Dodd: "I am not happy until you are unhappy"

by: Scarce

Thu Jul 13, 2006 at 09:14:31 AM EDT

Chris Dodd (D-CT) does his best Foghorn Leghorn impression on Imus yesterady. Some serious rationaliztion went into his answer so I advise reading it at least twice. Harold Ford Jr. (D-Tenn) was asked the simple question before Dodd and wouldn't answer it either.

Joe Lieberman (D?-CT) was on this morning, with reports that his views on Iraq are softening. Right...

Imus speaks with Senator Chris Dodd (D) CT about his colleague Joe Lieberman's run for re-election:

Imus: "Sen. Lieberman...did you see that debate?"

Sen. Chris Dodd: "I did. Absolutely. Joe did a great job, a terrific job. Yep and your endorsement and support of him has been a guarantee of a big victory on August 8th. We are counting on it. As long as you stick with him now. We hope you are going to stick with him."

Imus: "No, no, I'm going to stick with him. I don't agree with his idiotic position on the war but that is not a reason to vote somebody like Joe Lieberman out of the United States Senate in my view."

Sen. Dodd: "I agree with you. I agree with you."

Imus: "I wonder what happens if he doesn't win this Democratic primary."

Sen. Dodd: "I'm shocked that you are asking me that question. I can't imagine why you'd ask me that question. Harold Ford Jr. did a great job by the way."

Scarce :: Dodd: "I am not happy until you are unhappy"
Imus: "By not answering the question."

Sen. Dodd: "Yeah, well, well he did a good job. Bill Richardson will do as good a job when he comes up at 8:30. Now let me tell you what people are doing obviously this is a big question..first of all it's complicated by the fact that you've got to have to have these signatures done by the day after the primary in Connecticut, August 9th which has this created the problem more than anything else so had there been more time after the primary then it might have been a different story. I believe that taking a position for or against what happens after August 8th actually hurts Joe and in fact I think he'll make this case to you in some ways tomorrow. If you make the case that you are going to be for the Democratic nominee and some have done this already, I think it practically undermines Joe's ability to win that primary on August 8th. If you take the position that you are going to be for Joe no matter what happens then a lot of people may not show up to vote on August 8th and that will cost Joe the nomination in my view. Because he needs the turnout better than two or three percent is what you have in Virginia. So the right response here even though your motto is, you are not happy until we are unhappy..."

Imus: "No, I'm not happy until you are not happy."

Sen. Dodd: "Exactly, I agree. My view is I am not happy until you are unhappy and all of this that it's better just to probably wait after the primary on August 8th to make a decision like that if you are interested in seeing Joe get re-nominated, I am, I am going to be working very hard, have been over the last number of weeks for him. I think he is not only the strongest candidate, he's been a good Senator, he's been terrific for our country and the state and I hope the people in Connecticut, Democrats, six hundred and fifty thousand of them, a good percentage of them will come out. It's unique, almost unique to have a primary on August 8th, but with the notoriety and notice around the race, I think it's a good chance that we'll get a good turnout. If we do I think Joe has a very good chance of winning this. It will be close but I think he wins it."

Chris, Chris, Chris.. (0.00 / 0)
Not that I thought you'd have a snowball's chance in hell of the presidency but now we Connecticut Dems won't listen to your idea even for 5 seconds.

Next up, Dodd for Rell? (0.00 / 0)
Dodd for Simmons?

Dodd for Shays?

Dodd for Johnson?

Priceless. Absolutely priceless.

If you make the case that you are going to be for the Democratic nominee and some have done this already, I think it practically undermines Joe's ability to win that primary on August 8th.

Guh? (4.00 / 1)
There are a lot of words there that mean diddly squat.

Social libertarian.

Presidential Timber? (4.00 / 1)
Chris needs to stay away until August 9th.  The closer he gets to Lieberman the less likely he will ever to get to run for president.

I think it is clear after the the Lieberman nomination for VP, Democrats are going to make loyalty to the party a key issue for any candidate.  If Chris Dodd does not support the democratic nominee he would be committing political suicide.

As an aside, this whole process with the primary has made what few choices we have had in CT for the last 20 years.  Its clear we may need a whole new set of candidates for Senate and Congress.  A lot of the incumbents just don't get it.

Dodd will support the Democrat (0.00 / 0)
...but he'll go through an agonizing, Oscar-worthy performance of the pain he had to go through to in reaching his decision of not supporting a longtime colleague yadda yadda yadda..

All of which was completely unnecessary.

He was simply afraid of the soundbite:

Will you support Ned Lamont if...

Chris has been "working very hard" (0.00 / 0)
for Joe? Really? Where? Anyone get a phone call? Anyone seen a commercial, a la DeLauro's for DeStefano? Personal appearances with/for Joe? When's the last time anyone's even SEEN Dodd in the state?

He's hiding under a rock until August 8, that's what he's doing. Working very hard for Joe, my ass.

He's working very hard NOT to be seen with Joe, yet say he's for Joe (0.00 / 0)
The stress must be killing him. [end sarcasm]

Chriss Dodd's Presidential run while backing Joe's 3rd Party (0.00 / 0)
As you all know Chris Dodd is sticking with Joementum even if Joe runs his 3rd party candidacy. Also Dodd is running for the Democratic  endoresement for the Presidency in 2008..why should any good progressive support Dodd if he is willing to support a traitor like Joe who wont be loyal to the Party. Furthermore Dodd's judgement that Joementum won the debate is ridiculous...most pollster's rightly give the debate to Lamont...If Dodd keeps smoking that shit he will lose all credibility.

Actually, (0.00 / 0)
Dodd has NOT said he'd endorse an independent bid by Lieberman. He's doing the "we'll cross that bridge if we come to it; and hopefully we won't come to it" routine.

Where? (0.00 / 0)
As you all know Chris Dodd is sticking with Joementum even if Joe runs his 3rd party candidacy

Can you please show me a link where this is said. I have heard nothing of the sort. I want proof.

What great representation (0.00 / 0)
"...So the right response here even though your motto is, you are not happy until we are unhappy..."

Imus: "No, I'm not happy until you are not happy."

Sen. Dodd: "Exactly, I agree. My view is I am not happy until you are unhappy...

WTF? Dodd won't be happy until the rest of us are unhappy?  Or is he just referring to Imus?

What a great stance for a public servant to take!

IRONY, with a capital I (as in Independent Democrat?) (0.00 / 0)
What's most nauseating about this is the thought that Lieberman got his political Bona Fides working for Joe Duffy, who was able to unseat Tom Dodd (yep, Chris' dad) running as an ANTI-WAR Democrat.  And not a single mention of this or question about it in any Dodd interviews.

So much for the Liberal Media bias.
