I Don't Understand This

by: Maura

Fri Aug 04, 2006 at 01:55:59 AM EDT

I don't understand what the possible motivation from the Lieberman campaign could be for this, and this, and this, if it is true that paid campaign staffers participated in this contemptible behavior.

At the official campaign blog, Tim has some pictures to give a sense of what happened.

When I saw Tim's picture of the 90-year old World War II bomber who came from Virginia and wanted to talk to Ned to discuss his opposition to the Iraq War, I realized he seemed familiar.  Then I remembered:

This courageous, strong man marched in the blazing heat of a July 4 parade to show his opposition to the Iraq War and support for Democrat Jim Webb in his fight to unseat Senator George Allen in Virginia.

And how does this extraordinary elderly veteran get treated when he comes here to Connecticut?

Ned attempts to talk with a 90-year-old WWII veteran pilot from Virginia who wanted to discuss his opposition to the Iraq war. The Lieberman kids scream accusations about Ned's patriotism, spewing right-wing bile accusing him of not caring about our troops, and questioning whether he would (not verbatim) "let our citizens die again," assumedly a reference to 9/11.

I just don't understand what good can come from screaming at Ned Lamont while he's trying to talk to an elderly World War II B25 bomber veteran.  Did it win Joe a single vote?  Did it hype up support for Joe among his supporters?  Did it make Joe proud?  I can't believe the answer to any of these questions would be yes.  So what is the point?

If anything (0.00 / 0)
it may have cost him a few votes.

It's called D-E-S-P-E-R-A-T-I-O-N.

Joe looks horrible, depressed, angry and so do his supporters.  I'd suggest that someone should call the suicide watch on Joe and his supporters but I believe Bush cut funding for it.

Reprehensible (0.00 / 0)
This is the type of smack to the face I needed to see how low the Lieberman campaign is. I've always been honest of how I feel when I see either campaign doing something stupid, but this really takes the cake.

The Lamont campaign never asked any of us to go out and see Lieberman, and when we have, I've always seen Lamont supporters be very respectful. This seems like a deliberate and unprovoked attack not just done by Lieberman supporters, but by Lieberman staffers. One is just stupid. The other is despicable.

Social libertarian.

Has anyone called the Lieberman campaign? (0.00 / 0)
I might give them a call this morning to get their reaction, but I was wondering if anyone did that yesterday?

Where'd They Get Those Goons? (0.00 / 0)
What did they think they were gonna accomplish? There's been some discussion about the 'Rovian" aspect to the campaign of "Bush's Favorite Democrat", and this episode seems to bear it out. Why, they even used the tactic of exploiting the 9/11 psyop to call their opponent "soft on security"!

"If those in charge of our society...can dominate our ideas, they will be secure in their power. They will not need soldiers patrolling the streets. We will control ourselves." ~~Howard Zinn

Ambush at Ted’s

(cut off)...

Assistant and Meriden’s Democratic Party chairwoman. “It was supposed to be a laid-back event and (they) ruined it.” “We’re just using our right. We’re just exercising our rights to enjoy a burger,” said Lieberman supporter Alex Hoffman of Boston. Supporters of each candidate debated outside on the sidewalk while many Lieberman supporters continued to badger Lamont, who acknowledged most questions. Richard Goodstein, one of the most vocal Lieberman supporters, repeatedly shouted, “Are you a Bill Clinton Democrat or an Al Sharpton Democrat?” Lamont calmly said he supported both. The Rev. Al Sharpton was in the state Wednesday to campaign for Lamont alongside the Rev. Jesse Jackson, while Clinton visited last month on Lieberman’s behalf. Clips of Clinton’s endorsement speech have been used in the Lieberman campaign’s televised ads. “I think that between Bill Clinton and Al Sharpton, he is on the wrong side of that divide,”

“I’m disappointed with Joe Lieberman,” said Pat Reilly of Southington. “He was the first one to advocate going to war in Iraq, about a year before anyone else. They’re getting desperate because they’re behind in the polls and they’re going to lose if what the polls say is right.” The race for senator heated up in recent days with the latest Quinnipiac University poll revealing Lamont has surpassed the incumbent by 13 points. It was the first time the political novice has had a double- digit lead over the threeterm senator, the Associated Press reported. Earlier in the day, Lamont visited the Community Health Center on State Street, where he discussed health care options for small business owners and the uninsured.

