Lieberman Will Petition

by: BranfordBoy

Mon Jul 03, 2006 at 12:49:30 PM EDT

Joseph Lieberman will announce at his 1 pm news conference that he will pull petitions to begin gathering signatures for an independent run.

Furthermore, he will announce his intention to stay in the primary, but bolt the party if he loses.

No surprise to many of us. Joe is desperate to cling to power and the voters of his own Party be damned.

UPDATE:

Confirmation from the Courant.

More from CNN.

I can't stop smiling.

No Comment from Rosa's Office (0.00 / 0)
A call to Rosa DeLauro's office for comment was met with "you have to call her campaign office", where you are met with an answering machine. Time to pile on Rosa to get her to retract her endorsement of Senator Lieberman (I)CT.

Can you give the numbers? (0.00 / 0)
I'll give them a call if I can be wicked lazy about it and not have to actually search for it. :D

give them a ring (0.00 / 0)
I'd encourage folks to contact Dodd (860-258-6940), DeLauro (203-497-8034), and Farrell (203-227-5447) and ask them if they will reject Lieberman's independent bid and support the winner of the Democratic primary.  Here are CT Blogger's answers from others, and contact info for others.

Also Kevin Sullivan will co-host from 3-6 on Wednesday on WTIC.

I just called Chris Dodd's office (0.00 / 0)
I just called the number above.  The woman who answered the phone said that Dodd still supports Lieberman and will not pledge to support the winner of the Democratic primary.

She said that if Lieberman loses the primary, Senator Dodd will decide then. For now, he will NOT pledge to support the winner of the Democratic primary.

Fine (0.00 / 0)
Headline:

Chris Dodd will not pledge to support the winner of the Democratic primary.

Completely factual and concise.

Evidently Joe is not the only out-of-touch CT-Sen around...

What an ass. (0.00 / 0)
It's just like in 2000. What a gutless ass he is.

By the way, that Courant link sends you to some home travel agency site.

WHY IS THE CANDIDATE WITH THE PARTY ENDORSEMENT PETITIONING TO GET ON THE BALLOT?

(I may actually scream that to parade watchers tomorrow...)

Boltin JOE (0.00 / 0)
He is taking out the wrong petitions...he should switch his registration to Republican..it would have been more honest.

This is a Senator who places his self interest ahead of the folks of the state and his party...good riddance !!!!!

And I KNOW how they are going to spin this (0.00 / 0)
They'll get their 7500 signatures really quickly, and then tout the fact that it only took them a few days to get such an amount, there's nothing to worry about, we have such large support, isn't that great, past the bourbon.

Social libertarian.

Party support should be withdrawn (4.00 / 1)
Joe Lieberman has just announced that he will not abide by Democratic  party rules and support the winner of the Democratic primary.

Therefore, the Democratic party should IMMEDIATELY withdraw all support for Lieberman.  Party headquarters offices should no longer display his signs; he should not longer be included on call scripts or in Democratic literature.

Joe Lieberman is disloyal, dishonest, and a disgrace.

Lieberman BAILS The Democratic Party.

At 1PM on July 3, 2006 Joe Lieberman announced that he, the endorsed Democrat in the CT Primary, was petitioning to run as an Independent in the CT General Election. Joe's decision to bail out of the Democratic party is based on his internal polling that shows that he can not win the primary against Ned Lamont.

Take action!

Call everyone you know and tell them that Joe thinks it's his seat, not the people of CTs. Call anyone you know and have them donate to Lamont. Call people you know that have donated to Joe and ask them if they gave it to Joe or did they give to a Democrat, and if they say "Democrat", have them ask for their money back; they were lied to!

Joe has left the Democratic Party.

For the record, there is no such thing as an "independent Democrat". That's the reason that parties have primaries, to elect their representative. Joe's independent Democrat will join Bush's compasionate conservative (it's amazing how much Joe and George sound like one another, if we hadn't seen them together for "the kiss" one would have to wonder if they don't just morph from one to the other... but it's nice to see that Rove can pull both their strings equally well) as another bold faced lie used to trick the voting public. Sort of like the term "upstanding whore".

The question is not what you are, we already determined that, we are now negotiating price.

Selfish opportunist now wants to run for President! (0.00 / 0)
This headline from the Norwich Bulletin just now cracks me up:

"Lieberman will petition to potentially run for President as independent"

If your phone rings it's Joe. (0.00 / 0)
Joe's already left a message (2:05pm) on my answering machine explaining his collecting signatures.  Feels that he can do a better job than his opponent in the difficult years ahead...blah..blah..blah.. and is naturally supporting the democratic party but wants all the state to be able to vote for him. Always looking to have it both ways! Remember 2000. Just caring about Joe, the rest of the party be damned.

I'm not sure but, (0.00 / 0)
I was recently looking through some items on the Connecticut State Government site (http://www.ct.gov/) about cross endorsement and I believe that a major party cannot "cross" endorse a petitioning candidate.

http://www.cga.ct.gov/2005/rpt/2005-R-0859.htm

"While Connecticut law prohibits major or minor party candidates for a particular office from appearing on the ballot as a petitioning candidate for that office, it allows them to appear on the ballot as the nominee of two or more major or minor parties for the same office."

In other words,
Does this mean that once Lieberman's petitions are certified, Lieberman must be removed from the Democratic line on the ballot? Including the primary ballot, since he would be considered a "petitioning" candidate for the office?

eh?

I guess. (0.00 / 0)
But couldn't he put off getting petitions actually certified until he lost? He'd still have the following day, correct?

Social libertarian.
