Monday Roundup and Open Thread

by: CaptCT

Mon Oct 29, 2007 at 09:58:30 AM EDT

Chris Dodd appeared on Meet the Press yesterday, and Tim Russert put Dodd through the ringer.  Video and transcripts are now available on the MSNBC website.

Connecticut College is signing up new voters at a faster clip than usual, with some college students surprisingly expressing an interest in local elections. It's a small sampling of voters, but good to see improvement.

Joe Courtney made an appearance in Colchester yesterday, and got his picture in the paper. Unsurprisingly, people he spoke to said they were concerned about the war.

Any thoughts on the Dodd interview, voter registration, Courtney? What else is going on?

Update (tparty): As Spazeboy notes in the comments, Ned Lamont will be liveblogging at MLN about some great candidates in the upcoming municipal elections tomorrow, Tuesday Oct. 30th, at 1pm ET. Stop by tomorrow at lunchtime! (More on his endorsed candidates at NedLamont.com.)

SEN. DODD:  Well, it's-those are the allegations out there.  And again, point out to you, not all companies followed that request.  They said, "Look, give us a court order." That's a basic requirement in these kind of things.

MR. RUSSERT:  There've been suggestions that you exploited this issue politically for your presidential run, and, and they point to this.  Here's your Web site.  "Restore the Constitution.  We did it!  You helped us meet our $100,000 goal in 36 hours.  Let's keep it going." You used it as a fund-raising tool.

SEN. DODD:  Well, no, we get people, people stepped up to the plate through the Internet and contributed and were helpful in the campaign.

MR. RUSSERT:  But tied specifically to your criticism of that legislation.

SEN. DODD:  Well, the, the point is here, look, Tim, this is a serious issue here that requires a serious response, and I believe, going back, the military commission's active a year ago.  I think the only person speaking out as strongly as I have against these actions here, this consistent erosion here that worry me very, very much about what's happening to our Constitution.  But I've been asked the question, what's the first thing I would do on January 20th, 2009, the consistent answer I've given is restore the Constitution.  I'm very worried about where we're headed with all of this.

Or this leading questioning:

MR. RUSSERT:  But you voted for the war, you voted for funding for the war. You were against timetables for withdrawal of troops.  Then you became a presidential candidate, and suddenly it was about oil and you were against the funding and you were for timetables.

SEN. DODD:  No, Tim, that's...

MR. RUSSERT:  Is that political expediency?

SEN. DODD:  No, no, no, let's go back, as I've said earlier to you, in September of '04, I said I wish we had the vote back, it was a mistake, it was wrong.

MR. RUSSERT:  But you kept voting for the funding.

SEN. DODD:  Well, did vote for funding along the way because the argument was we were trying to get this-get a decent conclusion to this here.  And then a year ago when I was there and came back, drew the conclusion, as many others have along the way here, that this is just not working here.  And my view was, at that point and is today, that Congress has one responsibility.  If the policy has failed and it's not working, that we ought to terminate the funding for it here.  Clearly the administration doesn't want to do that, not likely to do it, so it's up to the Congress to achieve that result.

MR. RUSSERT:  And no
political expediency?

Jeez Timmy, what are you implying here?

Russert: "There've been suggestions that you exploited this issue."

Suggestions by whom, Tim?

It seems that when presenting opposing arguments to Republicans, the line is:
"Liberal/left-wing blogs criticize you for ..."

But when Democrats are under fire by MSM, it's more like this: "some people say ...," or "it's been suggested..." etc., and not this: "right wing bloggers/your political opponents say .."

I wonder why that is. Must be the liberal media at work again.

Russert being a jerk:
-- Dodd's stance on the FISA hold ... Russert should have been congratulating Dodd on that, not raking him over the coals for promoting it.
-- Standings in the polls ... somewhat irrelevant, and Russert just rubs it in.
-- changing stance on Iraq ... Dodd should have just said: Once it became clear that the Iraq war was a disaster, should I have continued to bury my head in the sand like Republicans have? You can criticize Dodd for poor judgement in the past, but not for changing his position.
-- soldiers dying in vain?
Please, Tim. Who gives you these questions? The answer is this: The soldiers went into Iraq to eliminate what we thought was an imminent threat. That mission was successful, and now it's over. Yet the troops are still there and more soldiers are dying -- the goal being to stabilize Iraq. But the only way to create stability there is by bringing the troops home and using effective diplomacy. I don't want any more of these soldiers killed, do you?

Russert makes a legitimate point: regarding taxes on hedge fund managers and Dodd's campaign contributions. However, every candidate gets their money from someplace. I hope Russert goes over campaign contributions from all the candidates during his interviews with them.
