In classic Shays strategy he links to Democrat in today's Post headline

Today's Connecticut Post lead headline story links Shays and Finch in (sic) an effort to rejuvenate the Arts in Bridgeport.

Shays strategy of linking himself to a current Democratic office holder is his not so subtle way to reinforce his very dubious assertion that he is a moderate Republican.

Today's feature story (which I was unable to find online) is doubly ironical because neither Shays nor Finch have shown any support for Bridgeport's extremely anemic and nearly invisible arts community any time in memory.

( Here's the link. Jon K.)

The story announces an arts forum this coming Friday (28) at Housatonic Community college which is being run by Rell loyalist (and art gallery director) Robin Zella.  The forum is meant to anoint a sham arts inventory report authored by a MA consultant whose only interest was in collecting the $12,000 fee and give the appearance that he was advancing the arts in Bridgeport.

Patriotact :: In classic Shays strategy he links to Democrat in today's Post headline
Yours truly attended no fewer than ten nascent Bridgeport arts council meetings in 2006 and 2007 informally sponsored by Mayor Fabrizi's office.

These meetings were surprisingly democratic and open to broad ranging topics but came to an abrupt halt when the volunteer ad guy who was running them left; whereupon Robin Zella took over and declared that Shays was sponsoring a carefully controlled and largely closed arts inventory.  The result is a boiler plate document which does little or nothing to advance the nearly comatose arts community in Bridgeport.

Shays wants it that way and does all he can to keep Bridgeport under foot, the third class city it usually thinks of itself as. At least that's the way Bridgeport leaders think of what was once industrial capital of Connecticut.  Shays picked this up long ago and has got it down to a science.
His brilliant sham liberal connection extends to the now disreputable Sierra Club and at least one Human Rights group even as he votes to promote Bush's pro torture agenda and extend the $3 Trillion permanent war in Iraq and beyond.

I'm surprised Shays has the time for this (4.00 / 1)
Shouldn't he be packing for his 21st trip to Iraq?  I'll bet when he retires he'll have enough frequent-flier miles to take a vacation on Mars.

Wake up and smell the Taxes! (0.00 / 0)
State Senator Robert Russo's main hobby horse during his campaign (some of which can be found at http://video.google.com/videop...
was Rell's plan for a state-wide cap on property taxes.

Trumbull recently announced a 11% increase in property taxes.

Mulligan opposed Rell's plan and had none of his own taking a do nothing approach to one of the most festering problems affecting all of the 22nd district's residents.

Property taxes in a collapsing economy probably was the decisive issue in the election aside from name recognition.
(Recall Russo had previously been a top Shays staff member)

Here's my theory.
In last week's Bridgeport News Finch announced he would be selling Pleasure Beach to the Feds so he would not have raise property taxes.  This issue is not going away anytime soon.
Shays said OK we'll buy PB but only if you help me get re-elected.

Otherwise no deal and to boot we'll nail you on this issue in the next election.

No one in Bridgeport takes the arts seriously and certainly no one believes they will be this downtrodden's city's economic salvation.  So neither Shays nor Finch were going to create any enemies from this anemic constituency no matter they did.

Two valuable and remarkably candid videos to look at on this subject are

"Save the Black Rock Art Center," public testimony before Bridgeport, CT City Council, September 5, 2006.
