Chris Shays gets off the Straight Talk Express

Edit: Chris Matthews also picked up on this later today on "Hardball".

Virtually certain now of McCain's imminent defeat Chris Shays effectively tosses McCain under the bus. In an interview with the Yale Daily News:

NEW CANAAN, Conn. - The first ballot has yet to be tallied, but some Republicans are already hammering nails into the McCain-Palin campaign's coffin.

Locked in a tight congressional race, Rep. Chris Shays of Connecticut's 4th district is the latest in a slew of Republican incumbents, including Sen. Elizabeth Dole of North Carolina, to concede a near-certain victory to the Obama camp.

"I just don't see how [McCain] can win," Shays said in an interview here on Sunday.

Shays, the Connecticut co-chair of McCain's campaign, said he was disappointed by the standards of McCain's race, which has increasingly relied on mudslinging.

"He has lost his brand as a maverick; he did not live up to his pledge to fight a clean campaign," Shays said.

And for AP :

"He's taken the thing that is most valuable, his (maverick) brand, and he's not staying true to it," Shays said. "I admire John McCain more than you can imagine. He would make a great president."

But, Shays added, "I don't see how he wins if he isn't true to who he is ... a straight shooter talking about the issues."

I suppose this would be surprising coming from the co-chair McCain's Connecticut campaign if it were anyone else but Chris Shays. But right now survival is the name of the game and it's every man for himself.

Typical Both Ways Shays (0.00 / 0)
Why should anyone be surprised?  This is the hypocrite who reversed himself in August 2006 and told voters that he now favored setting a timeline for withdrawal, then once safely re-elected, voted five times against timelines.

This is the guy who praised Tom DeLay as a "great majority leader" on the very day that DeLay was admonished by the House Ethics Committee for the third time in a year.

This is the guy who slammed Obama in interviews, but had no qualms about trying to exploit Obama's image in his campaign commercials.

This is the guy who cast the deciding vote for the biggest cut in the history of the federal student loan program.  Then just one year later, reversed himself and voted with the Democrats to try to reverse what he'd done the previous year.

Why should anyone be surprised?  The election is just a few days away and Shays is doing what Shays always does: saying and doing anything he can to save his political skin.

You Are Right On! As Usual . . . (0.00 / 0)
Of course, Shays hasn't resigned his co-chairmanship of the McCain campaign; nor has Joe LIEberman.  Both of these guys seem to think that Connecticut's citizens are ignorant and easily conned.  In the spirit of "Fool me once, shame on you; fool me twice . . . ." let's make sure that Shays learns -- this time -- that 4th District voters are wise to his conveniently timed flip flops!

Good old Both Ways . . . He is consistently inconsistent -- sort of like a maverick, I guess :)!

I've looked, but can't find it. How many votes has Joe missed since stumping for McCain?

Sarah Palin plans for 2012 (0.00 / 0)
ELIZABETH VARGAS: If it doesn't go your way on Tuesday ... 2012?

GOV SARAH PALIN: I'm just ... thinkin' that it's gonna go our way on Tuesday, November 4. I truly believe that the wisdom of ... of the people will be revealed on that day. As they enter that voting booth, they will understand the stark contrast between the two tickets. ...

VARGAS: But the point being that you haven't been so bruised by some of the double standard, the sexism on the campaign trail, to say, "I've had it. I'm going back to Alaska."

PALIN: Absolutely not. I think that, if I were to give up and wave a white flag of surrender against some of the political shots that we've taken, that ... that would ... bring this whole ... I'm not doin' this for naught.

CNN clip (0.00 / 0)

Blitzer: Republican VP Candidate Sarah Palin now speaking out openly about her intentions in 2012 if - if - she and John McCain were to lose this contest next Tuesday.  In an interview with ABC News, Sarah Palin is now saying she would be interested in remaining a serious national political figure going ahead to 2012.  She was asked, what happens in 2012 if you lose on Tuesday - do you simply go back to Alaska - Elizabeth Vargas of ABC News asked her - and Palin said this, and I'll read it to you verbatim according to an ABC transcript:

Absolutely not.  I think that if I were to give up and wave a white flag of surrender, I think that some of the political shots that we've taken - that that would bring this whole - and I'm not doing this for naught."

And that's a direct quote from Sarah Palin.

Blitzer: Any reaction yet, Dana, from this blunt statement that she would in fact be interested in leading the Republican Party going forward after Tuesday if they lose?

Bash: I just got off the phone, Wolf, with a senior McCain adviser and I read this person the quote and I think it's fair to say that this person was speechless.  There was a long pause and I just heard a "huh" on the other end of the phone.  I mean, this is certainly not a surprise to anybody who has watched Sarah Palin that she is interested in potentially a future national run.  Certainly she is being urged to be a lot of people inside the Republican Party if they do lose, but it is an if, and people inside the McCain campaign - they do not want ANY discussion that has in "if" in front of it six days before the election.

Let's all help wipe off that god-awful lipstick on Fairfield County minus Stratford (+Oxford).

Did you know... (0.00 / 0)
Dan Debicella (see other stories this week) used to write speeches for Chris Shays?

Then he got sorta busy.

Then he took a break to manage Rudy G's short-lived Presidential campaign.

Dan the Plumber.

Doesn't Shays depress his own voter turnout by doing this? (0.00 / 0)
Won't this make CT Republicans stay home and not vote for Shays himself?  I don't see how he thinks throwing McCain under the bus this way will help him.

This is not going to go over well with (0.00 / 0)
the Foxholes

"He has lost his brand as a maverick; he did not live up to his pledge to fight a clean campaign,"

I mean, admitting it's an ugly, dirty, filthy campaign...
