Lamont Petition Drive Kicks Off

by: BranfordBoy

Wed Apr 26, 2006 at 22:15:05 PM EDT

If the size of the crowd that turned out for the official petition drive training in New Haven tonight and the enthusiasm displayed by all and sundry is anything to go by (and I do believe it is), Ned Lamont's petition drive is going to be an enormous success.

The troops were rallied by the vision of wheelbarrow after wheelbarrow being wheeled onto the floor of the Democratic State Convention on May 20th bearing the tens of thousands of names of Dems from across the state demanding a change in Washington.

BranfordBoy :: Lamont Petition Drive Kicks Off
This is going to be a "directed" drive, using a massive phalanx of volunteers to fan out across the state armed with lists of registered Democrats. Don't expect to see those rickety card tables outside the Big Y or Stop n Shop.

Lieberman dirty tricksters beware! This crew is exceedingly well trained. Petition gatherers will be asking for ID to verify identity and will be on the lookout for the kind of subterfuges that might invalidate petition sheets.

If you want to sign the petition (and who wouldn't, really) and you don't know of anyone who's circulating it in your area, call the campaign (203-634-6601) and they'll get someone to swing round and collect your John Hancock.

If you are an unaffiliated voter, you can fill out a voter registration card (the volunteers will have them) and sign the petition at the same time.

If you'd like to circulate petitions, it's not too late to get involved. Training will be ongoing. Contact one of the Congressional District Coordinators:

1st: Ken Krayeski 860-995-5842
2nd and 5th: Rick or Matt @ Meriden HQ 203-634-6601
3rd: Eddie Vale 631-334-8191
4th: Ryan McLeod 914-261-8700

I was at the Norwalk meeting last night, where Ned appeared for a while to meet his supporters and speak briefly to the crowd.  About 50 volunteers stayed for the petition meeting afterwards.  A short video is on "Connecticut Bob", my new blog.  Feel free to link to it.

lieberman (sort of) in glastonbury (4.00 / 2)
i was at an open democratic town committee meeting monday night in glastonbury, the first of a two-parter. they will have lamont wednesday, may 3, also an open meeting.
monday featured laura cahill, a glastonbury resident and long-time lieberman aide, set to make the case for him. (don't know where he was) about 50 people were there, probably 49 of them knew and like laura. nevertheless, she got absolutely clobbered by people asking about lieberman's support of the war, refusal to rule out running as an independent, sellout on alito and so forth--you know the drill.
i felt sorry for laura; since she was not the principal she could hardly adjust his positions--she could just stand there and repeat his talking points. it kind of reminded me of a scott mcclellan press conference.
but i had a couple of thoughts: 1) lieberman is pretty much a prisoner of his record too. after all, would we respect him in the morning if he suddenly announced he's seen the light, the troops should come home, iran should not be nuked, and he'd do public penance (on fox) for his other sins? of course not. we'd just take it as further evidence that he'll do or say anything at all to remain in the senate. 2) i don't think lieberman is really planning at this point on an independent run. i mean, you don't just get up some morning in july and decide "gee, i'd like to be on the ballot." if he were planning that, he'd be filing papers, lining up support and so on, and in a state as small as connecticut, quite a few people would know and be talking. i think he's just--again at this point--making noise to try to scare democrats into voting for him at the convention, and i think that noise should be disregarded. people should cast their votes for whoever they think is the best candidate, and after they're counted, we can decide what to do next. i'm really, really tired of all this calculation, that aces people out of doing what they know in their hearts is the right thing. (or maybe the left thing. joke.) 3) joe's got real trouble with women--I talked to serveral that were spitting angry; outraged about schiavo, his catholic hospital thing, and, of course, alito.
the most interesting thing, to me, was the absolute tone of disdain with which people talked about lieberman--the questions were polite, but the tone was really nasty. i don't think that impression is just wishful thinking--i think a lot more folks than he might suspect are really mad. i could tell laura was surprised.

Hate to disillusion you, but (0.00 / 0)
the Convention is very tightly controlled.  You just can't walk out on the floor with "wheelbarrow after wheelbarrow."

I was at the 1994 Convention, and was bodily ejected by the DSC goons for leading an anti-Lieberman demonstration.

It was one of the proudest moments of my life!

Where's your spirit? (0.00 / 0)
Way to like, totally kill the symbolism, man.

However, even if we were allowed to make some sort of gesture like this, we wouldn't even have the pages for it. Even if all the sheets were half full, and we got, say, 20,000 signings, that would only be 10,000 pages. That would fill up about a wheelbarrow and a half.

Social libertarian.
