Murphy, 39, a three-term Democratic congressman, won by a margin unanticipated by most public or private polling: Unofficial, incomplete results show him winning 55 percent to 43 percent, a 12-point margin of victory.

"I was pleasantly surprised by the margin," Murphy said. "I've been consistently pleasantly surprised by the margins in the four races I've run. Yesterday was especially gratifying, given how rough the race was."

Murphy said he and his wife, Cathy Holahan, who is a legal aid lawyer, have not decided if they will establish a residence in Washington. As a congressman, Murphy has been sleeping in his office, flying home every weekend. They are the parents of two preschool sons.

"We are totally unprepared for this big change in our life," Murphy said. "We are superstitious enough to not to make any plans until after these races happened."

They first have plans for a trip to Disney World with their sons and extended family, including a cousin who has been deployed overseas with the U.S. military.

  • Ouch!
"I'd suspect that Linda McMahon is wondering now if some of the consultants that she hired took her for a ride and gave her advice that didn't play out well," Ronald Schurin, a professor of political science at the University of Connecticut, said.

Schurin was one of five professors who, on the day after the election, delved into the broader implications of the results in state and federal races. After the panel he said there's evidence that self-funded candidates like McMahon, who have a lot of resources to spend, are sometimes convinced by the people they hire to spend more than what's necessary.

"One would think that someone with broad business experience would be more immune," he said. "She paid an awful lot compared to what she ended up getting."

"Linda McMahon campaigned as a job creator and she certainly was because she spent $100 million in her two races, much it of hiring people both distributing her literature, distributing her T-shirts and generally to work for her campaign," he said during the forum.

  • Let the blame game begin.
State House Minority Leader Lawrence Cafero just wants his party to look at the facts.

Backing self-funding candidates with no government experience is just not cutting it.

Cafero, who continues to be the winning Republican state official in Democratic Norwalk, said it is time for the GOP to start promoting from within and building a bench.
