Senate Majority Leader Reid - "Lieberman Will Retain Seniority"

by: Missy's Brother

Thu Apr 03, 2008 at 16:39:56 PM EDT

An article in today's Hartford Courant worth reading. Unbelievable!

http://www.courant.com/news/po...

Lieberman's constant presence at McCain's side fuels speculation that he would join a McCain administration. Yet he already has talked with Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid about his future in the caucus.

Would Lieberman, 66, a four-term Connecticut senator, be stripped of his committee chairmanship and seniority if Democrats no longer had to rely on a self-described "Independent Democrat" for their one-vote majority?

"I can tell you Sen. Reid had talked to me a few times and said he knows there will be talk if we get more than 51 Democrats next year," Lieberman said. "As far as he is concerned, I will retain my seniority, etc., no matter how many Democrats there are next year."

Reid's spokesman, Jim Manley, confirmed Lieberman's account.

Chris Dodd for Senate Majority Leader '09!

I Second That Motion! (4.00 / 2)
Joe Lieberman no longer has any business remaining on the Democratic side of the ledger; he has made his choices and now ought to suffer the consequences.  If Reid made such a commitment, he needs to be replaced.  The Democratic party needs leadership with backbone; Dodd would be a terrific choice!

It's past the point of "Why?" (4.00 / 2)
joey didn't pay a political price for running against the Democratic candidate in '06 and it looks like he isn't going to pay a political price for campaigning for and perhaps running with the Republican 2008 Presidential candidate - and perhaps subverting the campaign of the 2008 Democratic Presidential and congressional campaigns as best he can.

Was it the $100,000 contribution to the DSCC?

Is that all it costs to be a member of the caucus and retain seniority?

Maybe we should look into putting together a Grass Roots Fund that makes contributions to the DSCC and DCCC. Buy a little seniority and respect perhaps?

Even an I.O.U. would do.

How About "Matching Funds?" (4.00 / 1)
Acquire an equal amount in small contributions -- deliverable only in exchange for Lieberman's ousting . . .

It's past the point of debate (4.00 / 2)
I can understand Reid's being a bit coy, and even a bit disengenuous with Lieberman, since he needs him to remain a bit with Dems on some votes.  But as soon as Dems get to 53 or 54 seats in the Senate without Lieberman, he should be dropped like a live hand grenade.  There is no excuse for Democrats' being so pusilanimous as to actually reward Joe Lieberman's perfidy and blatantly contemptuous actions with committee chairmanships if he's not needed in future.  And Reid needs to get rid of the 60-vote requirement to invoke cloture.  The Republicans have blocked every bit of meaningful legislation with their use of the filibuster, an instrument that they threatened to eliminate when they were in power and Democrats were denying them "straight up or down votes" on theire far-fight judicial appointments.  As the Republicans pointed out then, there is no requirement for a super majority to pass legislation in the Senate, and they weren't going to put up with Democratic filibusters.  Now Reid should do as they desired, and as the New York Times' editorial page recommended, and eliminate the filibuster next January.

Unbelievable (4.00 / 2)
He's campaigning for the Republican and smearing the Democrats at every possible turn.
Reid has got to go.

MB: Have you cross-posted this at MyDD and the Great Orange Satan? this needs as broad attention among Dems ($$) as we can bring to it.

I have not (4.00 / 1)
but please feel free to use it. I agree that all Democrats should be made aware of this. The fact that Reid's spokesman confirmed it, makes me sick.
