Watching Sicko

by: Aldon Hynes

Thu Nov 15, 2007 at 11:28:16 AM EST

For months, Kim and I have talked about watching Michael Moore's documentary 'Sicko', but never gotten around to it.  When it first came out, we invited various State Reps near where we lived to come see it with us.  They all declined.  Perhaps they were embarrassed about having failed to pass meaningful healthcare reform last session.  They should be.

What got us to do it this time, was Democracy for America holding Sicko Houseparties.  We didn't try as hard to invite State Reps to attend this time.  We had too many other things going on.  We did managed to contact one State Rep, who did not attend.

Yet we ended up crowding between 15 and 20 people in our living room to watch Sicko, to discuss healthcare reform, and to join in a conference call with Michael Moore.  The group ended up being a lot of the same old activists that we met when Dr. Dean was trying to get Americans to focus on healthcare reform during the 2004 Presidential campaign.

One new face to me was Paul Wessel.  He is a campaign organizer for www.healthcare4every1.org.  He spoke about efforts here in Connecticut and former Speaker of the CT House Irv Stolberg offered insights into the legislative process.

If you haven't watched Sicko yet, please do.  If you haven't signed up on healthcare4everyone1.org, please do.  Most importantly, find time to talk with friends, family and neighbors about the importance of meaningful healthcare reform.

Wish I could have been there, even though I am one of the same olds...

There was a feet-to-the-fire effort by Connecticut Working Families last year where a "seen SICKO/haven't seen SICKO" site was dangled in front of the noses of Reps and State Senators statewide. Their lack of interest was appalling. All of the legislators I contacted are still on the list.

Perhaps they saw the movie but forgot to email the site to say they can be removed from the list....

State legislators who are committed to health care reform should be inviting constituents to watch the show with THEM.

Part of the battle for health care reform is a political battle -- convincing people that it makes sense and then garnering their support at the voting booths.

Bringing people together to talk about health care -- by watching movies like Sicko or in some other kind of forum -- builds popular support for reforms and makes it easier to pass effective legislation.

The state legislators should be leading the effort -- not waiting for invitations from constituents.

... Aldon, it was great of you to take the lead on this issue and to raise awareness. Even if state reps didn't attend, talking to friends about the issue is equally important.

Thanks to you and Kim (0.00 / 0)
for the use of the hall. A very enjoyable (if occasionally rage-producing) evening.

I'll have to make sure to Netflix it (0.00 / 0)
As a self-employed writer, with two kids with medical issues (let alone all of my own-Damn, getting older SUCKS!) I've got health care horror stories up the wazoo.

get that Wazoo of yours checked out. Anyone know of a good Wazooligist?

My wife and I just watched it.... (0.00 / 0)
and we were shocked, horrified, angered, and the list could go on and on.  My favorite line in the movie came from Tony Bean, the Labour MP, who said that "a society that can spend money to kill people can spend it on helping people."  As he said that, all I could think about is the crushing costs of our prescriptions and the endless spending bills that give Bush more money to kill people.

Plenty of money for bombs, but none for babies; that's the American way!  I still wonder how anybody could vote Republican or Blue Dog after seeing this movie.  Say what you want about Moore, but facts are facts.
