Glastonbury DTC Censures Joe Lieberman

by: BlastFromGlast

Wed Dec 03, 2008 at 09:03:46 AM EST

(Since the State Central debate on censuring Lieberman is approaching, it's important to demand that your DTC takes a stand on the issue.

- promoted by ctblogger)

The Glastonbury DTC voted on November 20th, the same evening as Greenwich, to Censure Joe Lieberman.  It took a bit longer to get the final document and also add names of Town Committee members who missed the vote and other Democrats who wanted their names added to the document.

BlastFromGlast :: Glastonbury DTC Censures Joe Lieberman

The Glastonbury Democratic Town Committee
Glastonbury, Connecticut
Notice of Censure for Joseph Lieberman - Independent Senator, Connecticut

  • Whereas Joe Lieberman actively campaigned for the Republican candidate for President and impugned the competence of the Democratic candidate for President at the Republican National Convention,
  • Whereas Joe Lieberman chose to ignore the will of the Democratic party in the 2006 election for US Senate and chose to run as an independent candidate,
  • Whereas Joe Lieberman is a key player in several organizations that promote US hegemony and the use of pre-emptive war including The Foundation for the Defense of Freedom (where he serves as 'Distinguished Advisor') (1) and The Committee on Present Danger (where he serves as Honorary Co-chairman with Jon Kyl, James Schultz, James Woolsey and along with Kyl received their 'Distinguished Statesman' award (2, 3) in June,
  • Whereas Joe Lieberman trumpeted the creation of the Department of Homeland Security, then, when the White House proposed to shortchange funding the new department's inaugural budget in 2003, issued 8 press releases decrying the plan and promising to rectify the situation. But when it came time for the U.S. Senate to vote on increasing funding, he was nowhere to be found,
  • Whereas Joe Lieberman>skipped every single Senate vote that could have increased homeland security funding in the first critical year of the new department's existence. His absence in a debate on legislation to potentially increase security funding to Connecticut's cities meant the difference between the bill passing and losing."(4),
  • Whereas Joe Lieberman voted for the original USA Patriot Act and the later reauthorization of expired provisions,
  • Whereas Joe Lieberman was one of only 6 Democrats who voted to confirm Alberto Gonzales as Attorney General and the only democratic senator from new England, in spite of Gonzales' support of torture, rendition and eavesdropping on US citizen(5),
  • Whereas Joe Lieberman was the only Democrat in New England, one of only 11 in the senate to vote for the Military Commissions Act of 2006 that denies prisoners the right to habeas corpus, sanctions torture and protects members of the administration from prosecution for war crimes(6),
  • Whereas Joe Lieberman was the only Democrat in New England to vote for cloture in the bankruptcy bill (7) when it could have made a difference in the outcome, then, when it was too late to make a difference, he voted against it (8),
  • Whereas Joe Lieberman was the only New England Democrat to vote for cloture on the Alito nomination then, when there was no chance the vote would fail, he voted against the nomination (10, 11). This vote opens the country up to further erosion of separation of church and state, erosion of civil rights and further expansion of presidential power,
  • Whereas Joe Lieberman voted not to censure President Bush for authorizing the NSA to spy on Americans, an illegal act that threatens our liberties, but he voted to censure President Clinton for behavior that is not illegal and posed no threat to the nation,
  • Whereas Joe Lieberman was absent for the vote on the Fair Credit Reporting Act 2003 that permanently limits states rights to enact stronger consumer protections and privacy laws (12),
  • Whereas Joe Lieberman was the only Democrat to support the president's idea of private accounts. (13) Once it was clear that the issue had no traction, Joe Lieberman joined Democrats in opposing the President's plan,
  • Whereas Joe Lieberman voted for NAFTA and was the only Democratic senator in New England to vote for CAFTA (14). Whereas Joe Lieberman opposed Democratic efforts to negotiate side agreements to protect worker rights, human rights and the environment (15),
  • Whereas Joe Lieberman voted to table a bill that would have forced drug companies to offer drugs developed at taxpayer expense at fair prices (16),
  • Whereas Joe Lieberman was one of only 7 democrats to vote against an amendment to the Class Action Fairness Act that would allow tougher state laws to prevail in class action suits. The Class Action Fairness Act later passed with Lieberman voting in favor of the bill (17),
  • Whereas Joe Lieberman was one of only 15 democrats to vote against the Cluster Munitions amendment (18) which would have banned the sale of cluster bombs by the US until the defense department adopted rules preventing their use on citizens. (As many as 50 % of the bomblets in these bombs don't detonate on impact but later explode when civilians collect them as souvenirs or when military return to clear areas of unexploded devices),
  • Whereas Joe Lieberman supports the Death Penalty even for minors (19),
  • Whereas Joe Lieberman has demonstrated unwavering support of the war, the greatest contributing factor to the growth in the national debt.

