Lieberman Wins, We Lose

by: Jon Kantrowitz

Tue Nov 18, 2008 at 11:49:51 AM EST

A Democratic senator says Democrats are letting Sen. Joe Lieberman keep his prized chairmanship of the Senate Homeland Security Committee despite supporting Republican John McCain for president.

Sen. Tom Harkin said the verdict came in a closed-door meeting on Capitol Hill.

And They Put Off A Vote To Expel Stetevens (0.00 / 0)
What do you have to do to get kicked out of your party or the Senate? These are absolutely outrageous decisons -

Some instant questions for some members (4.00 / 1)
To Chuck Schumer:  How about a refund to those who contributed to the DSCC this cycle?  You guys just rewarded someone who went around arguing that a filibuster-proof Senate would be a bad thing.  What do you think you got contributions for?  To pay for tea at the Old Boy Caucuses?  OK, maybe you'll say no one promised you would really try to get 60.  So how about refunds for that portion spent on the Maine and Minnesota races?  Your guy Lieberman, of the Connecticut for Lieberman Party, endorsed the Republicans in Maine and Minnesota.  And he gets to keep his seat?  Guess we shouldn't have contributed money for those races, right?

To Christopher Dodd:  OK, you say you're not going to run again, so what do you care, right?  But really, don't you have the slightest amount of self-respect?  You supported Lieberman in 2004.  This despite the fact that he's less popular among Democrats than Al Sharpton.  Despite his ball washing of Dick Cheney during the 2000 "debate."  This despite his founding of an organization (whose contributors get tax deductions) for he and Dick Cheney's wife to proclaim that US colleges and universities are too liberal.  I could go on, but you get the point.  And in 2008, he doesn't even give you a second look!  Yet, after he pals around with John McCain all summer, you decide to back Joe the Senator!  And you don't care that your constituents rejected his guy by over 60%!  Don't you at least have enough pride, if not to refrain from voting for the guy's rehabilitation, to at least not carry his water in public?

To Evan Bayh:  You must be such a disappointment to your father.

To Barbara Boxer:  You supported him in the 2006 primary.  You refuse to publicly condemn him for 2008.  You hide behind Harry Reid.  Is there any doubt what you did in your secret ballot?  Where do I make out the check for Schwarznegger for Senate?

To Bernie Sanders:  It's a damned shame you don't have a liberal party to caucus with.

To Al Franken:  You left SNL because it became a joke, and now you want to join the Democratic Senate Caucus?  Isn't it a bigger joke?  At least SNL has become funny again.

To  Harry Reid:  You ever read a book about LBJ?  No?  Maybe you should at least take a look at an encyclopedia article.  Have one of your aids get one from the Library of Congress.  I hear they have a lot of stuff on that sort of thing.  You know, those 3 buildings on Independence Avenue?  Still doesn't ring a bell?  OK, try reading the Wikipedia article.  Now, do you think LBJ wold have handled this thing the same way you did?  Do you think Lieberman would have had the balls to do what he did if LBJ were the Majority Leader?  I'd suggest you follow T S Eliot's recommendation in "The Difficulties of Being a Statesman," except there isn't a person in that Caucus that has either talent or backbone for the position.

Not a bad idea (4.00 / 2)
Everyone should ask for their contributions to the DSCC to be returned.

If the Democratic leadership is going to use us like a piggybank and then disenfranchise our vote and our wishes, there's no reason for Democrats to put any more money into an organization that works against us.
