Joementum: Lieberman comes in third in debate!!!

by: Maura

Thu Jul 06, 2006 at 21:52:54 PM EDT

Joe Lieberman demonstrated how completely disconnected with reality he was back in 2004 when he declared that he tied for third in the New Hampshire Democratic primary when he really came in fifth.

The official statement from the Lieberman camp about tonight's debate is just as disconnected with reality:

Lieberman's Campaign Communications Director Marion Steinfels said,"you saw the real Joe Lieberman tonight. He is a principled Democrat with the courage of his convictions. You saw the real Ned Lamont tonight. The central premise of his campaign collapsed as he waffled yet again on Iraq and couldn't answer why he agreed with Republicans 80 percent of the time when he was in elected office. The contrast was crystal clear. A principled fighter won the debate against an inconsistent and inexperienced challenger."

Whatever!  I'll concede third place to you this time, Boltin' Joe.  And I'll throw in a five dollar bet that you'll be picking up those petitions by this time next week.

UPDATE: Matt Stoller in Hartford has started to expose Lieberman's lies about privatization of social security and his support for an open-ended commitment in Iraq.  Hope local journalists have picked up on the same dishonesty already.

Hat tip on the Lieberman statement to Genghis Conn at CLP.

Lies Lies Lies

You saw the real Ned Lamont tonight. The central premise of his campaign collapsed as he waffled yet again on Iraq and couldn't answer why he agreed with Republicans 80 percent of the time when he was in elected office.

Loserman definitly came in third, behind Joanne Nesti, although she did falter there, when she passed on reigning in the Senator's filibusters.

My favorite line (0.00 / 0)
A lot of people loved the "Fox News" line, but my favorite was when Ned said that he compromised with Republicans over issues related to potholes but Lieberman compromised with Republicans over issues of principle.

STUNNINGLY bad coverage by NBC-30 (0.00 / 0)
Wow.  I am honestly STUNNED by the skewed coverage by NBC-30 just now.

If you go to NBC-30's web site, you'll see that 80% of viewers who voted thought that Ned won.  They mentioned the poll but never mentioned the results.

If you read their discussion forum related to the debate, more than 70% of the commenters said that Ned won.

The VAST majority of the comments focused on how angry and rude Lieberman was.  More than anything people mentioned how Lieberman interrupted, broke debate rules, and was angry.

The four comments that NBC-30 chose to share mentioned NOTHING about this.  Two were pro-Ned and two were pro-Joe and they were mostly bland, though one was long and focused on Joe's integrity.

They essentially completely ignored the whole DYNAMIC between the two candidates.

I'm used to the media skewing reality, but I have to admit that I'm really stunned by the disconnect between what happened and what was just reported by NBC-30.

maura, the NATIONAL msnbc website is EVEN WORSE than the local channel 30 one! even though their poll says mr lamont won the debate by 78% the headline screams "lieberman comes out fighting" etc etc etc. as if the liebs actually WON

it's a disgrace!

be safe be well dream in colors. an' it harm none, do as you will

I'll agree on one point (4.00 / 3)
"you saw the real Joe Lieberman tonight.

Yep. A nasty, petty, mudslinging, DC-insider who has *no* respect for the grassroots. Thanks for showing us that.

Great Job Ned! Views from the other end of the universe (0.00 / 0)
I'm so proud of Ned!  Great job!

I had been directed by a collegue at work to the Wooden Tap in Hartford to watch the debate.  When I got there I was not happy to find a roomful of Lieberman supporters watching the debate ... not Lamont supporters.  However, I took the opportunity to see what resonated there with them.  While it was very hard to hear, I found that there were a few things that brought cheers from this crowd.

First:  When Joe went shrilly negative with long run-on sentences, they responded very favorably.  It seemed almost like the attack is what brought on the cheers ... and not the words or message.

Second:  They responed very positively to Joe's linking the "war" and the "terrorist" threat.  In my opinion, "We are fighting 'them' over there so that 'they' can learn tactics over there."

Third:  Joe said several times that he saved 31,000 jobs at the Sub Base and this was a real hit among the crowd.  (I kept wanting to know why they prefered a sub base rather than supporting 31,000 jobs for UConn, Community colleges and public schools.)

Fourth: The biggest howl was when Joe asked about Ned's tax returns and Ned responded obliquely to the question ... then changed the subject ...  then returned to say that he wasn't going to be beholden to special interests in Washington.  They sneered that he didn't answer the question.

I don't recall any other specifics.  The food looked great and no expen$e had been spared ... but I didn't feel like a welcome guest and left immediately afterwards without sampling.

