Greenwich Time (Fairfield County's Fox News) Pulls Another Fast One

by: thomashooker

Fri Oct 26, 2007 at 13:37:22 PM EDT

In oh-so-typical right-wing/Fox News fashion, Greenwich Time pulled another slick move yesterday.  They changed the text of AP reporter Andrew Miga's text of his article entitled on Dodd in Iowa.  How did they change it?  Here it is:

First, in the second paragraph they identified Lieberman as "D-Conn," even though the original text of the article had Lieberman as "I-Conn."  The Stamford Advocate carried the original "I-Conn" description.  AP's Southern New England Bureau Chief David Marcus confirmed that AP no longer desribes Lieberman as a Democrat, but always as an independent. Then farther down, GT changed the sentence that read: "Lieberman became an independent senator after losing the 2006 Democratic Senate primary..." to "Lieberman became an independent Democrat senator after losing..."

So the editors over at Greenwich Time twisted the words of the AP story to fit their ideological slant.  And of course they also managed to insult Democrats by using the noun form of the party's name as an adjective ("Democrat party"), the same way all of the far-right Republicans do these days.  But apparently they figured they could only get away with that little trick in heavily Republican Greenwich.  They didn't fool around with the Stamford Advocate version of the story.  Too many Democrats there, perhaps?

Well, the paper has been sold, the publisher has been sacked, and perhaps the new owner will do something about Bruce Hunter, the paper's editor who's been smearing Democrats in town for so many years.  Perhaps they will also call reporter Neil Vigdor to account for all of the really slimy articles he's written that denigrate Democrats.  Perhaps they can start with the one he wrote last year dismissing Frank Farricker and Ed Krumeich, who were running respectively for state senate and state representative, with the opening line: "Lattes and longshots?"  Or perhaps Hunter can explain to new management how he could publish the headline at the end of that week: "Democrats Cough Up 11th Hour Candidates," equating Democratic candidates with hair balls.

Frank Farricker is now running a spirited, issues-oriented campaign, and has knocked on literally thousands of doors around town.  Predictably, Greenwich Time today endorsed both of the Republicans.

But perhaps for Greenwich, we'll see big changes ahead that will result in even-handed treatment for Democrats in that town.  We sure can hope.

Like I've said before ... (0.00 / 0)
... you would think that people who go into journalism do it, not because of the pay, which sucks, but because they seek the truth.

So when these clowns at the Greenwich Time act like morons it makes you wonder what kind of worms are eating at their souls.

I'm reserving judgement (0.00 / 0)
because I've read plenty of complaints on these here boards about the folks that bought the GT.

And I don't know yet if I'm out of a columnist gig, either.

Is there someone we can write to in your support? (0.00 / 0)
You're about the only decent thing in that newspaper.  How do we start a write-in campaign to make sure your new handlers know it?

Really.

Not sure but... (0.00 / 0)
I guess write to the new publisher, John Dunster. But I'd wait for the dust to settle a little.

Figures, now that I finally got into the Advocate!!

email? mailing address? (0.00 / 0)
And who is Dunster?  How closely involved with the Danbury paper was he?  And what will Monsma do now?

Not sure to the 3rd power (0.00 / 0)
but I'll let you know as soon as I know anything.

If you meet him, give us a heads up! (0.00 / 0)
You might like to mention to him the chronic unhappiness of Democrats in town toward Greenwich Time, and ask him if that's something he will look into, or cares about.  Perhaps ask him if he's aware of how the internet views GT, and see if he gives a damn or not.

Given the not insignificant criticism of the Danbury paper, especially of its online edition with its supposedly racist-laced commentary, how did he view criticism of that paper?

You might also mention that a boycott of the paper has been discussed in Democratic circles before, and see whether he gives a damn.

FCC plans Dec. anti-consolidation rule gut vote - Zell, Tribune Co would benefit (0.00 / 0)
The AP, Chicago Trib and LA Times and NY Times reported last week that FCC Chief Kevin Martin plans a stealth December vote to gut 1974-instituted anti-media consolidation rules and continue erasing diverse media ownership (a trend started in the Reagan years).

Not only has the Tribune Company sewn up much of populous Fairfield County's newspaper coverage (Greenwich through Fairfield plus Danbury and New Canaan), it has "temporary waivers" allowing it to consolidate in the following cities:
HARTFORD
New York
Chicago
Los Angeles
Miami-Fort Lauderdale area

The "temporary" nature of this consolidation  may  mean editorial changes could continue to unfold after any waiver becomes a permanently approved ownership.

It's convenient:  Sam Zell could complete his buyout of the LA Times by year's end (his accountants would love it) and the selling Tribune Company could  have any threats to its remaining  "temporary" empire resolved.  AND 2008 is just around the corner!

Martin's predecessor tried this maneuver and was rebuffed by the court system, which said there was no reason for the rule changes.  Martin has held "hearings" in a number of cities and created some "studies" that he says will "support" this rule change.

What about those "studies"?  Fair and balanced, as they say? The LA Times was fortunately permitted to report that

Gene Kimmelman, a vice president at Consumers Union, publisher of Consumer Reports magazine, called the studies "so flawed and so biased, they have no basis for relaxing media ownership rules."

The New York Times story and Chicago Trib-LA Times-AP story are my sources.  An interesting timeline from hearusnow.org showing both the work in the 40's through 70's to promulgate diverse media ownership, and the trend from Reagan onward to dismantle diverse ownership, offers concise historical perspective.

Dem FCC Commissioner Michael Copps has tirelessly opposed these changes and will be participating in a live chat at Free Press Action Network (freepress.net) on Monday 10/29 at 7PM - see details here.
