State Central For the Entire Year.

DSCC (4.00 / 1)
It is the State Party, just poorly named.

[ Parent ]
Looks like the CT JJB moved to Hartford (0.00 / 0)
Probably to encourage a strong showing from CT African American Dems.

JJB used to be held at the Aqua Club.

Low Ticket prices was like 75 (4.00 / 1)
Which when you figure in cost of food, party takes home maybe 50. I agree not so cheap but it is hard to do fundraising that much cheaper.

Anyone know? (0.00 / 0)
I seem to remember that setting the date for the State Convention was being held up in part at least because of an unresolved union issue at the Hartford Convention Center, the preferred venue.

Does the fact that the JJB dinner is being held there mean this dispute has been settled?
