Does this mean that Joe really wants to see the Dems win, but he wants bush to think he's supporting the GOP, so he endorses the guy for whom the trend is not his friend... so that means if people vote for McCain they will be voting for a loser and the Dems will win?

I don't think it'll occur to the Mark Davis's of CT media that this quote might be a tad bit relevant. They'll cover the bipartisan angle (forgetting Joe's Independent Democrat mantle he bestowed upon himself), cue a clip of DiNardo saying she's still friends with Joe, then toss it to weather and traffic.

Here's the question I recommend: "Last year Joe Lieberman promised to support a Dem presidential candidate in 2008.  Do you feel he was being a baldfaced liar by endorsing John McCain?"

Lieberman can't possibly be a superdelegate in the Democratic nomination process anymore. With no recognition by the national party, a failure to back Democrat Chris Dodd for President, and a failure to respect the will of Democratic voters in a primary election in '06 --- what more will it take for the CT SoS to act on any of the petitions to challenge Lieberman's party registration.

Are laws just helpful hints like "baking soda gets out jelly stains" or are THE LAW? It's time Joker Lieberman had got tossed officially from the Democratic Party.

WOW, I never knew that (about baking soda).  And what a wonderful question to bring out regarding so many topics - like a cardigan sweater, it is SO appropriate on so many occasions.

Yes, in a season when fashion sales are down, this question is a definite progressive fashion accessory.

I was forgetting the superdelegate angle awhile back as I wondered which 2 years he could be taken off the books for  --hmm, do we like 08-09 better than 2012-13?  

Does one become a superdelegate through an open process, or through the private actions of a few party officials?

I'd love a quote from Nancy DiNardo about now -- if I can't have one today, I'd settle for some of her past pronouncements.

And PS:  joejoejoe, have you considered submitting this question to the C&L items for Chris Dodd to read on the floor?

I think it highlights the absurdity of defending the rule of men over the rule of law.  rah rah for illegal wiretapping and retroactive immunity for violating American citizens' constitutional rights "because we need the telecoms' fiber optic cables to do more wiretapping"?  I digress, but the delightful question made me do it.

...about Lieberman's status as a superdelegate. I'll give a few days and then contact them again. I'm outside CT so I'll leave the CT party registration to more capable and local hands. That said, if Lieberman gets to keep his status as a Democratic superdelegate I'm seriously going to consider leaving the party.

It's been a very long time since even the most bald-faced lies have been challenged in the mainstream press. We have been treated, ad nauseum, to he-said-she-said style of reporting -- recently appropriately labeled "stenography."  So Joe's lies simply have become ho-hum.  

I think Joe's endorsement of McCain really is about a deal:  McCain apparently refused an offer to run as Kerry's Vice Presidential nominee, but this may have given McCain [Opportunist #2] an idea; and Joe would not refuse to accept the second spot on a McCain ticket.

As a postscript: Does anyone think that Harry Reid will boot Joe out of the Democratic Senatorial club when he announces for McCain?  I wouldn't hold my breath.

I would hope that she would
- remove Lieberman's name from the list of "Democratic Members of Congress"
- NOT invite him to the JJB dinner,
- stop calling him "just like Chris Dodd" and a "friend" of Democrats
- start publicly recruiting Democrats to run for his seat in 2012

The CT Democratic Party should be actively, and vocally -- OUT LOUD -- recruiting candidates to run against Lieberman when his term expires. This should be a constant dialog coming out of State Central.

In August 2006, CT Democrats decided they no longer want Lieberman to represent the party. DiNardo needs to honor the wishes of the majority of CT's Democrats.

Definition of a superdelegate gets to the heart of it (0.00 / 0)

A superdelegate is an ex officio delegate -- all Dem elected officials are Dem superdelegates.  Joe was elected, but not as a Dem candidate.

Because Joe's been permitted to keep using the letter D in his name, he's hoping that will get him in as a superdelegate?  Imagine that Hillary is counting on it, too, so he can swing his vote toward her nomination regardless of how CT's other delegate votes go.

I would argue that a superdelegate is not someone who happens to be a member of the Dem party who was elected under another party's (CFL) banner after being rejected as the Dem party's nominee.

So the question that is unclear to me is in a case like this, if  Lieberman pushed being a superdelegate, who would rule on his eligibility - state central, national DNC, etc?

The only instrument that demonstrates Democratic voters' intent is the primary vote and selection of a party standardbearer.  Anyone can sign up and say they are a Dem or GOP member - people do it all the time if they want to vote in the other party's primary.

What would prevent Chris Shays from changing his party membership and showing up at a Dem convention as a superdelegate?

There has to be some measure of intent here, doesn't there?  What is the procedure, anyone know?

Dems speak out about Joe:

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid of Nevada said in a statement: "I have the greatest respect for Joe, but I simply have to disagree with his decision to endorse Senator McCain."

Al From, the founder and CEO of the centrist Democratic Leadership Council, said, "I am very saddened by Senator Lieberman's choice and profoundly disagree with it. We need to elect a Democratic president in 2008."

So two of the country's leading Dems make it crystal clear that they have chosen not to endorse a Republican themselves.  Can't get any more critical than that!