For those of you with strong stomachs and a desire to see what the opposite end of the universe is saying, this is the Free Republic's blog about the debate (I think the 'Free Republic' has something to do with being 'free' of any concience or any compassion.)

I'm temporarily in another country... (0.00 / 0)
...and can't get the video to download, so I've only read the transcript.

From the transcript, it seems that rhetorically, Lieberman had the upper hand on Lamont. This is a first impression. Lieberman conveys the idea that being a Senator is a more nuanced job than Lamont paints it to be, that Lamont does not understand what the climate in Washington is like.

I think this is an important point. Nonetheless, it is not an excuse for centrism. I wish that Lamont had better hit the point home that he has made in the past: that you do not need to be a centrist to be bipartisan or work with opposing voices. Too often we seem to confuse the two in America... or at least the Democrats seem to confuse the two. And the center keeps shifting right.

And I absolutely agree that Ned should not have called Lieberman "Senator". "Joe" would have been just fine. After all, Joe calls himself Joe all the time (e.g. his "cup of Joe" meetings)

the debate (0.00 / 0)
if you go to both the local nbc 30 website and the national msnbc website, ned lamont was the OVERWHELMING (81% local, 78% national) favorite of poll voters (as of 4 am). this news makes my heart SING with joy and HOPE. i cannot wait until the primary!

Academic commentary & Bush keeps quiet for Joe (0.00 / 0)
From the CT Post:

Political observers said Lamont held his own against Lieberman and despite being wide-eyed and apparently uncomfortable in the glare of TV lights, the challenger may have even won the debate and narrowed Lieberman's lead in the polls.
....
Gary L. Rose, chairman of the Department of Government and Politics at Sacred Heart University, said the debate might have been the best he's ever seen. Speaking right after the event, Rose said Lamont was the apparent winner.

Scott McLean, chairman of the political science department at Quinnipiac University said that while Lieberman might have used his experience to win the encounter, Lamont "went toe-to-toe" with the incumbent in a performance that's bound to encourage his supporters and narrow Lieberman's lead in the count down to the Aug. 8 primary.

At the end of the WTNH story (second video), Larry King interviews George Bush, who is afraid to publicly endorse Lieberman's independent bid, for fear of hurting Lieberman!

King: I know you like him.

Bush: You're trying to get me to give him a political kiss, which may be his death.

Note that Bush doesn't even wish the official Republican nominee well.

In Politics (4.00 / 1)
Giving the underdog a chance to build name recognition and giving them face time in a televised debate is an act of desperation.

Ned pulled even with Lieberman just by showing up for the debate. Ned took the lead by simply going toe-to-toe for the length.

Now Lieberman has to deal with a Ned Lamont who isn't intimidated by him, the tv cameras or the glare of the light.

Lieberman is using this kind of exposure to hold his base - the uninformed Republican ultra-conservative. Lieberman is ceding the primary with the hope of pulling "something" out in November. One small problem with this is that his ultra-conservatives here in Connecticut don't control the vote count. This isn't Ohio or Florida or Georgia...

The Lieberman strategy is becoming more and more transparent every day. Lieberman is becoming invisible.

MAURA Wakes Up To The New NEOCON Reality!! (0.00 / 0)
"I'm used to the media skewing reality, but I have to admit that I'm really stunned by the disconnect between what happened and what was just reported by NBC-30."

Yes, it's disgusting. Here on this blog we have a handful of thinkers who know where it's at, but- the vast majority will form their opinions from what they saw on NBC-30. This is a serious problem for the "Good Guys". Frustrating isn't it? Try spreading the truth about 9/11- this is nothing compared to what I go through with that work...

I just found this on Yahoo News-

"The president who loves to get home to his own bed is planning more nights on the road. It's part of a public-relations effort aimed at boosting President Bush's low standing in polls and bolstering the chances of the Republican Party he leads in this fall's midterm elections."

"I'm doing a lot of campaigning," Bush told CNN's Larry King during an interview aired Thursday night. "We're going to do just fine in '06."

"We're going to mix it up," said White House press secretary Tony Snow.

See what's happening here??? "We're going to do just fine in '06.", they say, and will keep repeating it ad nauseum, and their MSM will pass it along to the masses. Right out of Dr. Goebbels playbook.

And that's why the Lieberman campaign put out the above Statement on the Debate- looks like they get their strategy orders straight from the WH. Democrat, eh? Anyone know what Fox is saying (that's where Tony Snow blew in from)? Why does it have to be so difficult?

"If those in charge of our society...can dominate our ideas, they will be secure in their power. They will not need soldiers patrolling the streets. We will control ourselves." ~~Howard Zinn
