Why I hate DailyKos

by: Neal Fink

Wed Jun 07, 2006 at 23:50:19 PM EDT

Many people have asked me why I chose MyLeftNutmeg as my main blog hangout. Well, a major reason is that I got fed up with Kos (the site, not the person.) Most Kossacks think they are incredibly smart, outstanding progressives, and skilled writers. A few posess all three of these traits, but the vast majority, none. Here at the Nutmeg I found a group of intelligent and passionate people writing quality commentary. The rule of "There are no rules, except don't be an a-hole" is also appealing. Remarkably, most tend to follow these simple rules. Finally, the idea of a smaller community, where I can actually read everyting each day, and know that my diaries are being read, is quite satisfying.

So, why do I bring this up today? Occasionally I tred over to Kos, because of a link passed on by a friend. Today I wanted to see Scarce's post of the Kos (the person) interview on Russert, and offer my recommend. I ended up in the middle of a flame war with a prick more concerned about Kos etiquette then actually appreciating Scarce's work. Political debate would be so much more satisfying if all the people that disagreed with me would just go away (kidding.)

Please go over to Kos, recommend the diary, and defend the honor of our own Scarce. http://www.dailykos.com/story/2006/6/7/19542/90899

Thanks (0.00 / 0)
Part of the diary police mentality over there. I've done that myself, chastise people for writing diaries which are too short. This time I said the hell with it because I wanted to promote something and didn't want to be bothered spending a lot of time on a diariy which scrolls into oblivion after an hour. The success of DailyKos is part of the problem over there now: name dairists or pet causes become recommended while other often better work is not recognized (not that this would fall into that category so much).

So, my only gripe with Elwood was his remark about being an "egomaniac". Yeah Elwood, it's all about me....Anyway, I make no apologies for pushing a particular point of view. The clip received several hundred views last night from DailyKos so it's worth suffering a few slings and arrows.

Thanks also to Maura, spazeboy and whomever else stepped up to defend my honor. ;)

Just Read It (0.00 / 0)
Personally, I find all the precious complacency of the majority of commenters just insufferable.  The diaries and articles generally are good.  You have to beware of getting into the comment lists, although I like "WYFP!".  That generally is more fun, or at least a place where people drop the attitude and "get real" for a while.

DailyKos (0.00 / 0)
MLN has just recently shifted into first over DailyKos.

I enjoy the posts there; but it's gotten too big to really be a corner hang out. This isn't the fault of anybody; being larger is a different dynamic. Me, I rarely read comments if a thread is over 50 comments; and i wonder how many people really scroll down to read comment number 507.

Here I'm sure that my comments will at least be read.

You're reading them right now, in fact.

Neal, I couldn't agree more (0.00 / 0)
Whether it is deliberate or not, the mess of contradictory and flailing posts by the mass of Kos readers and users falls right into the right-wing stereotype of "those crazy liberals". It has good poll information and what have you, but  I prefer Andrew Sullivan, Matthew Yeglesias, and other solo endeavors, generally speaking.

It's messy (0.00 / 0)
but it's a community.

It can be a pain (0.00 / 0)
I post a good deal over there but I truly am getting sick of all of the primadonnas, like Armando. Yes, he should not be outed but he wonders why so many people dislike him when he responds with "Kiss my ass" or "You don't know what you're talking about". When there is a diary every few days or week about how bad Armando is, you stop believing that he is the poor, hapless victim. And then, with the drama of Joan Crawford, he says he is fading away from the world of blogs but, as of yesterday, he was still at the sregs of some of those threads saying, "Your post was malicious", "I didn't say that.."  Smart guy but huge drama queen and huge ego.

And also, you wull get 5000 posts on "so and so troll rated me" while, you know, something like the Net Neutrality issue, which could effect the entire blogosphere, gets 1-2 diaries.

It is still a good resource but I fear the egos of certain people and the infighting could make it a lot less useful.

The Armando thing was ridiculous (0.00 / 0)
Anyone with modest Google skills could have figured out Armando's identity long ago. He never did a particularly good job of keeping it secret. In "real life" Armando is a big-time corporate lawyer. It's surprising that he reacted to his being "outed" with such shock and in such a childish manner. Plus, I sort of agree with the critics that it's hypocritical, and perhaps unethical, to represent a company like Wal-Mart as a corporate attorney without disclosing that fact when writing about them online.
