Woo Hoo!

by: Scarce

Sun May 28, 2006 at 11:44:25 AM EDT

In the segment where Tweety asks the rountable pundits to tell him something he doesn't already know, Jonathan Alter of Newsweek on the Chris Matthews Show:

"Joe Lieberman is in real trouble against Ned Lamont for the Democratic primary in Connecticut. Even if he goes Independent he may not ...."

I was making lunch so didn't catch all of it.

Lieberman and his handlers must be gritting their teeth when a national news program begins serving the reality of his present situation to its' viewers.

Lets Start writing those Letters to the Editor (0.00 / 0)
and destroying the "Centrist" Bulls#*T the MSM continues to Print and Spew on the Tube.

Lieberman is a Radical Neocon and belongs to organizations with Fascist leanings like  The Committee on the Present Danger ( http://www.fightingterror.org/ ).

His 7  million Warchest has millions donated by corperate Pacs and Corperate officers who are registered Republicans. Joe Lieberman  Donor roster is full of people who also Donated to George W Bush and the ONLY Dem most of these Donors gave to is Lieberman.

WHY IS THIS THE CASE JOE?

what is a centerist? (0.00 / 0)
Let the corporate media define it? No way!

I do like how the corporate media is already starting the meme that Joe may be only a viable candidate if he bolts the party.

The question is not what you are, we already determined that, we are now negotiating price.

A Scenario... (0.00 / 0)
I heard this argument from a friend of mine who used to work for Lieberman that since Arthur Schlesinger is sort of? a legitimate Republican candidate and that he's cleverly clung himself to Rell, we need Lieberman to hold on to that Senate seat.  The argument is, "Rell's gonna kill DeStefano or Malloy in a landslide, and Connecticut will probably be more favorable to Republicans because of Rell's popularity.  Thus, we need a centrist and a known entity so people don't get worried that Lamont's not up to the job."

If you ask me, that is the most sensible argument anyone has ever made about Lieberman winning, and to be honest it made me think a little bit because at the end of that day, that is sort of a possibility.

By no means am I saying that Lieberman should win, but what do people think of that argument for his re-election?

national v. state issues (0.00 / 0)
Rell's popularity has nothing to do with national issues (the war, etc).  She is not going to help Schlesinger.

How do you explain why CT has had a republican governor since 1994, but all Dem senators for that same period?

[ Parent ]
Schlesinger supports Right wing extremist positions, like (0.00 / 0)
privatizing Social Security which most CT voters oppose.

Lamont's campaign is about holding elected leaders, like George Bush accountable.  Neither Lieberman nor Schlesinger will do that.  That is why we need change, but change that will support our Constitutional Rights.

I don't accept the premise that Rell is going to win at all (0.00 / 0)
never mind in a landslide.

Six months ago all these same people were telling me "NO WAY THERE'S GOING TO BE A PRIMARY AGAINST LIEBERMAN!! and I used caps because these people were screaming it at me.

Six Months is 2 lifetimes in politics and I think Rell is going to get squashed like a bug once she is forced to come out of hiding.
John Rowland picked Jodi Rell because she was stupid not because of any other reason and if you've been paying attention she's proven him right over and over again.

A Different Prediction (0.00 / 0)
Come August, if Lamont will be the Democratic candidate in November (either because he wins the primary or Joe goes indy), the Republican party bigwigs will ask Schlesinger to step aside so they can slot-in a stronger candidate. Who will they pick? My guess is Chris Shays. I know, that sounds sort of nuts. But consider this. Unless something drastic changes between now and Novemeber, Shays is going to lose to Diane Farrell. Without the baggage of pro-war Joe, Farrell can align with Lamont and the rest of the Dems to run against the war and the Bush administration. The margin will be large and embarrassing for Shays.  So rather than go down in a fiery crash, a shot at the Senate might look attractive to Shays. Plus, he's the strongest player the Rethugs have to challenge Lamont or a possible three-way race involving Lieberman, Lamont, and a Repub. What they don't want is a three-way race, because Lamont will win for sure. Lieberman (I) and the Republican candidate would split the conservative vote, giving Lamont a healthy victory. Not many Dems will follow Lieberman if he goes indy; they'll be way too pissed off.

