Friday roundup

  • This is what a demand for change looks like.
Thousands of Connecticut residents marched to the state Capitol on Thursday to demand that lawmakers strengthen the state's gun laws in response to the school shooting that claimed the lives of 20 children and six educators.

The two women who organized the rally, Nancy Lefkowitz and Meg Staunton, have teamed up with Connecticut Against Gun Violence (CAGV) and embraced the group's agenda.

CAGV's agenda is the "the most ambitious" in the state's history, according to Ron Pinciaro, CAGV's executive director. It calls for a stronger assault weapons ban, universal background checks for all gun purchases, annual renewal of handgun permits, and increasing the liability for gun owners who fail to properly store their firearms.

It's an agenda supported by Veronique Pozner, whose son, Noah, was among those killed on Dec. 14.

Pozner said Dec. 14 was the tipping point.
"How could anyone think that my son's life or any of those whose lives were stolen that day were so disposable that it is acceptable to do nothing?" Pozner said.

  • Someone should forward this write-up to the laughable State Rep. from Newtown who wants to add a 10 percent "sin" tax on the purchase of violent video games.
A well-regarded expert on video game violence told the legislature's Children's Committee that there is no correlation between violent video games and mass shootings.
The expert was Christopher J. Ferguson, an associate professor of psychology and criminal justice at Texas A&M International University. Ferguson participated in Vice President Joe Biden's gun task force discussions this past January and on Thursday told the Children's Committee that "focusing on video games is the wrong path."

  • Had enough of Bridgeport Mayor Bill Finch?
Nearly a week after Blizzard Nemo dumped 30 inches of snow in the city - and more in nearby towns - Bridgeport is still digging its way out. In response to the city's delay in clearing streets, someone has started a Facebook group asking Finch to resign.

In the group's description someone wrote, "Mayor Finch's incompetence during Blizzard NEMO has not only hurt the city financially but endangered the health and safety of our city's residents. HE MUST RESIGN!"