At least the Lieberman campaign finally made the frontpage of a local newspaper, though for reasons other than they may have wished.

bring cameras (0.00 / 0)
to his events-I am willing to bet that the people Lieberman hired to disrupt the events won't want their pictures on the web

This was payback (0.00 / 0)
Lots of Ned supporters have dogged Lieberman on the trail with pointed questions.

The Kiss float seems to have a better track record for showing up at Lieberman events than the cronies he invites from Washington.

You can't expect to have that much fun disrupting his events without his supporters deciding to return the favor.

The Kiss Float Never Disrupted Anything (0.00 / 0)
We never yelled, heckled or interfered in any way - just kept a quiet and respectful distance.

When I went to protest Joe... (0.00 / 0)
I didn't say one word to him or disrupt his event.  I held a sign.  I chatted with the Kiss float driver and a couple other myleftnutmeggers, sweated my ass off, and went home.

[ Parent ]
how does (0.00 / 0)
Waiting to ask the sitting Senator a question match up with screaming in the face of the challenger?

How does yelling at the challenger match up with holding up signs behind the event?

How does pushing and shoving the challengers people match up with street theater (the float) being at the events?

One is peaceful, one isn't.

They are NOT the same. Had the Lieberyouth just sat there, or politly asked pointed questions, that would have been one thing. But what they did has NEVER been done to Lieberman at any event. Never has Lamont volunteers or staffers attended a Lieberman event with the intent to disrupt. And that is what happened here. Paid or volunteer staffers showed up and in a rehersed way interupted a Lamont event.

If this was a response to the float and the ned supporters going to Lieberman events, then it was "over the top".

The question is not what you are, we already determined that, we are now negotiating price.

It's all a matter of perspective and shades of gray. (0.00 / 0)
Do I think the Lieberyouth dialed things up?  Yes.

But so far, it appears to have been an isolated incident, and had he acted quickly, Joe could easily have passed it off as overly enthusiastic supporters who went overboard without his authority or permission by trying to "get even" for the Lamont supporters who have been protesting at his events for weeks.

He could have claimed the moral high ground by saying he's opposed to such tactics, and asked Ned to issue a similar statement asking his supporters to stop protesting at joementum events.

But so far, he doesn't seem to have done that, and it's a bit late to start that kind of response.

Also, it is kind of "funny" (0.00 / 0)
..that paid staffers (and lobbyists) can engage in such activities and not be called for it in the local media.

Makes one wonder....

Situational ethics is just another word for billshit ethics (0.00 / 0)
It's really simple.

A bunch of independent bloggers doing something is far different than paid staff or volunteers doing something. Even if all they did was exactly what Lamont supporters (bloggers) did it's different when it comes from people that are paid verses people that are not.

The fact is that the "leader" of this action was a DC lobbiest who has a history of doing "dirty tricks". No mater how you cut this, it is a simple case of attempted intimidation by a three term sitting incumbant millionaire senator against his competitor by the senators paid (and volunteer) out-of-state staff.

Spin the "shades of grey" any way you want, it is really black and white. There is right, and there is wrong. The actions of the Lieberyouth and the paid DC lobbiest-consultant weren't right. Period.

The question is not what you are, we already determined that, we are now negotiating price.

Richard Goodstein, innocent bystander? (0.00 / 0)
RICHARD GOODSTEIN, POLITICAL CONSULTANT: With three months having gone by since this whole matter arose, there is such a level of suspicion about him in connection with Chandra Levy and beyond, that there is a very strong bias against believing whatever he has to say.

What gets me (0.00 / 0)
Is that unveiling your shirts and just eating in peace would have been a great visual as Ned was in the restaurant (for the Lieberman campaign). But they acted like scum and brats, totally ruining any potential for a small pseudovictory. Idiots.

from the LA Times (0.00 / 0)
http://www.latimes.c...

At an afternoon visit to a diner in Meriden, Lamont shook hands with 90-year-old Marshall Jamison. The former Air Force lieutenant colonel had driven up from Virginia to offer Lamont assistance in the last days of his primary campaign. Jamison carried posters listing the names of troops killed in Iraq, and was handing them out.

"Why am I here? Because these men should still be alive," he said.

Lamont also met Richard Goodstein, a friend and supporter of Lieberman's who had waited in the diner for the chance to confront him. As Lamont greeted supporters, Goodstein loudly accused him of unfairly smearing Lieberman.

"I take this all very personally — A, because of my affection for Lieberman; and B, because of my commitment to the prospects of Democrats nationally," said Goodstein, 57, a lawyer.

"I think Ned Lamont has the potential to do grievous harm to the Democrats."

Friend? How about paid political consultant?
