Priceless (0.00 / 0)
Even Steven is still stuck on the "one issue" thing, but I'll give him a pass.

The last word made the whole thing.  Conservative doublespeak in a nutshell.

For the tech challenged -- THE TRANSCRIPT (4.00 / 1)
Via middleagedhousewife at Daily Kos, the Colbert/Lieberman transcript:

http://www.dailykos.com/story/2006/7/14/124127/695

"I saw this commercial.  It's a great ad featuring my favorite Democrat, Senator Joe Lieberman.  Something about the ad really made him seem presidential [Lamont ad where Lieberman morphs in to Pres. Bush].  It turns out I was wrong.  It was an ad for Lieberman's opponent in the Democratic primary:  some angry, leftist, millionaire cable executive named Ned Lamont. And this Lamont person has undertaken a vicious attack on Lieberman's character that I'd call blatantly partisan, were they not in the same party.

What's Ned's problem with Senator Lieberman?  One tiny, insignificant issue:  the war in Iraq.  Lieberman supports the President, and the President has supported Lieberman right back [The Kiss!].  You know, Mr. Bush has such soft hands, I can only imagine what his lips are like.

Evidently, low approval ratings can be contracted through saliva, because Lieberman now could actually lose the Democratic primary in August.  Well, when I look for analysis of internal Democratic party politics, I go straight to conservative columnist David Brooks.

Here's his take on the Lieberman-Lamont race.  Quote "what's happening to Lieberman can only be described as a Liberal inquisition."  He's right.  It is the only word that could possibly describe it, and therefore, it's tonight's word.

INQUISITION
Folks, incumbent senators win back their seats 80% of the time [20% of the time have sex scandals]; and they're almost never challenged in the primaries.  So listen up Connecticut Democrats -- you made your choice back in 1988.  You chose Joe Lieberman [and acid wash jeans].

You don't get to have another primary 18 years later.  You can't just say "oops, I made a mistake." [Apparently, neither can Lieberman]. You know, you may not agree with some or all of his positions, but you have to wait until a Republican beats Lieberman, and then 6 or 12 or 18 years later, you can elect a totally different Democrat [Davey Lieberman in '24!].

Joe Lieberman still has a lot to offer [To Republicans].  He's a major political figure on the national stage.  He was the Democratic Vice Presidential national candidate [An inconvenient truth].  He was on the 2000 ticket and in 2004, he made an impressive showing in New Hampshire [Lieberman: we are in a three way split decision for 3rd place].  You cannot stop Joementum!

This is a man who was tied with other men who almost got nominated to lose the general election, and now Democrats are going to just kick him to the curb? [At the corner of Bland and Adequate] Well folks, if a jihad like this can happen to Joe Lieberman, it can happen to any Democrat [who tongues the President].

And if it does happen to Lieberman, soon you'll have members of Congress from all over the country facing primaries, having to defend their records.  And folks, there's only one word for that:  Inquisition [Democracy]."

see Colbert doesn't just hammer the GOP (0.00 / 0)
he hammers Democrats that act like the GOP

The question is not what you are, we already determined that, we are now negotiating price.

Audience reaction... (0.00 / 0)
I audience reaction interesting. It was universally muted. Either people don't know about Lamont ('s fine, national show) or think it's rude to cheer him in "mixed company." The best audience reaction came from Joe's three-way-tie-for-third, clip.

Colbert hits it on the head, though. And I can say that because each of us has pretty much been saying the same things. ;)

Ring the bells that still can ring. Forget your perfect offering. - L. Cohen

Disagree (0.00 / 0)
The piece was so audacious many people did a "Ohmigod, did he just say that?" with some of Colbert's remarks, or the video of The Kiss, or Lieberman's inane New Hampshire speech. Most would never have seen any of that before. Many were left stunned. According to the Colbert blogs a lot of people stood and cheered afterward.

Far superior to Stewart's bit (4.00 / 1)
The Daily Show tried to link Lamont to "a Jonestown vibe," which didn't really work. It was interesting to me how close that joke was to Lieberman campaign (and therefore right wing) talking points: anti-Joe forces are a crazed cult.

OTOH, "Another Bleach Drinker For Lamont" would make a nice t-shirt.

I'd have liked to have gotten (0.00 / 0)
..the intro segment where Colbert says something about Lieberman being challenged by a real Democrat. :-/

Missed it though.

Here's Colbert opening statement... (0.00 / 0)
“Tonight Joe Lieberman faces a tough challenger in the Democratic primary, an opponent who’s actually a Democrat!”

It was obvious Colbert did his homework --- kudos to him and his staff!!!

Outstanding clip (0.00 / 0)
Stephen Colbert has really found his stride. His show just gets better and better.

Maybe, the Lamont campaign staff should find a way to get Ned on the Colbert Report!

I'd settle for what we saw last night (0.00 / 0)
With that kind of snark, we don't really need to see Ned on the CR.  He can't possibly top it.

Genius. (4.00 / 1)
Who know bad poll ratings were transmitted by saliva? Aparently, so is the neocon virus. Sounds like we could use some "abstinence only" education for Joementum.

"I think the economic logic behind dumping a load of toxic waste in the lowest wage country is impeccable and we should face up to it."

-Lawrence Summers
