Asked today about Sen. Joe Lieberman's (I-CT) claim that President Obama didn't pressure him on a public option, White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs said Obama "absolutely" did everything he could for health care reform.

Gibbs said Obama has been clear on what he supported, and senators have been clear on what they didn't support. He added that the president is very pleased with the Senate bill, which has 95 percent of what he wanted.

Sen. Tom Harkin (D-IA) told TPMDC that he was surprised Obama didn't push for it. "I just assumed that" he did, Harkin said.

If I was drowning and expected Obama to do "everything he could" to save me, and had this "everything he could" as the backdrop to know what I could expect...

My only question is what type of headstone would I get.

Sometimes 95% is not good enough (4.00 / 2)
In general, I am against war. The U.S. is not attacking 95% percent of the countries in the world.  Some would say I should be satisfied with 95%

I am against the death penalty.  95% of prisoners are not executed.

I am against torture. 95% of Iraq's have yet to be tortured.

I am for voting integrity.  Somehow 95% of the votes being counted accurately is not good enough for me.

I am for the right to choose. 95% of the time people don't even need to choose.

I am for airline safety.  If I knew a plane had a 95% chance of arriving safely, that would not be good enough for me.

I am for healthcare.  95% of the people being able to pay 95% of the time, is just not a cure for HealthInsuranceBonusCare.

PS: 95% of the time 95% of us are not sick.

Don't believe what I say, believe what I didn't say. (0.00 / 0)
Obama said the public option "has become a source of ideological contention between the left and right." But, he added, "I didn't campaign on the public option."

Washington Post, 2008

My plan builds on and improves our current insurance system, which most Americans continue to rely upon, and creates a new public health plan for those currently without coverage. Under my plan, Americans will be able to choose to maintain their current coverage if they choose to. For those without health insurance I will establish a new public insurance program, and provide subsides to afford care for those who need them.

The New Republic, 7/30/08

Senator Obama "Included An Optional Public Plan" In His Health Care Proposals. According to Jonathan Cohn of The New Republic, Senator Obama "included an optional public plan in his eventual blueprint for universal coverage."

Columbus Dispatch, 9/23/08

Although Obama would not require adults to have insurance, he would mandate that large businesses either provide coverage to their employees or pay into a new public plan through which anyone without coverage could buy it.

The Lima News, 10/5/08

Obama's plan includes the creation of a national plan of private and public options.

NPR.org, 10/20/08

"I think we can say that there are really two key aspects of Obama's plan. One is that he would expand Medicaid and the State Children's Health Insurance Plan, which was a program set up by Congress about a decade ago. The second part is something that's a little bit nebulous right now and that's called his public option. He's not quite sure how this will work or how it will actually emerge in any kind of legislative process. But the gist of it is that people would be able to buy insurance from this public plan, and he often says that people would be able to buy the same kind of insurance that members of Congress have. It's not clear whether the insurance provided for the so-called public option will be provided by private carriers or whether it will be a Medicare-like program. In that particular program, the government provides the benefits."

Obama on the conference call with bloggers in response to a question from Joan McCarter from the DailyKos.  7/20/2009

"But, I can tell you, as I've been very clear about before, I continue to believe a robust public option is the best way to go."

I used to say that you could tell Bush was lying because his mouth was moving.
