LieberYouth attack Ned, staffers, reporter, and 92 year old WWII hero (with update)

Really, really classy, LieberYouth. What a bunch of putzes those paid College Republicans are! (Funny, they didn't try this stuff at the Bridgeport Baptist church meeting).

Aldon at Mydd.com and I have located Richard Goodstein, the Meriden heckler - He is a Washington lobbyist.

Sue :: LieberYouth attack Ned, staffers, reporter, and 92 year old WWII hero (with update)
Firedoglake.com:

Maura may be right, Lieberman may have a crack invisible ground team that nobody knows about, but it sure seems like signs of desperation and meltdown are appearing in Holy Joe's campaign.  Yesterday at the Wake Up WalMart event the paid LieberYouth staffers started crowding and heckling Ned when he talked (and I have to mention here, local bloggers who are Ned supporters who travel with the Kiss Float are universally polite to the Lieberman staff and actually on quite friendly terms at this point).

Pictures here:

(From the pictures, I'm sure that the 50 year old man in the Lamont blog  also approached me from the crowd at the Wakeup Walmart rally and tried very, very hard to convince me that Joe had returned the Walmart money. Seems he gets around. I'll trust Maura's judgement about that PAC donation).

Liberyouth gone wild

Oh man, the Lieberyouth have gone crazy.

So I just tracked this down with several sources, and something really strange is going on. Lieberman's campaign seems to arming his supporters with aggressive talking points in order to pick fights at Lamont events. There were two separate events today where this happened. At a Machinists union endorsement event for Ned, some Lieberman supporters (probably paid) started arguing with union members, and a sign got torn.

Later in the day, Ned was ambushed at a diner stop. At 5pm, Ned was scheduled to stop at a cheeseburger joint in Meridan (Ted's Cheeseburgers). The burgers were really good, apparently, and the place is famous for delicious cheeseburgers. Mmm. As I write this it's dinner time.

Anyway, Lamont was going to the restaurant for a scheduled stop to do a meet and greet. The field organizer got there 20 minutes ahead of schedule. A bunch of Lieberkidz were already inside, but they were disguised because they weren't wearing their standard white T-Shirts. They were just sitting in the booths, in the smallish restaurant.

There were about 15 Ned supporters outside, holding signs and milling about. There were also some reporters, a photographer, and a bunch of journalists. Ned arrived at 5:05, and spent about 10 or 15 minutes outside before heading in to give a speech and eat a cheeseburger. He goes inside, and all of sudden the field organizer who was behind Ned heard a lot of screaming directed at Ned.

There were only four booths and six stools in the whole place, and they were basically all occupied. When Ned went in, all of the supporters ripped off their 'civilian clothes' and revealed their Lieberman T-Shirts.

A large man, around 50 years old or so, then started screaming at Ned, "Are you an Al Sharpton Democrat, or a Bill Clinton Democrat?" Ned was trying to answer, and the gentleman kept yelling. The Lamont press secretary tried to intervene, and meanwhile, the people behind the counter who owned the restaurant were horrified and embarrassed.

The entire scene moves outside, where about 6 reporters are there, witnessing the entire spectacle. A near melee ensues as at least 5 of the Lieberman kids continue to yell and scream at Ned and get physically abusive with Lamont staffers, even bloodying a photographer's nose.

A Lamont supporter at the scene noted the Lieberman staffers looked "red in the face" with anger.

Ned attempts to talk with a 90-year-old WWII veteran pilot from Virginia who wanted to discuss his opposition to the Iraq war. The Lieberman kids scream accusations about Ned's patriotism, spewing right-wing bile accusing him of not caring about our troops, and questioning whether he would (not verbatim) "let our citizens die again," assumedly a reference to 9/11.

One reporter goes up and tries to ask some of these kids whether they are volunteers or paid staffers for the Lieberman campaign. The kid screams in response, "Let me see your credentials!" The reporter produces said credentials. The kid replies "those are fake." None of the 15-20 Lieberman kids there would admit to being paid staffers. Nor would they tell the reporters their names, or any other personal information.

Ned eventually escapes. In the meantime, the teenage Lieberman staffers continue to yell and scream at the Lamont supporters who had shown up just to have a cheeseburger with Ned. Ned returns about 10 minutes later, when things have calmed down.

It was disgusting.  Those rat-bastards! Only, Ned came back and got terrific coverage.  Joe Lieberman is a bastard and a loser.  Ned Lamont will win going away.  So long Joe Lieberman!  I can't say I shall shed one tear.  If there has ever been a senator in the history of any senate that has deserved to lose, you are it.

I read about this last night. (0.00 / 0)
Some are calling it, the Brook Brothers Republican Youth riot again,(Miami 2004). Disgusting. Maybe a more appropriate punishment would be to make them wear Wal-mart clothing for six months.

Ambush at Ted's (the Meriden Record-Journal) (0.00 / 0)

Meriden’s Democratic Party chairwoman. “It was supposed to be a laid-back event and (they) ruined it.” “We’re just using our right. We’re just exercising our rights to enjoy a burger,” said Lieberman supporter Alex Hoffman of Boston. Supporters of each candidate debated outside on the sidewalk while many Lieberman supporters continued to badger Lamont, who acknowledged most questions. Richard Goodstein, one of the most vocal Lieberman supporters, repeatedly shouted, “Are you a Bill Clinton Democrat or an Al Sharpton Democrat?” Lamont calmly said he supported both.