We the under-listed members of the Glastonbury Democratic Town Committee, representing a majority of those present, voted to publicly censure and repudiate the words and actions of Senator Joe Lieberman, Connecticut-Independent, on November 20, 2008, at its regularly scheduled meeting:

Which DTC's have now voted for this resolution? (0.00 / 0)
Is there any centrally-kept list?

PLEASE RESPOND! (0.00 / 0)
I, too, would like to know how many DTCs have voted for this, or a similar, resolution.  Thank you.

[ Parent ]
No list that I am aware of (0.00 / 0)
The only one's I've seen reported are Greenwich and Glastonbury.  The only place, so far, that I have seen them reported is right here at MLM.

Resolutions to Censure (0.00 / 0)
In September the Milford Democratic Town Committee Executive Board voted to support the Resolution that was then tabled at the State Central meeting later that month.

Where is the Therefore? (0.00 / 0)
I understand that this is a censure resolution, but were is the censure? There is no "Therefore". Resolutions need to resolve to do something? Am I missing something here? It just reports that those at a meeting voted to censure but where is the actual censure wording?

It's Right in the Title: (0.00 / 0)
Notice of Censure for Joseph Lieberman.

As it is, some of the DTCs are quarreling over whether to even use that term. One group is said to be compromising on "disapprobation." It seems to me that the important thing is to send a loud and clear message that Connecticut's Democrats are very displeased with Joe.

Given that some in the hierarchy remain loyal to him, I believe that a compromise resolution is better than nothing. While no consequences may arise from this round, a record of "censure" could help to clip his wings in 2012.

Joe as a negative role model - pols, don't try this at home (0.00 / 0)
After Joe's end run of the party, there was a rash of copy cat similar situations.

If enough towns take a stand and the implications for Joe's future become clear, we may help cause copy catters to think twice about emulating the kind of actions Joe has taken -- and I don't mean his votes per se, egregious as many are.

If the MSM picks up on Joe's troubles at home (or blog readers read the tea leaves), maybe they will not think they can escape unscathed if they do the kid of stuff he has done, and think better of it.

THAT would be a positive outcome.

Wow. I hope that's a joke.

It's Not a Joke (0.00 / 0)
I was told that, in one DTC, this language was a definite possibility. Apparently, a few people (for reasons known only to themselves) wouldn't sign a censure motion, but were willing to join in expressing disapprobation. You can't make this stuff up! :)

. (4.00 / 1)
It's rare to see word power like that expended on behalf of such cowering weakness is all. Especially since it means the exact same thing -- why would someone use weaker, more confusing language unless they're embarrassed about their ideas?

Seriously though, debating an eviction down to a censure down to a motion of disapprobation would be what I might come up with if I was a Republican writing sketch comedy making fun of Democrats. The punchline would be that at the end, they'd just send Lieberman a letter asking him to please like us.

Why compromise? (0.00 / 0)
Whatever the DSCC decides, why not gather up and take 169 or whatever number of censures, disapprobations, etc., make a copy of all available as a PDF on a website for the press, wrap a ribbon around it and send them to Joe?