My second prediction, not nearly as bold as the first... Rell is going to win in November, no doubt about it. Our only chance would have been a joint DeStefano-Malloy ticket, but the opportunity for that was over when Malloy won the convention. It doesn't matter who's at the top of the Democratic ticket, this is one we're just not getting this go around. Sorry, folks.

There's more in my crystal ball, but I'm saving it for another post.

Nope (0.00 / 0)
It does sound too nuts. Shays already has enough on his plate with Farrell than to potentially end his political career with a senate run.

Your second prediction looks to be virtual certainty at this point.

[ Parent ]
I don't think so (0.00 / 0)
The Repukes have never liked Shays -- they tried to get rid of him several times in the past.  He's just something they've learned to live with, although lately he's been trying to win their favor with some of his votes.

They certainly wouldn't want to put him in the Senate.

If there's a three-way race, I think Wm. F. Buckley and his gang will back Lieberman, the way they did in 1988 to put him in the Senate.

[ Parent ]
Slightly More Different Prediction (0.00 / 0)
If Lieberman goes independent, I predict that the Rape-ublicans will either choose to run no candidate and overtly throw their support to Lieberman, or they will run a throw-away candidate and covertly support Lieberman.

LIEberman is the perfect GOP candidate for the CT Senate race. He's got a 70% approval rating among GOP voters, the media portrays him as a moderate/centrist, he's been a big enabler of the Bush agenda, and having him be a DEM or an IND helps provide "bi-partisan" cover for their partisan agenda. The GOP loves Joe Lieberman.

Lieberman hurts Murphy, Courtney, Farrell (0.00 / 0)
Any doubt that Lieberman helps our three congressional challengers was erased today.

Any lingering thought that Joe is a loyal Democrat was also erased today.

There is graphic evidence.

Joe was in the Waturbury Parade.  He could have walked with a group of his supporters.

Instead he chose to walk with Nancy Johnson and her 8 or so supporters.  Not just a little bit...the entire parade...Nancy and Joe together...at times it looked like they were holding hands...certainly smiling and joking together.

Look at the Lamont Blog comments about the parade to see the sad  graphic evidence.

Spazeboy recorded the momentous event in all its 18 secs of glory --the mainstream media reporting what we've known for months.

The last sentence wasn't too clear (0.00 / 0)
he said that Joe would run as an Independent and win in a three-way race, and then ------------- with the Democrats.

Can anyone fill in the missing words?

[ Parent ]
Backroom deals (0.00 / 0)
"but in a three-way race he would be the favorite, and then go back and sit with the Democrats"

Uh, yeah, that's the plan alright. Unless Joe has cut a deal I doubt there is any guarantee the Democrats would want him back. He'd have to have an awful lot of leverage to try and pull that one off.

[ Parent ]
Actually (0.00 / 0)
I can guarantee there is no deal right now, no promises made on a hypothetical. Harry Reid is far too sharp for that. What he would say is this:

"If you have to run as an Independent to win the seat of course we'll talk after that about your rejoining the Democratic Party. I will support you now and hopefully none of this will come to pass."

Then they shake hands and Joe leaves the room, not altogether sure where he stands, no firm commitment in place.

What would bother me more is if Joe has some sort of pact with Hillary Clinton if she feels she needs to stifle the progressive movement to help her get the nomination in 2008. That would suck.

Such is the game of high stakes politics though. Ego and ambition trump everything, including the will of the poeple --if the will is weak.

[ Parent ]
This is a big IF (0.00 / 0)
If the Senate was 50-49 Dem without Joe what would Joe do? (assuming that Joe won as an indy). If it was 51-49 Dem including Joe (if he won as an indy) would he play let's make a deal and try to squeeze somebody for a plum assignment? As far as I am concerned, this campaign is not to send Joe a message. It is for his defeat.
