Quinnipiac: Dodd 34 Simmons 50

by: Scarce

Thu Apr 02, 2009 at 07:58:52 AM EDT

Another day, another horrific poll from Quinnipiac for Chris Dodd.

Connecticut Sen. Christopher Dodd trails former U.S. Rep. Rob Simmons, a possible Republican challenger, 50 - 34 percent in the 2010 Senate race, according to a Quinnipiac University poll released today, as voters disapprove 58 - 33 percent of the job the Democratic incumbent is doing, his lowest approval rating ever.

Matched against two other possible Republican challengers, Sen. Dodd trails both State Sen. Sam Caligiuri 41 - 37 percent and former ambassador Tom Foley 43 - 35 percent, the independent Quinnipiac (KWIN-uh-pe-ack) University poll finds.

Doug Schwartz chimes in with:

"A 33 percent job approval is unheard of for a 30-year incumbent, especially a Democrat in a blue state. Sen. Christopher Dodd's numbers among Democrats are especially devastating. Since the AIG controversy, his approval rating among Democrats is down to 51 percent, and only 58 percent of Democrats say they will vote for him against Simmons, who at this point is the best known and strongest Republican challenger," said Quinnipiac University Poll Director Douglas Schwartz, PhD.

"The generic numbers are even worse for Dodd than the specific matchup numbers, with only a third saying they probably or definitely will vote for Dodd compared to 59 percent saying they definitely or probably won't vote for him," Dr. Schwartz added.

The numbers among Republicans and Independents are bad, of course, but that's to be expected. What is startling are his numbers among Democrats:

--41% disapprove of Dodd's performance as a Senator

--56% disapprove of Dodd as Senate Banking Committee Chairman

--39% of CT Democrats have an unfavorable opinion of Senator Dodd

A huge part of Dodds problem (4.00 / 3)
can be laid directly at the feet of Nancy DiNardo and the incompetent boobs at Dem State Central who have allowed Chris Healy and his goons to perpetrate a concerted smear campaign unimpeded.

Please show me one,JUST ONE,thing that has come out of State Central to refute the phoney and manufactured Countrywide story or butress Sen. Dodd. There has not even a god damn Press release from this organization that 6 months from now expects Sen. Dodd to raise a million or so to pay for their Convention.

Somebody please forward the above comment to DiNardo (4.00 / 2)
Is she on vacation or something? The only thing I hear coming out of State Central is...(insert sound of crickets chirping)

It's worse than Crickkets (4.00 / 4)
The fact that Justin Kronholm didn't have a clue what  LTTE stood for when it was suggested in an email by a blogger  that a LTTE campaign might be something he should consider starting is all the evidence needed to me he has no right to be in the job he holds. The fact that after he was informed the LTTE stood for Letter to the editor he did absolutely nothing shows he should be fired.

Queen Nancy seems to think her job is only to wave her white- gloved hand at the crowd and serve tea and crumpets to her 72 old fart subjects once a month instead of creating and pushing a narative in the press and at the grass roots level that helps our elected Democrats.

Heads should roll and Cts Democrats should start demanding somthing for the giant pile of cash being wasted on the giant pile of trash at Cts Dem Central Headquarters.

Heartily agreed... (0.00 / 0)
But there is much more that's wrong for Chris Dodd.  His mortgage controversies are coming at a time when people are angry as hell, don't really know what's happening to them, only that they're suffering.  They're confused and ticked off, and Dodd, as the chairman of financial services, looks like one of the very few targets against which to take out their wrath.

I fear that his situation is irreparable, and that he should seriously, and I mean SERIOUSLY, consider announcing his retirement.  If he tries for re-election, we will probably lose this state's only Democratic senator.

Oh yeah, and where is Joe Lieberman in this?  Has he come out in support of his great and dear old friend who stood up for him when he wanted his committee chairmanship again?  Of course the little hypocrite won't lift a finger to help Dodd against his real friends- the right-wing Republicans.  Not a finger!

[ Parent ]
I'm sure you would love for Dodd to retire (0.00 / 0)
as it would remove Blummy from between the Senate floor and Ned Lamont in 2012 but it ain't happening.

There aren't 5 Senators out of the 100 anyone here could name that have better for the Progressive movement than Our Senior Senator. He'll be our Nominee and he'll win reelection.

[ Parent ]
I wish you were right about the election... (0.00 / 0)
but a cold hard look at the numbers tells us that Dodd is going to lose.  I agree with you about all Chris Dodd has done for the state, the nation, and the Democratic Party.  I was prepared to vote for him for president, had he not withdrawn before the Connecticut primary.

But the times have changed, and he has a very thin chance at success next year.  Senator Dodd did say during the presidential campaign that he would retire in 2010 if he were not elected president.  And I must admit being angry at him for his continued support for LIEberman, sticking his finger in the eye of every Lamont supporter.

Who winds up with the Democratic nomination if Dodd decides to resign is a matter of conjecture.  Would I back Ned Lamont?  Yes.  Is Ned a shoe-in?  No.

But we cannot close our eyes to Senator Dodd's dire condition.  I don't think he can win, even with a year and a half to go until the election.  And he should not muddle through to an honorable defeat, handing a critical senate seat to the Republicans.

That would be wrong.  Better that Senator Dodd preserve his legacy and bow out gracefully now.

YES Hooker (0.00 / 0)
Dodd is going to lose just like Lieberman is safe from a primary challenge in 06.

