Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton to Campaign for Ned Lamont

by: Maura

Mon Jul 31, 2006 at 19:26:46 PM EDT

Amid a growing rumble about a nasty whispering campaign about Ned Lamont that someone has been trying to start in the African-American community, coupled by the Lieberman campaign putting flyers on windshields in urban areas around the state suggesting that Ned Lamont is a racist (see ConnecticutBLOG's take on this), I suspect the Lieberman campaign will be crushed to hear of these two events:

Rev. Jesse Jackson and Rev. Al Sharpton to Campaign With Ned Lamont in Bridgeport
Mount Avery Baptist Church (Bridgeport, CT)
73 Frank Street
Bridgeport, CT 06604
Wednesday 6:30 PM

Rev. Jesse Jackson and Rev. Al Sharpton to Campaign With Ned Lamont in New Haven
Mount Bethel AME (New Haven, CT)
255 Goffe Street
New Haven, CT 06511
Wednesday, 8:00 PM

A smear campaign like Lieberman's assumes that everyone in the African-American community is one of Sean Smith's "low information voters".  The Lieberman campaign assumes people will just be sheep and believe outrageous lies without checking themselves to find the facts.  This kind of campaigning is demeaning to everyone.  I fervently hope that Revs. Jackson and Sharpton will greet this type of campaigning with all of the scorn, disdain, and righteous condemnation it deserves.

Sharpton is no stranger to smear. (0.00 / 0)
Ask Steven Pagones.

Jesse Jackson is hardly a saint either, but I'd probably be wasting everybody's time to be linking to his attempts at extortion from local black leaders as well as using charity funds to keep an affair and his bastard child out of the limelight. Much like Lieberman, this was a man who I could have respected at least a decade ago (maybe), but certainly not today.

Although I doubt Lamont will be stupid enough to keep on saying "Amen Brother," which is a small plus.

Social libertarian.

Let's Focus on The Positive (0.00 / 0)
The key to this election may be in the African-American community. Millionaire Joe LIEberman's campaign  is reduced to attempting to smear Ned with lies. He has no credibilty in the community at all. They know what a disaster his re-organization plan, creating the Department of Homeland Security, was for FEMA, and his endorsing  FEMA's incompetent Michael Brown was one of the major causes of the lack of Katrina response in New Orleans.

They also know that members of their community are dying in Iraq. They know who is shoring up Bush's idiotic war and the administration's total disregard for civil rights.

Jesse Jackson, Al Sharpton and Maxine Waters know who is the real Democrat in this race, and they are doing their best to support him. Let's be grateful for their help, and do all we can to get out the vote for Ned one week from tomorrow!

Al and Jesse should help in the black community (4.00 / 1)
Of course, they will only get a small fraction of the coverage that former pres Clinton got on his trip to CT to boost Joe's campaign.

The massive free publicity that Joe received from that visit was probably worth a million bucks. And it probably made this race even. Let's not forget that Joe has raise three to four times more money than Ned.

I worked at a Lamont phone bank for about four hours today--calling seniors and asking who they were planning to vote for. I probably made about 300 attempted calls. There is either and answering machine (most often) or no anwer on about 75 percent of the calls.

Based on those people who actually answered, my impressions was that the race if up for grabs. Probably, the campaign who does the most work will win.  Everyone of us who wants to be represented by a more progressive Senator really needs to contribute their time (and money) to this important effort. I would be criminal to let this oportunity pass.

I totally agree (0.00 / 0)
The race is absolutely up for grabs, and whoever can make the most calls, contact the most voters, and get the most votes to the polls wins.

Millionaire lawyer Joe Lieberman's campaign is getting more than 100,000 of corporate executive/corporate lobbyist money every day to pay for their 4,000 "volunteer" canvassers.

We CANNOT rest this week.  We can enjoy a quiet evening on August 9.

New York Times also had an article (0.00 / 0)
Don't forget about DeStefano (0.00 / 0)
DeStefano is also being endorsed by these two fine gentlemen.

why? (0.00 / 0)
why would they endorse destefano.... weird. Malloy seems the better candidate with a better record of working with his communities (be they black, white, hispanic, etc.) Seems a atrange move to me.