The specific variety of flavor of the various statements carries one message:  This group of DTCs felt strongly enough about this situation to send you -- and the public -- a message, Joe.

There will be mild statements and strong statements, and nobody has to accept any more or less.  The group message is fine, but imho nobody's message should be lost in the rush to find consensus.

Great idea (0.00 / 0)
I initially felt this whole thing was kind of a waste of time but seeing the varying documents coming out of these DTC's has been pretty amazing.  That's the real impact.  People who care are saying, look, we're not rubber stamping some State Central document - we are doing our own research, writing down our own thoughts, having our own debates.

Wrapping that up in a PDF for Joe sounds like a pretty good idea to me.  He'll probably downplay it, ignore it, laugh at it, whatever - but he should certainly understand in pretty clear terms that he has absolutely no chance of garnering any meaningful support amongst party faithful in 2012 (as opposed to the utter debacle of 2006).  What possible winning coalition does the guy put together given that fact?  His career is over in four years, end of story.

What Glastonbury did above is phenomenal, whoever did the research and footnoting there has to be commended.

Power to the People (0.00 / 0)
And I don't mean it in a hackneyed way.  Despite all the comments that this is a silly, or meaningless exercise, as you say, CT203, it is very moving to see the work and expression not from Faux News or the latest plastic newscaster, but from public statements of groups of citizens, one after the other.   I hope that every DTC will find its way to making its collective voice heard in its own unique expression.

I hope these messages will be among the first of many such collective expressions sent out by DTCs for other citizens to hear in the post-Bush era. (Hey, well Barney Frank said the other day that when Obama said there could only be one president at a time, he overstated how many presidents there are right now.)

I"d like to hear more from the DTCs.  I am proud and moved when I hear the voices of my fellow citizens raised in collective commitment and purpose.

For better or for worse, CT citizens hired Joe Lieberman and they are entitled to communicate THEIR thoughts and feelings.  They are under no obligation to communicate Harry Reid or Barack Obama or Chris Dodd's thoughts and feelings as expressed to the media for their edification, and they are under no obligation to try to acquiesce to their imagined direction.  The three mentioned have already done that, so citizens don't have to.

I hope DTC members wlll remember:  standing up and saying what you think/feel/believe is precious.  Don't talk yourself into losing that right because you think you have to be a tool or a peon or a foot soldier  in matters of conscience, that it's not politically cool to -- what?  Have an opinion?  Rock the boat?

Ar you going to go through life watering down your essence of being for the right to stuff envelopes for the DTC?  Where's that at?  By all means stuff envelopes, but you don't have to "stuff it".

This is called honest communication, whatever that communication may be.

And Now Wilton (0.00 / 0)
WILTON -- The Democratic town committee joined other Connecticut towns Tuesday night in signing a repudiation of Sen. Joe Lieberman.

Less harsh than a censure, the document states Lieberman endorsed and campaigned for Sen. John McCain, verbally attacked President-elect Barack Obama at the Republican National Convention and acted in ways that "directly contradict his express promises to support the Democratic nominee for president and exhibit extraordinary disloyalty to the countless Connecticut Democrats without whom his career as an elected official would never have been possible."

http://wiltonvillager.com/stor...

because Connecticut voters count: http://www.CTVotersCount.org

Here's my tally so far: (0.00 / 0)
Referring back to the censure resolution that we voted on in Greenwich, there were nine DTC chairman who had already voted for censure, five DTC's that voted as organizations, for censure, and one vice chairman who'd voted for it.

The five DTC's that voted for censure are:

Greenwich
Glastonbury
Wilton
Branford
Hebron

The nine DTC chairmen were from:

Oxford
Bridgewater
Fairfield
Beacon Falls
Barkhamsted
Canterbury
Woodbury
Sharon
Watertown

And the DTC vice chairman was from:

Simsbury

I understand that the Stamford DCC is about to take up the resolution soon.