This Richard Goodstein? (0.00 / 0)
RICHARD GOODSTEIN, POLITICAL CONSULTANT: With three months having gone by since this whole matter arose, there is such a level of suspicion about him in connection with Chandra Levy and beyond, that there is a very strong bias against believing whatever he has to say.

not excusable but should be expected.
a desperate reaction will always be extreme.
that is how the ladder of conflict works.

cooler heads will prevail.

Bingo! Aldon at Mydd.com found him! (0.00 / 0)
http://www.nhianet.o...

Richard Goodstein is a Washington lawyer who has seen public policy issues unfold from many perspectives.  Mr. Goodstein graduated from Wesleyan University with honors in 1974 and from Georgetown University Law Center magna cum laudein 1978.  By that time he had already worked for United States Senators Abraham Ribicoff and Hubert Humphrey.  Mr. Goodstein then clerked for Judge William B. Bryant, Chief Judge of the United States District Court for the District of Columbia.

Another Perspective (4.00 / 3)
From a local town chair:

"Early this evening--or late this afternoon--I joined a group (maybe 20--didn't count) of Lamont supporters and staff on an outing to a local, apparently well-known, Meriden eatery, Ted's, for their specialty, steamed cheeseburgers. Ned was slated to be interviewed there by Mark Davis of Channel 8 TV live for the 6 PM news. A group of us got there a bit before 5 and did visibility--sign waving, to a constant stream of honked car horns, thumbs up, and high fives. (Only one car I saw gave us the finger.) Ned showed up maybe a bit after 5.

Our group, aside from a few college-age interns, was made up of adults, some more senior in the political pecking order: a state representative, the Meriden Democratic Town Chair, me (Democratic State Central Committee - DSCC and a town chair), later joined by a state senator, some union officials, a few local firefighters, a member of the local board of education, some volunteers probably in their 40s through 60s, and a 90-year-old retired AF colonel/PhD who came up from Virginia carrying a list of the 2580+ American dead from the Iraq war.

Unbeknownst to us, as we were outside, Ted's, which is a very small place with 3 booths and probably 8-10 counter stools, was full of what the counterman thought were college students, mainly male. As soon as Ned got there, these kids quickly changed into Lieberman T-shirts and accosted Ned as he entered the restaurant and, apparently, started badgering him with foolish questions. They then swarmed out of the restaurant and we, with our Lamont signs, ended up in a faceoff with these kids. I would figure the kids were maybe high school seniors, with a few, at most, maybe college age. They were mainly white, mainly male, and, according to what one of the few young women in the group had said to our people, only she was a volunteer. In other words, they were Lieberman's $60/day paid "volunteers." They were rude, obnoxious, and ignorant. One young man started saying that he was going to Baghdad in five years to be a diplomat.

I quickly realized that they were just a rabble, sent to disrupt Ned's event. (I suspect the instructions given on the van, to hype up their testosterone levels, were, "Your team is better, stronger, faster, and you're going to play the game of your lives against the evil team from Lamontland."  Sorry, couldn't resist.) It could have gotten nasty--I guess there were about 20 of them, with one male adult, who was busy pontificating to some reporter about Joe's wonderful qualities. One young Lamont intern said he was jostled. A female Lamont volunteer, probably right age to be their mother, tried to talk to them.  They were unknowledgeable and it was a waste of time. Their role there was to disrupt Ned's event. They said they had Ned's schedule.

Ned and his driver left. The kids hung around for a while longer, and remained hostile and continued their ignorant banter. And then they drifted away.

The Lamont supporters hung out and Ned came back and had his interview with the TV news, uninterrupted by this would-be band of hooligans.

I overheard a reporter from GQ, who said he was trying to get a statement from Lieberman's spokesperson, Marion Steinfels, about what the campaign was trying to achieve with their little ploy. He said that Steinfels couldn't give him an answer.

What they did achieve was that they convinced both the counterman and the waitress at the restaurant that they will vote for Lamont and they told everyone who came in not to vote for Lieberman and why. One of the men with Lamont turned to me during this encounter with these kids and said, "I used to have a little bit of sympathy for Joe, but not anymore."

In the midst of this, I called the exec director of the DSCC and demanded that he call the Lieberman campaign because as a member of the DSCC, I was mortified that our designated candidate, let alone a three-term U.S. Senator, was running such a nasty campaign. He said he would do it for me.

I was pretty exercised. If this were my kid, he would have his allowance clipped, maybe for good. Looking at these kids, I would say that they are middle class, coddled kids, probably about as likely to volunteer for a military tour of duty in Iraq as my cat is. (Well, in fact, the military tried to recruit two of my cats, but that's another story.) Anyway, Mommy and Daddy should be ashamed. I wonder where they come from. I got a call from a military brat out of Fla., female, age 20, and who seemed to think that war was OK and that she could help the wounded, asking me to help Lieberman. The kids yesterday told some of Lamont’s people that they were from New Haven and other CT towns; but they were not from Meriden."
