Lieberman Rebuffs Lamont Challenge - Will Not Support if Lamont Wins

by: Neal Fink

Tue Jun 13, 2006 at 09:42:34 AM EDT

This morning on WSTC/WNLK here in Connecticut, Lieberman campaign manager Sean Smith made it official. He said this to news reporter Erik Campano,

Are we going to support Ned Lamont? Ah, no! (laughs)...

Listen to the audio clip (MP3 , 42kb, 10sec)

Please recommend the cross-post of this diary at DailyKos. We need national attention on Lieberman's repeated lack of party loyalty. Oh yes, there's more...

Neal Fink :: Lieberman Rebuffs Lamont Challenge - Will Not Support if Lamont Wins

Smith goes on to make eroneous claims that Lamont is a closet Republican, and that's the reason why Lieberman will not support him. As in the past, Smith claims, without any specifics, that when serving on the Greenwich Board of Selectmen and Board of Estimates and Taxation he voted with the Republicans 80% of the time. Smith fails to mention that Lamont served on these boards over 12 years ago, and that in Greenwich town politics there are rarely divisive partyline votes as in the US Senate. The Lieberman campaign attempted to paint Lamont as a Republican in their "Greenwich Millionaire" TV ads, which were pulled almost immediately because they were not effective. I assumed they would have moved onto another strategy by now.

Lamont spokesperson, Liz Dupont-Diehl responded to Smith's remarks by quoting from Joe Lieberman's own book, In Praise of Public Life, saying

"it's unfair and misleading to go back many years into an opponent's record and take isolated votes and distort them, and here he is doing the exact same thing" (more in the clip)

Listen to the audio clip (MP3, 81kb, 20sec)

Smith's comments were in response to questions about Ned Lamont's latest radio ad , in which he makes this challenge to Senator Lieberman:

So I have a challenge for our junior senator. Joe, let’s both go to the Democratic primary on August 8th, and let the people of Connecticut decide. I’ll pledge to back you one hundred percent if you win. And for the good of the party, you’ll pledge to support me one hundred percent if I’m victorious. What do you say Senator? May the best Democrat win.

Stories about the new Lamont radio spot are all over the news and blogs this morning. But, it appears that local reporter Campano was the only one to get the Lieberman campaign on the record stating Lieberman's intentions to NOT support the winner of the Democratic primary. Perhaps Sean Smith thinks that no one listens to AM radio anymore?

Several newspapers, including The Boston Globe picked up the story of Lamont's ads from the Associated Press. Though the AP story does not have the Lieberman campaign saying they will not support Lamont if he wins.

Lieberman is playing right into Lamont's hands (0.00 / 0)
Gotta love this.  It's like the spirit of Frank Capra is writing an update to his famous movie "Mr. Smith Goes to Washington".

Ned's radio ad will resonate with CT Democrats, and Lieberman's unwillingness to back Lamont after Lamont agreed to back Lieberman, if he wins the Dem Primary, demonstrates Lieberman's real colors to CT Democrats, the colors of a whiny, arrogant, and sore loser.

Also, wasn't Lieberman one of the 2004 Dem Presidential candidates who refused to publicly support Howard Dean, if Dean had won the 2004 Dem Prez Primary?  If so, Lieberman is reusing an old script.

What a good idea... (4.00 / 1)

He took the idea to a whole other level.

Calling Lamont a closet Republican is a reused tactic of Lieberman's (0.00 / 0)
He's trying to counter Lamont calling Joe "George Bush's favorite Democrat" with labeling Lamont as a closet Republican.  In the ads they just pulled, they accused Lamont of being Republican because he was rich, but that failed miserably.

This will also fail as long as Ned Lamont keeps challenging Lieberman and showing why Ned would make a better senator.

He's A Closet Republican AND a Left-Wing Wierdo! (0.00 / 0)
"Every single weirdo in the left wing will be there," Droney said. "That's what the Lamont strategy is all about."

I love it. They don't have a clue what they are doing. This closet Republican stuff only makes Ned look better!

You're right! (0.00 / 0)
I didn't even think of it that way...looks like the Lieberman camp is talking out of both sides, chasing their tail, running in circles...and will be hoist by their own petard

I Think This Is Hilarious (0.00 / 0)

...Meanwhile,(Lieberman spokeswoman Marion)Steinfels tried to portray Lamont as leaning to the right, accusing him of voting with Republicans most of the time he served on the Greenwich Board of Selectmen.

"We feel Washington already has enough Republicans like Ned," she said.

Do they really think that they will convince voters Ned is too conservative? - I LOVE it!

Yes, it's so pathetic (0.00 / 0)
The Lieberman camp is desperately grasping at straws...and I agree that it's a real hoot to watch. My husband saw that "Ned is a Greenwich millionaire" commercial and laughed saying, "Is this the best Lieberman could come up with?" LOL.

If Joe has the courage to debate... (4.00 / 3)
If Joe has the courage to debate Ned, and I doubt that he has the courage to stay in the primary long enough to even get to debates, but IF he does, Ned's got some really great openings here.

Which would Democrats rather have, a person who sides with Republicans on the budget for the Bruce Museum or a person who sides with Republicans on whether to invade another country and start a war based on fabrications.

Hmmmm.

Tough choice.

I think Ned's also got a great line here in saying something like, "It's clear you've spent more time in Washington than in Connecticut if you really think that every vote on sidewalk repairs or sewer drain installations is a partisan issue."

turn this into LTTE (0.00 / 0)
You write, "Which would Democrats rather have, a person who sides with Republicans on the budget for the Bruce Museum or a person who sides with Republicans on whether to invade another country and start a war based on fabrications."

I recommend you turn this into a LTTE and send it!

I second Sufi's nomination (0.00 / 0)
This is a really great angle.

Also, be sure to expose the foolishness of framing Lamont as a right-wing Republican supported by left-wing weirdo extremists.
