Reid "Claims" To Have Talked To Lieberman

Harry Reid, Senate Majority Leader, claims that last night he talked with Lieberman about attacking Obama.

http://tpmelectioncentral.talk...

Inquiring minds want to know if there is anything at all that Joe Lieberman could say about the Democratic presidential nominee that would get Harry Reid to tap the Connecticut Senator on the shoulder and say, "Psst -- hey bud, you enjoy your senior committee slots at my pleasure, so watch it."

http://blogs.abcnews.com/polit...

"I've had conversations with Lieberman at some length. I'm not going to discuss the conversations here.  But I think the discussions he had with Obama yesterday and the discussions he had with me yesterday were fruitful. We'll let the future decide what it's going to be, but I'm not about to threaten anybody."

But Reid also pointed out the Senate math that creates the odd dynamic where one of the Democratic caucus's participants is planning on speaking at the Republican convention.

"Without Lieberman's vote, the budget would not have passed," Reid said. "Without Lieberman the budget would not have been written. So I think everybody should understand that Joe Lieberman has made a decision on issues relating to the war. And he's decided to back John McCain. But Joe Lieberman is an important vote for this caucus."

BS, Harry Reid! Get rid of him now as he is no longer useful to us for anything.

"Fruitful," huh? Anyone who thinks Reid will put any kind of pressure on Lieberman behind the scenes is just kidding himself. It isn't going to happen, and Lieberman will continue to attack Obama -- and soon enough will start portraying him as too weak to defend the country -- secure in the knowledge that the only thing that will happen to him is that he'll get more press attention for it.

And that is the only thing that Lieberman is looking for is Press Attention. It always has been and always will be - about Joe.

I'm willing to give him 6 months (0.00 / 0)
The facts dictate that Lieberman's nominal Democratic allegiance are keeping Democrats in charge in the Senate.  I know that the Republicans are blocking everything with filibusters, and that Lieberman is a low-life traitor.  But if we can just keep cool for half a year longer, wait until Obama is elected and, more importantly, two or three more Democratic senators get elected, then we can throw Lieberman out on his butt in the most unceremonious and humiliating manner.

But right now, discretion is the better part of valor.

And let's all cheer for Ned Lamont to inherit Chris Dodd's seat in 2010 when he retires (he's said he will, right?).

Right now, the more Lieberman acts like a despicable slime ball, the more Nutmeggers will get disgusted with him, and the greater will be the groundswell of support for dumping him in 2012.  Let him destroy himself.  He's certainly doing a fabulous job of it right now!

not sure this is completely accurate (0.00 / 0)
thomashooker, you said, "The facts dictate that Lieberman's nominal Democratic allegiance are keeping Democrats in charge in the Senate."

I thought that the organizing rules of this session are that whatever Joe does, the Dems still are in charge and no committee heads would change.

Or are you referring to his vote as did Harry Reid?  I would appreciate input from anyone more familiar with the scorecard --- do Reid's words pan out, or is his protesting too much?  I remember his wringing his hands over his inability to release a hold by Colburn (one of 90 or more he has placed that as I understand it, Reid has respected and not overridden) on some civil rights investigation funding -- but he didn't flinch for a second in overriding Chris Dodd's hold on the telecom immunity issue.

So - highway game of chicken, Senate style.  who will swerve first?

Do we have a functioning FEC yet?  Is there someone who could actually investigate Joe's petty cash situation now?

You're right (0.00 / 0)
Sorry.  I wrote a bit too hastily.  I do understand that the Democrats still would control the committee chairmanships were LIEberman to flip.  Thanks for the correction.  Of course, should Senator Byrd pass on and were Lieberman to flip, it crashes down.

I, too, am disgusted at Reid's inability to stand up against the Republicans' tactics.  The Repubs didn't bat an eye about invoking the threat of the "nuclear option", screaming for "up or down votes".  But Reid sits passively by while the Republicans launch an outrageous number of filibusters.

For the next session, Democrats are going to have to call the Republicans' bluff, and eliminate the filibuster.  They asked for it.  And if LIEberman objects, we should remind him that his "gang of fourteen" said that filibusters would only be used in "extraordinary circumstances".

But thanks for the correction on the majority control part.

The sequence is interesting (0.00 / 0)
First he is dressed down by Obama,

Then a word from daddy Harry,

But I think the discussions he had with Obama yesterday and the discussions he had with me yesterday were fruitful.

Being dressed down by Obama was fruitful?

And all Harry says about Zippy the Liber Man is he is an important vote. Not an important member of the caucus, just an important vote...

Fruitful.

Let's see if Liber Man comes out of the corner with his Fruit of the Loom all twisted into a bunch or if he slinks out, trying not to be noticed.

BUT (0.00 / 0)
But LIE-berman is still in charge. Reid is still Lie-bermans PUPPET. I know that I am not from CT but I just could not pass this up.

Joe - I'll Do It My Way (0.00 / 0)
The Washington Post quotes Lieberman as saying yesterday -

"I'm going to do everything I can to help him get elected. I'm going to do it my way." Lieberman said of McCain in an interview Thursday. "But there will be times when I'll comment, in fairness, on Sen. Obama's positions."

Yeah, right, Joe. Like you commented on Obama Wednesday! Keep your comments to yourself, buddy.
