Demanding action on the Lieberman censure resolution one DTC at a time

by: ctblogger

Mon Nov 17, 2008 at 14:21:24 PM EST

Let this be a reminder on the importance of being politically active in your community and why speaking out at your local Democratic Town Committee meetings can make a difference. This cross post is from HatCityBLOG

Now that the elections are over, the members of State Central will be forced once again to address the proposed resolution to censure Joe Lieberman. As you know, the issue of slapping Joe on his wrist was tabled by State Central until after the November elections and one of the rationales behind this decision was to to give time for Democratic Town Committee across the state to discuss the matter.

As a Ned Lamont supporter who saw first-hand how reluctant State Central and most "stick with Joe" DTCs are when it comes to ANYTHING critical of our junior senator, I made it a case to make sure to attend my local DTC's next meeting in Danbury and witness whether or not the Lieberman censure would be brought up for debate. On checking my DTC's website and seeing that the censure resolution was not on the agenda I did what every person who's fed up with Lieberman should do...made a photocopy of the resolution for every DTC member and request that they add the Lieberman item to their agenda and offer State Central an up or down vote on the proposal.

As I stated earlier, most DTC consists of several "stick with Joe" Democrats who supported Lieberman after the primary and my local DTC is no different (which is quite evident as you watch the footage). In the end, after much back and forth discussion between former supporters of Lieberman and people who wanted to take action, the committee to agree to approved an amended version of the resolution which was presented to State Central last week.

Although slightly different from the original proposal, the approved resolution gave several "stick with Joe" Democrats an opportunity to voice their disapproval with Lieberman. Being this matter to the committee also forced at least one other DTC to send a message to State Central in support of doing something about condoning Lieberman's actions during the presidential campaign.

Although this video of the debate is a bit long, I hope by watching it, more people will be encouraged to attend their local DTCs meetings before December and demand that they send chairwoman Nancy DiNardo and the members of State Central a message about censuring Lieberman once and for all.

Find the DTC in your area, tell them to address the Lieberman censure resolution, and demand an up or down vote on the proposal. While you're at it, spread the word about the online petition to censure Lieberman and get your friends to support the cause.

Remember, one person can make a difference!

(You can view a copy of the original resolution and modified resolution that was approved by the Danbury DTC below the fold).

Remind those who wanted to "Stick with Joe" that now we're all "Stuck with Joe".

HUFFPO: Give up subcommittee, keep Homeland Security? (0.00 / 0)
According to sources familiar with negotiations, Democrats are expected to vote in favor of letting the Connecticut senator keep his chairmanship and seniority, but give up the gavel on a subcommittee he chairs. The vote happens tomorrow morning by secret ballot.

Let's hope this is just a trial balloon sent out there to test the reaction and that they'll do the right thing rather than this bit of idiocy. If this comes to pass you have to wonder how stupid these Senate Democrats really are.

You really have to ask? (0.00 / 0)
Stupid enough that they gave Lieberman chairmanship of Homeland after he stabbed the Democratic party in the back in 2006...

So he goes three or four further in 2008 and we think they'll really get their dander up? I mean, Reid put Lieberman on notice, wasn't that enough?

Blah blah blah we can't do anything because Georgia is still voting. Did I miss the part in civics where town committee meetings in Connecticut have some impact on US Senate elections in Georgia. Why not wait until the 2012 election to make sure you have benefit of hindsight?

How about 'shit or get off the pot'? The Democratic Party is crippled by toxic mix of self-importance and self-imposed impotence. Just do something, anything. Tongue kiss Joe Lieberman on the lawn of the State Capital. Anything. Just stop pretending that NOTHING has happened.

The people who are actually DOING something about Joe Lieberman like circulating petitions and calling the US Senate steering committee are, in fact, more pissed off about what he did than the wet blankets. Sorry, you can't be simultaneously a fire-breathing activist AND a wet blanket. You can't have it both ways.
