Hillary's Last Stand

by: Scarce

Sat Jan 05, 2008 at 13:50:14 PM EST

If last night's New Hampshire Democratic Party 100 Club Dinner in Milford, NH is any indication we may be seeing the sudden and dramatic end to Hillary Clinton's presidential ambitions. Hillary was booed a few times, mainly by inciting the vocal and derisive Obama supporters, but worse for her Obama absolutely slayed the audience with another memorable speech to end the evening for a raucous crowd of 3500. This morning another 2500 packed an event in Nashua for Obama.

This was an interesting point brought up by Katherine Hall Jaimeson on Bill Moyers Journal last night, and also noted by some of the cable news pundits. Check out the different approaches that the Obama and Clinton campaigns took to stage their backdrops:

Aside from the ubiquitous "Change" text in both photos, look at all of the familiar faces in on stage with Hil (and one particularly prominent one). It's like an episode of "I Love the '90's". A few younger faces, but not a lot. Then look at the people in Obama's backdrop, a mostly young crowd with their cellphones and digital cameras out. To paraphrase Kos - which one looks like a movement?

IMHO (4.00 / 2)
Even if Hillary loses to Obama in NH next Tuesday, I don't think her campaign for presidency is over. She still has a lot of supporters and a ton of money behind her. I don't see that folding after 2 losses in 2 small states. She is also a very smart politician.

I'm not here to defend HRC. But, I certainly wouldn't count her out after New Hampshire, regardless of the results.

That's not how it works though (0.00 / 0)
If she loses New Hampshire, and loses badly again, she will lose South Carolina too. Then she goes into Super Tuesday with no real wins, all the press for her opponent, and failing poll numbers. The bandwagon effect will be too strong if that happens.

Maybe the Clintons can pull this out of their hats but right now the only thing looking inevitable these days is her defeat.

Need help finding video! (0.00 / 0)
Or a transcript!

Go back to the entire show and look at who comes on as the Obama representative right after this exchange...

Then he asks Elizabeth to differentiate between John and Barack Obama, and when she tries to play up John's populist appeal, Tweety's response is to denigrate trial lawyers as an undesirable interest group to be supporting Edwards' campaign, even going so far as to blame trial lawyers for the lack of bartenders in Pennsylvania.  Huh?  Is he forgetting that Elizabeth Edwards was a trial lawyer herself?  Watch how Elizabeth constantly tries to get Matthews to focus on John Edwards' campaign and Tweety's little mind flits elsewhere.

If you didn't notice, the next guest after this exchange was a trial lawyer supporting Obama. Yet... Not a word about that fact from Tweety.

Why not?

Why is it a horror story if a trial lawyer supports Edwards, but not even notable if if the next guest introduced is a trial lawyer supporting Obama?

Note: I can't find the video of it OR the transcripts... But I am certain it is the case as I noticed it as soon as he introduced the Obama supporter right after the Elizabeth Edwards shtick... If you have the video of it somewhere, or the transcripts, please send it my way or post it here!

I figure those among you that videoblog may have the video including the guest that followed shortly after Elizabeth Edwards and supporting Barrack Obama... Any help appreciated! And NO, I am not knocking Obama for this, just the media hypocrisy.

Just not a story for the media circus clowns (4.00 / 1)
Calling Obama's team, for the trial lawyer support, doesnt fit the script...the media wants this to be the impossible dream, the grand battle...  There is nothing they want more than an Obama vs. McCain/guliani or Mr. Whitebread himself, Mittster.

Even if John is more qualified and truly about change, it sure looks like the Ringling Bros. media circus won't check that out...or let it happen....it don't sell like the epic battle they are putting down on us.

New NH Rasmussen poll (0.00 / 0)
does not look good for Hillary.

The latest Rasmussen Reports telephone survey of the race found Obama with 37% of the vote while Clinton earns 27%. John Edwards is the only other candidate in double digits, with 19% support. Bill Richardson is the choice for 8%.

In a pre-Christmas poll, Clinton led Obama by three. In the poll before that, Obama led Clinton by three.

Looks like Obama's got the 'mo. And interestingly, given our discussions about his success in Iowa, that's particularly true amongst independents:

In New Hampshire, Obama leads Clinton by five points among Democrats and by sixteen points among Independents. The survey indicates that 40% of the voters will be Independents.

Does anyone have data about the youth skew of independents? Like are more people in the 18-30 group independents than amongst old farts like yours truly (who wouldn't DARE not register for a party because her (Romney-supporting) dad always drummed it into her head that it was important to be able to vote in the party primary)

more polls (4.00 / 1)
American Research Group:

The new American Research Group poll gives Obama a 12-point lead over Hillary Clinton in New Hampshire, 38% to 26%, a 16% swing since the previous poll. John Edwards moved up on Clinton, at 20%, gaining 5% from his previous percentage.

Most interesting detail deep in the ARG numbers: Hillary actually leads Obama 34% to 32% among confirmed Democrats, while he tops her 49% to 12% among independents, which may make up one-third of the tally.

John Edwards, 23 percent

Watching debate on ABC (0.00 / 0)
God, what a useless hack Charlie Gibson is. The first 20 minutes of the debate were spent on the THREAT of NUCLEAR TERRORISM! Boo! Four Democrats try to out-Giuliani each other. Actually the one good answer would have been something like
"As president, I would appoint a head of CIA who would be committed to re-establishing a strong, vital and able intelligence program and to do the hard work of field intelligence instead of the useless and illegal technology-driven, data mining and spying programs that the Bush administration has instituted. This, along with a military engaged in Iraq, is why they haven't caught Bin Laden. If we are serious about preventing a political implosion in Pakistan, we need to re-build our intelligence capability so we will have access to the information we need in such a crisis."
But nobody alluded to that.

Now they're on to healthcare, sounds like Hil is attacking Barack... gonna rewind the TIVO in a second.

De-bathification? (4.00 / 1)
Why was Obama saying that he wanted de-bathification to go forward with the Iraqi government? Wasn't that part of the Rumsfeld doctrine that led to the insurgency?

Debate impressions... (0.00 / 0)

First I was sincerly impressed with the broad knowledge and skills of all four Democrats. To me Obama and Edwards are in their own league,( compared to all the other debaters, Dem. or Rep.),in terms of eloquence.

Clinton did what she needed to do, in terms of the experience vs change theme; but I felt that Obama was able to neutralize her points every time.

Clinton, Obama and Edwards all talked a great deal about change. However there is a major difference in their visions about change. Clinton is about incremental change. Working on the margins;leaving the system relatively intact. What she doesn't seem to grasp is that the change Obama and Edwards are refering to is a paradigm shift...a historic shift, that reverses the polarity from top-down, to bottom up.

As you all know I was a supporter of Dennis Kucinich, who switched to Edwards, as the process moved on, to try to stop Clinton and Obama. As a Progressive, I am now ready to trust Barack Obama. I'm sure I wasn't the only one to envision during the debate, an Obama-Edwards ticket.

But let justice roll down like waters...Amos 5:24a

This was the first Democratic primary debate I've watched this season. (0.00 / 0)
I'm actually impressed with all 3 of the Democratic contenders--Edwards, Clinton and Obama. Richardson wasn't as impressive.

Edwards was on point with his message throughout the debate. He is the true champion of the middle class among the three. Obama continued to be the "best orator" when it came to inspiring people. But, Hillary held her own and showed why she is a credible contender with the other boys.

FWIW, I think any of the above 3 I was impressed with would kick butt in the general. So electability should not be that much of an issue among you Democrats.