Liebermans approval ratings were in the 70s with both parties members and indies, according to the Q-poll, 9 months  before that primary.

Using your logic Lamont should never run for any office again.

PS- Give me a link to your assertion Dodd said he would retire if not elected POTUS.

[ Parent ]
Actually 8 mos before the 2006 primary I thought Lieberman could be beaten! (0.00 / 0)
Just ask Ned Lamont what I told him in January of 2006.  Lieberman was vulnerable back then.

I just don't see it happening for Dodd.  And it's not worth taking a Senate seat away from the Democrats.

[ Parent ]
Here it is: (0.00 / 0)

This was rather suggestive at the time:

Sen. Christopher Dodd, through his counsel, has sent a letter  to the Federal Election Commission stating he "is no longer a candidate in the 2010 election for the United States Senate in Connecticut."

This letter helps set the stage for his Senate campaign committee, Friends of Chris Dodd, to declare it has excess funds and transfer the funds to his presidential campaign committee, Chris Dodd for President Inc. His Senate campaign committee reported $1,855,961 cash-on-hand as of 9/30. This amount will probably change with financial activity during the fourth quarter of 2006. His year-end report is due by 1/31/07.

[ Parent ]
I think you know that any Senator who runs for President (0.00 / 0)
and wants to use money he raised for his next Senate election in their Presidential run has to send this letter to the FEC.

I'd expect this sort of twisting of the truth from the other side TH,not from you.

[ Parent ]
Now that is not fair (0.00 / 0)
And I do seem to recall Dodd telling an interviewer that the presidential campaign would be his last campaign, although I can't locate the quote yet.

But twisting the truth?  That's unfair and uncalled for.

[ Parent ]
Faulty memory on Dodd's statements? (4.00 / 1)
Senator Dodd did say during the presidential campaign that he would retire in 2010 if he were not elected president.

I think you are remembering inaccurately what happened.  I don't know exactly how these things work, but IIRC, Dodd somehow transferred funds set aside for the 2010 run into his prez campaign.  I believe it was interpreted somehow that he was not running.

I don't believe he ever said any such thing -- I believe there was speculation about it, but no actual statement.

[ Parent ]
Dodd has already said (4.00 / 1)
that he's running for re-election. And no Democrat has stepped up to challenge him. So you have to assume that no one will.

If Dodd reforms banking and helps get universal health care passed, he will win re-election. If not, he won't.

Either way, Dodd won't have any friends in the corporate media. The media get more money from banks, insurance companies, and pharmaceuticals than Dodd does, and they will give him as much grief as they can.

(This bs poll by Quinnipiac and the front page coverage it will get is a perfect example.)

That may not matter though, so long as Dodd is able to point to banking and health care reforms. It would be nice if State Central could help get the message out when Dodd comes through with important legislation -- and to help reveal Simmons and Caligiuri as the schmucks that they are. Caligiuri has already stated he wouldn't have voted in favor of the stimulus package. I don't think Nancy DiNardo noticed!

As for Lieberman .... any Democrat who has to rely on Lieberman for support is in big trouble. Better to not go there.

[ Parent ]
No Democrat will challenge him. (0.00 / 0)
It would be politically suicidal.  When Ned Lamont stepped forward, the choice was between an ersatz Democrat (LIEberman) and a real Democrat (Lamont).  Now we're faced with a primary possibly even further damaging Dodd in his race against a far-right Republican.  No one will do that.

This is a decision for Dodd.  I hope he makes the right one.

[ Parent ]
I actually agree with you in general (0.00 / 0)
... but they did distribute a piece defending Dodd to their email list on 3/23.

But what's this about a million-dollar convention? I didn't go to the last meeting (thought the YD charade was too depressing), but that'd mean that the convention would cost over $600 per delegate to put on. I think they waste a bunch of money up there, but a million bucks for a state convention would be pretty conscience-shocking. Where'd you here this?

But then there is this: (0.00 / 0)
Hotline in January 2007 noted:

An inquiry to Dodd's campaign about the above mentioned story prompted the following response from spokesperson Beneva Schulte: "It's a legality that isn't an indication of future plans."

God love the FEC and its confusing rules on raising federal money.

I'm not a big Dodd fan (0.00 / 0)
I like him better than Lieberman but his gay support for Lieberman pisses me off so I'm not an enthusiastic Democrat for Dodd.  I do think that Dodd should retire.  He's been in Washington so long that he's out of touch with ordinary Americans.  He's part of the good old boys, Washington Beltway, pro-Establishment clique.  It's time for new Democratic blood in the Senate.

Right now I don't see Dodd cashing in his campaign chips.  He can wait until January 2010 and see how the polls are.  If they remain the same as this one or get worse, then he may be forced to announce his retirement.

As far as Gov. Rell, she doesn't seem to be the US Senate type.  Isn't her family mostly in CT?  If so, then I don't see her running for a US Senate seat.  She's not young anymore, so her campaign days may be waning.

What the Hell does "gay support" mean?n/t (0.00 / 0)

[ Parent ]
That surprised me, too (0.00 / 0)
What did you mean by that?

[ Parent ]
It was a joke from the Jon Stewart show (0.00 / 0)
Saw it about a week ago.

[ Parent ]
Here's the link to the clip from the Jon Stewart show (4.00 / 2)
Interview with a vampire (Dick Cheney)

The gay comment about Dodd and Lieberman comes between the 4:09-4:33 minute mark.  This episode originally aired on March 18, 2009.
